Hi guys

Is it a possible to change different brands for the front and back tire? I mean my back tire was changed to Z4 yeSTerday but did not change the front as it was STill quite good. Front tire is Z4 also. But lets say in the near future, if I were to change the front to BT021, would there be any problems?

Cheers

I love my original Macadam though there are opinions other tires are far better. It gives me the extra milleage that I need >not into corners so Z4/Z6 are out for me.Try Z4 before...shiok..but tire gets bald fast.Right now on BT021.Change $300 plus range.couldnt remember exact price.Previous models seem to have the goddamn wobbling problem thingy after certain milleage...Don't know why also. The tire looks promising though I feel that the profile for the rear at 160 still looks abit smaller than 160 of other makes.

Just share my experience on riding the ST11 95 model for 2.5yrs. Just sold it off with a 6k loss. Now riding 2002 R1.

Previous ST was a nice comfortable and very comfortable. Couldnt ask too much for the power. So after the 1 yr was quite ok. Normal maintainence.

After 1 yr ridnig it, oil start leaking all over. Changed the gasket near the front. Only to know the oil is leaking from behind.

After which problems seem to come one by one.

1) It broke down on SLE, towed the bike back.

Only to find out that, my batt is flat, my rectifier burnt, my alternater gone. My waterpump spoil. I almost gone crazy. No choice but to fix...cost me fortune. I would have sell it but i will lose more if i sell it.

After fixing, i realise that after riding for less then 20mins, the temperture shoots up to red line. I suspect, water pump is not fixed properly. Cos, I just flushed out the coolant and replace new one 1 week ago only and checked my radiator was workin ok.

I pushed my bike aside and its some heavy piece of metal man.. When i kicked my gear to neutral, the green light doesnt comes up, i off my engine and try to start again... it doesnt start, totally no sound comes up. I was left stranded for 30mins-45mins... i on the engine again and da neutral light comes up and the engine started. I was thinkin... i was only going to orchard from marine terrace, less then 15min ride there and i took 1hour. After which, when there are no green light,I have to keep my side stand, hold da clutch and start it before it can be ignited. 3months down the road, When it heats up and there are no neutral light, the bike totally cannot start. I must wait for a good 30mins for bike to cool down before it can start.

This problem persisted, i juse rode to my destination and i wouldt off the engine til i reach my destination.

Other then that, all other problems are within my control eg. Oil tank got scratch, my side box got forced open, my front rim was dent while riding to Pasir Gudang. My right side mirror was broken got knocked off by a m'sian kupkia while going in JB to pump petrol n supper with frds.

Overall, the performance was... really comfortable. Mine was a white ST. I didnt even mod it to look like TP. Dunno why some many problems.

If u lookin for comfort, stability and eye candy. Its a really good bike tho i had so many problems with it. NO regrets.

Hi Noobber..Sorry to hear that you went through alot of problem with your previous ride. However do take not your bike is of US model..Currently those with PE series should more less be much better as they have made some improvement on it.Of course a problem if not rectify would lead to more bigger problems so its best to troubleshoot spot on the problem before it affects other function of the machine. But sometimes I think "luck" also play a factor in your machine..Some have tons of problms when they get..some is just a breeze with theirs...BUT at the end of the day, I believe those who ride an ST would still admit its a great ride, which I believe summarise your post. :thumb:

Thanks cbkooky! Thanks for ur feedback. It was a really comfortable ride. Luck really does play a part. Old machine has their own problems. Mine was too much. Anyway, big machine doesnt mean higher maintainence, just slightly pricey parts only. Those wana ride big machine, must prepare to sprend. Ride ON!!!!

Hi fellow bikers,

After riding dirt bikes & sport bikes for a looong time, I've decided to try another form of riding- long distance touring. I've read reviews & asked around my biking kakis and felt that the ST1100 would be a very good choice. I also did gain some info from others ST threads in the forums but I hope other lau chau ST riders here could help me out with these honest (although some might be ridiculous) questions. Thanks a million!

1. I'm looking at 4-5 yr old STs, what's the average market price for these models?

2. What the capacity of each side box?

3. I've read that Macadams are pretty lasting tires for the ST, any other good choice of tires, especially for hitting that stretch of twisty roads?

