Gear shifting: This is a controversial subject with much rumour and myth surrounding it; even more so than body steering vs counter steering.

I don't claim to have anywhere near the last word on the matter, but here's what I know:

There should be no extra wear on your gearbox if you shift clutchlessly provided you do it right.

How to do it right:

  • Shift only when coasting. Coasting is when your are neither accelerating nor decclerating.
  • Roll off the throttle. Don't chop (suddenly release) the throttle - keep it smooth.
  • There is a sweet spot just as your acceleration goes to zero but before engine braking starts, where you can shift up or down.
  • You'll know when you've got it right when there's no resistance to the lever moving. Never, ever force the lever.
  • Upshifts are easier than downshifts, and upshifts in higher gears and speeds are easier than upshifts in lowers gears and speeds. So start by experimenting with upshifts from 5th to 6th.

But if you do it wrong, good luck to your transmission. Using the clutch gives you a lot of leeway with regards to precision. Without the clutch your gearbox won't give you chance - must be perfect or else problem.

Why won't correctly executed clutchless shifting hurt your gearbox?

Because neither your engine nor gearbox can tell whether or not you're using the clutch. All it "knows" is whether or not you've shifted well. It's easier to shift well with the clutch, but you'll be adding clutch wear and consequent metal filings in your oil. In my opinion, people who say that metal filings added to your oil from slightly imprecise clutchless shifts (since we're not perfect 100% of the time) are not factoring in the reduction in metal filings from not using the clutch. Which adds more crap to your oil? Tough call there. My guess is we probably break even.

Common sense should also play a part here: I've known the principle of clutchless shifting on cars and bikes for years, but never experimented till recently because I never had a vehicle with a suitably healthy gearbox. For instance, a 10-year-old VW Golf GTI car with 170000km mileage that I used to drive would grind between 1st and 2nd even with the clutch and lots of care. So, if your gearbox doesn't feel in top-notch condition, especially if you've got problems with grinding/noises/lurching, use the clutch!

Ok, I think I've been long-winded enough so I'd better stop before I fill up a few pages. I should consolidate some of this info on my website sometime...

And one last thing, I love sharing knowledge, but don't hold me responsible for anything that happens to your bike.

Ride safe & happy shifting. Clutchless shifts can be smoother and more efficient than the most expert clutch use.

car and bike gears different la

ur gear will break b4 u can even engage

but as for wear n tear, i agree that if u do it correctly there is not much extra wear, coz at the point where the bike is neither accelerating nor decelerating, theres not much force acting on the gears

for sale :

rotax 122 clutch basket - very low wear, see to believe!

25 piece cdr - brand new $8

17" monitor - flickers when cold $10

There are cars (Caterham 7, etc) with good, small engines and gearboxes that you can shift clutchlessly without much worry, but in Singapore they would be very expensive, even though the cc not that high.

Also i keep finding false neutrals when upshifting and when i downshift i can sometimes feel like the gears are grinding...is this normal?

Hanif, any grinding whatsoever in your gearbox is not normal. Just imagine what is happening mechanically.

Can you describe how you shift? You should be kicking the lever firmly and quickly, all the way till it stops moving, though you shouldn't use excessive force. It sounds to me like you might not be kicking firmly enough and following through the motion.

Good gear oil makes a big difference, but it won't make up for wrong technique.

By the way, do you know when your gear oil was last changed, and what kind it is?

guys, does clutchless gear shifting really damage the gearbox? cos thats wad i have heard from many ppl riding various different bikes...

ok ok.. i think clutchless shift will make ya clutch wear out lesser..

this is what i think how it works..

our clutch lining wears out when our clutch are at the biting point...

when the clutchs are fully engaged.. the wear stops there...

as we know.. when we do a downshift or upshift, we'll release our clutch lever

slowly.. sometimes holding at the biting point for a sec or 2 to ensure a smooth shifting..

so in the case of a clutchless shift.. the clutch simply change from a gear to

another gear instantly.. elminating the wearing part.. thus lesser wear..

but but... the sudden engagin would likely to cause an impact on the gear..

and might even spoilt the gear...

usually i only does it from 3rd or 4th gear onwards.. and usually at 6 - 7k rpm..

that's where i can get a smooth clutchless upshift..

not advisable on gear 1 and 2.. cos the engine braking power is too strong, might

spoilt ya gearing..

fibre,

Yeah... I guess I've been lobbying too hard for Unil-Opal huh?

Sorry, I'm a really big skeptic of all things and seldom get overly excited over anything, except for those that happen to convince me otherwise.

Believe nothing you hear; and only half of what you see.

Do or do not; there is no 'try'.
