Hello guys!

I know the forum is the best place for advice and so here i am wanting to find out a little from the knowledgeable out there.

Because i'm intending to ride up with my bro with our phantoms to malaysia, southern thailand and cambodia. We want to go to these countries to do charitable work. But before we do so, we must know if we're able to even get into these countries. So below is the description of what i need to know.

1. Permits, licenses and visas.

We do not know offhand what kind of permits we need but we have a vague idea of what we need. We might need to get a permit to do charity work.

Licenses required would be the conversion of our drivers license to an international one. But in these countries, we do not know if it is required. We also do not know if a driving/riding experience of at least 1 year is required.

Another license required is the license to bring our bike into the various countries. Malaysia would not be a problem but Thailand and Cambodia might pose some issues.

Visas for our stay in the various countries may be required. So we might have to contact the various embassies to inquire if we might need visas to stay in the country for at least 1 week.

So these are the things we noted down in our planning.

If any of you have ever rode your bike to thailand or cambodia, please give us advice as it is crucial for us.

And if anyone is interested in joining this trip, please do let me know. You can email me at [email protected]

We are planning to do this trip in September.

If you have a logcard or a photocopy of it use it. The logcard is issued for bikes registered or transferred on or before 28 Feb 2006.

If you registered or transferred your bike after that, use the LTA E-Services (need Singpass) to print out information about your vehicle which you can use at the border.

last min enquiry.. no time to get the log card from LTA-Eservices, wld the transfer vehicle document from LTA suffice? its like a log card too..

In Thailand need your log card. At the border you can purchase the insurance as well.

Cambodia I not sure, never go so far.

Since you / some are riding phantoms, your speed will not be that fast I suppose, also pit stops for refueling are important.

If non of you are experienced riding for long hours, I suggest you rest a day in Malaysia midway then continue up. It's no joke riding for 12hrs or more one shot, and more so on a bike.

Hello.

thanks for the information! How is it touring in thailand?is it scary?i read some blogs bout bikers who travel to these countries, seems like the people are hospitable.

then do we need a visa or smth or our passport only to go in?oh and whats the cost of insurance huh?(just a range)

thanks(:

If you're planning more than a week in Thailand, buy ins for a month. ! week insurance ard 200-250bht...1 mth ard 280-300bht. Dunno if increased...these are Dec '08 rates. There are 2 or 3 booths within walking distance from Thai immigration.

The roads in Thailand are beautiful, local road-users are ok but still pays to be alert. Yes, Thais are friendly. Deeper into Thailand, watch out for slow trucks/bikes that may pop out from side roads. Respect road signs.

Phantoms cruising at 110kph are fine but remember your brakes must be well-maintained.

You may not be able to make Hatyai in a day (possible in 10 hrs at 150kph average) so having an overniter somewhere in Ipoh is a good suggestion.

In Thailand, avoid night riding at all cost. I almost paid dearly when we were caught still riding at night. Unfamiliarity with roads, the urge to reach hotel asap, all cause riders to make stupid mistakes. So do plan your day outing well.

As for Cambodia, I'll need to find out more myself too. Sorry cant help.

Have a good safe trip bro!

HEY.thanks alot(:

another good advice!

you guys just make me so excited for this trip. But my parents are discouraging me cause they say 150/200cc bikes will burn out. Is that true? Cause if we take frequent stops like every 2 to 3 hours or so it'll be fine right? And any advise on symptoms that the bike engine is going to burn?

I dont believe age matters in any road trip, it's the mentality that counts.

Since you mentioned ur age grp, you guys are relatively a newbie on the road, and travelling in the NSHW requires contant concentration and some experience.

Overtaking is a dangerous affair on the NSHW for new riders. You will meet 10 wheelers, buses and cars going way beyond the 110kph limit there.

What I will worry for you is the way to Hatyai, on the NSHW. It's not the road is hard or something, but rather the traffic. We all seen/heard of the horrendous accidents on the NSHW, and personally I've seen some 1st hand.

1) What is your planned speed? This is crucial for estimating your time to reach Hatyai.

2) Do you know how to solve simple problems your bike may encounter? For ta150, you need to bring extra 2T, ta200 need engine oil. You'll need extra bulbs for the headlite, brakelite and/or signals. Impt to have for headlite n brakelite, since you may be riding into the nite.