4. If I were to get a 5 yr old bike, what are the wear & tear I should look out for?

5. What's the insurance premium for a mid-30s guy with around 20 yrs of riding experience? (TP fire theft)

6. Are there Galfer/ Braking wave front brake rotors for the ST? (They work oh-so-well on my sport bikes)

7. There were rumors of STXs being prone to hi-speed weaving (I might be wrong though). Is there such handling problems with the 1100?

8. What's the servicing schedule like?

9. I've noticed that ST riders leave their brake lines stock. Is it possible to upgrade to steel braided ones? Are the ABS ones really that good?

10. Any good after market exhaust systems?

11. Any frequent/profound wiring/electrical problems?

12. Which production year STs are worth considering?

13. What are other good mods for touring and daily commuting?

Again, thanks for reading this thread and helping me out.

hi archer..nice to meet u.

hope my answers will help u out

1. I'm looking at 4-5 yr old STs, what's the average market price for these models?

mine is 4yrs old got it at 12k

2. What the capacity of each side box?

hmm.. in liters not sure but each box can put 1 open face and 1 raincoat wit a lil space for water bottel.

3. I've read that Macadams are pretty lasting tires for the ST, any other good choice of tires, especially for hitting that stretch of twisty roads?

yes i read macadams are indeed good tires but i cant seem to get a shop to purcahse them. however there has been romours of battelax 021 to be the best twisty road use. i just chane 020 last week.so far pleased wit the profile

4. If I were to get a 5 yr old bike, what are the wear & tear I should look out for?

hmm.. this one only Mr simon soh is the best here..

7. There were rumors of STXs being prone to hi-speed weaving (I might be wrong though). Is there such handling problems with the 1100?

i would like to kno on this too....anyone??

8. What's the servicing schedule like?

some of us follow milage of the bike which is recoomanded by eveyone.

keep it in schedule and bike will last.

9. I've noticed that ST riders leave their brake lines stock. Is it possible to upgrade to steel braided ones? Are the ABS ones really that good?

i feel its unessary waste of $$ and it best to keep the $$ aside for bike ups n downs

10. Any good after market exhaust systems? as above save the $$

11. Any frequent/profound wiring/electrical problems? depands from bike to bike.. if the previous owner did alot then.... but if he did it all rite then no probs

12. Which production year STs are worth considering?

i want to know also..

13. What are other good mods for touring and daily commuting?

i guess.. ride safe keep bike safe dun over rev the rest is up to u on maintence of the beaST!

i hope i manage some of the Qs rightly..i may be wrong too.. but if anyone has a good ans. pls tell us so i can learn too..

cheers.

1. I'm looking at 4-5 yr old STs, what's the average market price for these models?

Bro,usually we do not discuss about pricing on this thread.

2. What the capacity of each side box?

20++ litres if I am not wrong, like the answer you got, can put full face helmet inside.

3. I've read that Macadams are pretty lasting tires for the ST, any other good choice of tires, especially for hitting that stretch of twisty roads?

Macadam are good. But too hard. Not good for cornering and wet weathers. You can try Metzeler Z6, Michelin Pilot Sport, BT020, BT021, Avon and the list continue.

4. If I were to get a 5 yr old bike, what are the wear & tear I should look out for?

Important for me is to check the radiator, radiator hoses, brake calipers (any jam), front forks (any leak), carburettor manifold (rubber fitting), most important, listen to the engine (whether very rough), cone bearing for handle bar?

5. What's the insurance premium for a mid-30s guy with around 20 yrs of riding experience? (TP fire theft)

Should be around 400++ to 600++ depending on who you get from.

6. Are there Galfer/ Braking wave front brake rotors for the ST? (They work oh-so-well on my sport bikes)

So far, have not seen any.But others in the thread might give you some idea.

7. There were rumors of STXs being prone to hi-speed weaving (I might be wrong though). Is there such handling problems with the 1100?

If you plan to put a box behind? Yes there will be hi-speed weaving. But adjust the rear suspension should not be any problem. STX1300 also the same.Adjust already noproblem.

