I am using air horn too. Very loud..even i also cannot tahan. Anyway, I find singapore drivers all very impatient.Like to horn, scared their horn rusty if long time never use like that.So need to good horn to match them.

One thing i find interesting is the cross junction, cars and lorries like to move into the yellow box even when there is a heavy jam ahead. And when their lights turned red, the opposite junction cannot move , then u get prepared to hear all the horn beep beep beep...

But does it help? wat can they do??

My bike is due for inspection soon.

Last year, I went to one of the inspection centre and I got this ridiculous reason for failing my Stebel Magnum Horns.

The inspector was shocked when he pressed the horn. He claimed that it is air horn. Which I told him politlely that it is electric horn. He took a closer look and said,"Look at the shape... It's snail shape so it's not approve. Go and change the horn and come back again." I then LL go back and change the horn and he passed my inspection.

So this year before I go for inspection, I'm writing to LTA to make an enquiry in order not to receive double standards from the authorised inspection centres. Below is the enquiry that I sent to LTA and awaiting their answer. Just posted so maybe have to wait a week or so?

Dear Sir/ Ma'am,

I will like to make an enquiry with regards to the type of horns allowed by LTA.

From the One Motoring Website, the only horn stated not allowed is the air horn.

Does this means any other type of horn is allowed as long as it is not air horn?

I am considering installing after market horns for my motorcycle. One consideration is the Stebel Magnum horns for motorcycles. Below is the website for the horn that I am referring to.

http://www.stebel.it/stebel/index.htm

Is this particular brand and model legal to be installed and used? This is important for me and most motorcyclist to know as there is several occassions of double standards from different inspection centres therefore I will like to find out from the main source once and for all.

Thank you.

Hope this will be beneficiary to most of us.

I finally got my reply from LTA regarding the stebel horns, below is the reply.

Dear Mr Lim,

MOTORCYCLE HORN

FEEDBACK NUMBER: 318430

Please refer to your email enquiry of 28 Dec 2005.

2. We would like to inform you that every vehicle shall be fitted with a horn capable of giving audible and sufficient warning of its approach or position. We do not allow the fitting of a horn that gives an unduly harsh, shrill, loud or alarming sound (similar to that of an air horn), or a multi-tone horn capable of producing a succession of different notes on vehicles.

3 Horns that are fitted on motor vehicles here must also comply with internationally recognised standards, such as those adopted in the European Union countries, Japan and the United States.

4 As far as we are aware, not all models of ‘Stebel’ after-market horns are suitable for use on vehicles. For example, the two harmonised tones TM 80/2 Series that produces a significantly loud sound as compared to a normal vehicle horn is not allowed. We have, however evaluated the single tone TM 80/1 Series and we have no objection to the installation of the low or high tone TM 80/1 Series.

5 We hope the above clarifies. Should you have further enquiries, please contact us at 1800 – 2255 582.

Yours sincerely,

The reply stated that TM 80/2 is not allowed but TM80/1 is allowed. I suppose Magnum 2 belongs to the 80/2 series.

I just fitted my bike with Magnum2 horn. Right after my inspection. So, safe for at least a year for me.

Actually I checked Stebel's website.

Magnum is in the TM 80/2 series.

TM 80/1 is not the Magnum at all.