Clutch cables if possible, bring an extra pc. Clutch cable breaking can happen outta sudden.

3) Maybe you can write up a brief plan of your travel doc here so we can help you review.

yeah,we're newbies.and we're already planning to go on such a trip.thats why we got some 'shaking of heads' response.

i believe you're a season rider!

max we would go is 120km/h. but i believe we'll stick to 110km/h.thinking of riding on road shoulder, what do u think?

btw,whats pc?

and alot of stuff you mentioned like changing of light bulb and all,i don't know how to do it man.but we're going to learn it up this couple of months.

and alright, we'll post up our brief plan soon...but u mean by our travel docs?you mean the journey plan?

hello guys!

we had a long discussion with our dad yesterday night regarding this trip. Well, skipping the long story and getting straight to the point, his conclusion was that he would not let us go alone(just the 2 of us).

So we came to an understanding that if we can get 10 people by the end of this month (30apr) to give a confirmation that they can go, then we'll proceed with the trip. But not to worry, while waiting for people, we'll still be planning the trip.

We'll post up the 'rough itenerary' up by the end of the week(hopefully)

One of the criteria for the group of 10 would be a trained medic(in case of accident).

another criteria is that you must have passion for both touring and serving(blessing the less fortunate)

so i hope you guys can spread the word and hopefully by the end of this month, we can get 10 people. Just reply your name if you're keen on going.

Trip will happen in September. Probably for 2 to 3 weeks(we can re-look at time span if you think its too long or short). Final dates will be out by the end of the week also.

TS, you can try a shorter trip 1st. Get a feel of it.

Maybe go to KL then back, that about equates to travelling to Hatyai in one day.

I'll be going KL this thurs nite, if you guys want, can follow me, then you can u-turn and head back home. just a suggestion, else, try one out in the day time, safer for you.

anyway guys, fyi:

found out that in Cambodia, just need to get a visa. Advisable to get it from the embassy here as if you get it there in cambodia, they'll rip you off. Log card not really required, but just bring in case.

Found out from a guy today. He rode his bmw up.

any other advice, pls put it down.will be glad to know(:

Hey guys, this is the rough itenary as promised.

Day 1

Set out from 2nd link at 5am. Avg. speed around 90-100km/h.

Reach and Rest at Yong Peng.

Set out to KL. Stop along the way at and R&R. Reach KL by around 11am to 12pm.

Lunch/Free and Easy till 1pm

Set out to Ipoh. Will reach by 330pm to 4pm.

Rest for the day.

Day 2

Set out to Penang at 6am. Reach Penang by 9 – 930am. Take a break. Walk around. Set out for Alor Setar at 1030am. Reach by 1230pm. Lunch till 130pm. Set out for border of thai and Malaysia. Approx 1h30mins. Anticipate jam and some delay at border. So est. that will clear border by 5pm.

Set out to Hat Yai. Estimated 1h30mins. Reach by around 7pm since might rest halfway.

(might need to take a train to Bangkok. So maybe can take the night one or if not the next morning. I’ll plan for the next morning)

Day 3

Take a train to Bangkok.

R&R at Bangkok.

Day 4

Set out from Bangkok at 7am to Sakaeo, approx. 3 to 4hours including rest time. Reach at 11am. Lunch till 12pm. Set out to Border of Thai and Cambodia. Anticipating that border would have some delay. So est. time to clear border and reach Cambodia (including travelling time of 1h30mins to border) would be 4pm. Set out to Sisophon. Approx 2h30min to 3h. But I believe it is not advisable to travel in Cambodia at night. So we might stop along the way to rest.

Day 5

Set out at 7am to Battambang. Est. time to travel there would be about 5 – 6hours including rest time and lunch. So would reach there around 1 or 2pm.

This is just the rough 5 day plan. I have yet to liase with the organization there. I’m just covering the travelling aspect here. Since it’ll take 5 days to travel to Cambodia, I believe we would take slightly longer to return. So I’m estimating 6 or 7 days. I’m estimating some charity work there for about 5 days (travelling around and doing the work)

Thus, add up, 5 + 5 + 7 days total is 17 days.

Hope this is a good enough consideration.

I believe this trip will happen in the first or second week of September.
