Spark plugs and ignition

Kevin Cameron points out in his book that a matchstick lights a stove as well as a blowtorch. He elaborates that well-balanced air-fuel mixtures require only a minimal spark to be ignited - if power goes up when you go with a hotter ignition system, you had a bad mixture to begin with.

I've been thinking though: Cameron's talking about perfect air-fuel mixtures. But most of us run a bit rich on our street machines, and I think rich mixtures are harder to ignite. Maybe that's why many riders report better performance with fancier spark plugs. Khairul (macan putih) uses only NGK and Denso iridium plugs, and says he gets more high-end power with them compared to standard plugs. I have no idea - I've only used standard plugs on my bikes. What does everyone think? Does the expensive stuff make a difference? Lawrence says no difference. But Darren at Regina claims Derrick (ROTHMANS) uses NGK Racing Plugs.

I've been reluctant to mess with my ignition for fear of straining my magnetic coil, or screwing up the sensitive electrical system in some other way. But I finally gave in and bought an NGK Racing Cable, which is the same as stock except for lower resistance and better insulation. I haven't installed it yet though cuz I want to monitor my latest carb jetting for a few more days.

I think there's been enough time for people to move their names from the "inactive" list to the "active" one, so I've taken the liberty of streamlining the ARC members list. I've moved up those from the "inactive" list that I think still ride Aprilias, or that still pop in from time to time. Feel free to adjust the list any way you see fit - can even go back to the "active" and "inactive" division if you want.

i think soon there'll be a west, north, east and etc list.. hehe

hey ya uploading the fotos we took on Sunday?

Flat Spots

An exhaust system serves as a pump to evacuate exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. This pump action also serves to suck fresh air-fuel mixture into the chamber. At certain parts of the rev range, the exhaust system will suck in fresh mixture just in time to increase torque. This is where exhaust systems boost power. However, the engine's cycle varies such that if the exhaust pump action is perfectly in sync at some places, it will inevitably be out of sync in other places. When it's out of sync, double caburetion occurs, creating a flat spot. So, flat spots are often rich spots.

I believe most flat spots on our Aprilias are caused by exhaust systems, especially those bikes fitted with aftermarket exhausts. If a flat spot's caused by richness, it'll burble and seem to choke. If it's caused by lean-ness, it'll simply cut out with no response.

This explains lots of things I've experienced. Rich flat spots are often eliminated by jetting down. However, overall power and peak power also decreases if you jet down till your flat spot disappears. That's because if you're running a perfect air-fuel mixture in the flat spot area, you'll be running lean in all other areas. If you refuse to live with a flat spot, you may be giving up the benefits of your exhaust system.

Flat spots can be minimised, for sure, but I'm not sure if the goal should be to eliminate them, especially if our goal is to maximise the high-end power of our revvy Aprilias. Personally, I've settled for a rich flat spot that's only slightly noticeable at 1/4 throttle. In exchange, my tacho needle flies when the power valve opens.

About lean flat spots: this is much simpler. Simply jet up. This may explain Andre's flat spot disappearing. I recently eliminated a lean flat spot at full throttle by jetting up too.

Thoughts and feedback anyone?

hmm... that puts things into perspective.

Always be prepared.

For the RS, unless the bike has been modded and tuned to an extent that the normal copper plugs wont do, then maybe consider plat plugs.

They were built to last longer than copper ones i.e. longer service intervals.

Denso, HKS, Greddy and whatever brands out there mainly come from the BIG 3 plug companies, NGK, Champion & Bosch.

Most of the aftermkt companies relabel their plugs and slap their own labels on them and sell them for more.

Unless ure running very high compression, have a raced engine, forget plat plugs, save your $$$.

If you think they give u an edge, go for it, whatever that makes you happy makes me happy, I believe its all in the head, wack it on the dyno, dont take my word for it.

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.