8. What's the servicing schedule like?

Every 5,000 km. Even for synthetic oil (not 10,000 km like everyone says.Unless you want your bike to have engine problem). If you change regularly, the bike willnot give any problem.

9. I've noticed that ST riders leave their brake lines stock. Is it possible to upgrade to steel braided ones? Are the ABS ones really that good?

Yes, possible.I upgraded mine. ABS not very sure for ST1100.But for STX1300 you have to change over 10 hoses.

10. Any good after market exhaust systems?

Yes there is, but not much choice.

11. Any frequent/profound wiring/electrical problems?

So, far all my buddies have not face this problem.

12. Which production year STs are worth considering?

The last ST1100 that was brought in was in 2001.

13. What are other good mods for touring and daily commuting?

Try not to mod the bike too much. But one good mod you can do is to add a water bottle holder.

Hope this will answer all your question.

Hi

With regards to water bottle, what holders do you all buy and where do you mount them?

think any bicycle shop can buy. there's a type that can be adjust to fit bigger bottle.

& it can be fit on either side of the handle bar, just 2 screw but need to change the screw.

any bicycle water bottle holder will do. One of the holes will be misaligned so you have to use a existing hole and drill a new one to be able to fit it to your handle.

Daiso at IMM has holder going for $2.

The mods are endless to what you can think off...As far as I am concern it should not affect the overall outlook too much and should be a plus pt more than a hindrance...

1)You can have a MUST..water bottle holder.Gona help you with the long rides.

2)12v acc socket. Some say it drains off electricity blabla...so individual.

3) Radio for the long rides...

4)Foglights for the long dark highway in our neighbouring country..

5)Topbox??Helpful if you have extra luggage. For me ..a topbox is like your wallet..dont leave home without it..hehehe

6)Tall shield.Helps in diverting that extra air...

7)The list goes on......infact most of the stuff mentioned I had it fixed. My advice...For those who have just collect your new ride..save up the money and learn about your bike more..You be surprised when it comes to replacing the wear and tear parts.Accessories and mods are nothing when your bike break down. So focus more on proper servicing and maintenance of the bike if then you have extra cash..add some mods if you want.

1. As said before... we discourage used machine price dicussion openly.

2. Not sure about the actual capacity but no plm with a FF helmet & a set of raincoat

3. Mitchelin Macadam50 tire is a pair high mileage tire, it has been with me for many2 rides & gone thru the test on PG circuit proven it's reliablity. I dont have the chance to try BT020 & Pirillie Dragon, perhaps the guys who r with it will tell u more. :)

My advice is know ur needs before u select the set of rubbers, due to nature of its weight & straighter sitting posture u need to adjust urself from time to time from sportsbike to ST1100.

4. That will depends if the mileage is geniunely clocked & how well the maintenance history, else some stripping will find out.

5. We r about the same, for my 4yr+ cost me about less than $600 I think.. cant remember exactly.

6. hmm.... .never seen before.

7. Think should let a STX1300 owner reply u, ST1100 never got such plm

8. Most general servicing reccomended in manual is less than 12,000km, other than that it depends on how u wana perform it if u have the budget. There'a a list of periodic service which is not so frequently done can be found inside service & repair manual. The major component is the time-belt, should be replace within 100-150,000km.

9. Why waste $$, but steel braided clutch hose will be a wise decision.

10. So fierce siah..!

11. Mine is 100% stock, so far so good now no plm. :D

12. hmm....... that depends on ur budget.

13. See as per cbkooky's recent posting.

only those ST that are meant for TP has fog lamps mounts. It located just above the mirrors.

These TP model ST also has a different engine cut off switch from the normal ST. Basically more switches meant for lightings,

9. normal st11 would be economical to change, but abs st11 and stx will cost loads. unless your sure you can stay with the bike for more than 5 yrs then go fix it. got a quote for abs st11 8 braided lines which cost S$100 each without installation... :faint: actually the stock linked + abs brakes are working quite well already

10. seen 1 with yoshimura end cans b4 but no others already. ebay does sell some 2 brothers end cans n full systems for both st11 n stx but dun think can pass inspection here. anyway...st is suppose to fly pass ppl silently lah.
