hi, i'm new to inline skating, and i bought a pair of skates from Royal Sporting House recently and i realised dat it's not smooth when i tried to skate today. I tried on smooth terrains but after i push, it doesn't skate for very long. How do i remedy this or is it because the skates are new?

Yours must be beginner blades .i.e.the buckle type if i am not wrong. I bought a pair last time also from royal sporting house. The wheels could be plastic wheels for beginners thats why so slow. All u need to do is to go to a skate shop and change the wheels to abec 7 and you will be able to enjoy and smooth and fast skate. The full set of wheels for both shoes cost $60 for me.

Cheers and enjoy your new hobby.

Abec 5 is a bit slow.. If can try changing to abec 7 wheels. I' m sure u will enjoy it.:thumb:

Golden Rules

Three things to work on every time you skate

By Joey Mantia

Jan. 18, 2008

I always tell people that skating is 90 percent technical.

If you have strong legs but weak technique, you're like a powerful car without wheels.

That's why it's so important to work on technique.

Even after years of training, there are still a few technical challenges I try to work on every time I skate.

1) Arm Swing

Your legs follow what your arms do, so practice bringing your hand up in front of your face on each forward swing and fully extending your arm on each back swing.

2) Knee Bend

The lower you are, the farther you can extend your legs.

When skating indoors or on a small track, pretend that you're sitting in a chair as you move down the straightaway. Then try as hard as you can not to lift up as you go around the corner.

3) Ankle Support

I always try to focus on keeping my ankles nice and firm when I skate. If your ankles aren't firm, and give as you push, you lose power.

There are several ways to practice good ankle support. Here are four of them:

1) Skate with your buckles loose and your laces untied.

2) Jump in place on one foot at a time.

3) Balance on a trampoline on one foot at a time.

4) If you have access to a gym with a half ball, balance on the ball, one foot at a time, while lowering and raising yourself into the skating position.

My coach Renee Hildebrand used to always tell me, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect."

This is especially important when you are working on technique. If you don't focus all your attention on it, you won't get the results you are looking for.

Joey Mantia is the world's top inline speed skater. At last summer's World Championships in Colombia, the 21-year-old Florida native won seven gold medals and — for the second year running — the overall title on both the track and road course. In addition, he popped over to Europe last summer for three World Inline Cup races and won two of them, despite the fact that unlike the other top skaters, he was competing without the benefit of teammates. Now living in Olympia, WA, he works and races for his sponsor, Luigino Racing. He plans to continue inline racing this year; however, eventually he would like to give the ice a try in pursuit of his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal.

Skating Safely on Trails

Eight rules for skating on multi-use paths

By Greg Major

(Originally posted March 2, 2007)

With summer right around the corner, skaters everywhere are once again venturing outside to train on multi-use paths and trails.

These ribbons of asphalt can be found in most urban areas and provide skaters with great opportunities for recreation and training.

But as much as we like them, we have to share them with cyclists, runners, walkers, children and other users.

The mix can be dangerous. ... A dog may sometimes lunge at you. A child may sometimes veer into your path.

But following these eight rules (and using common sense and courtesy), you are likely to avoid injury, all the while maintaining your position as a welcome citizen of the trail.

1.) Wear your helmet.

I am amazed when I see skaters decked out in every pad known to man but with nothing on their noggins.

Remember: Road rash heels fast, but a good bump on the head could cause you to eat with a straw for the rest of your life.

2.) Don't expect others to make room for you.

Skate with the knowledge that everybody believes they are the king of the road. Be prepared to make room for trail hogs — and, while you're at it, set a good example by making room for others.

3.) Be polite.

Let people know before you pass by calling out, "On your left." And don't expect people to get out of your way just because you're doing interval training or trying to set a world record.

Forget about consistent speed when you're skating on a crowded trail.

4.) Become familiar with the paths and trails you skate on.

Find out where they are likely to be congested and where there are blind turns or other hazards, like hills or steps. When you know what's coming, it's easier to react.

5.) Know your ability.

Don't take chances on a crowded trail. If you're not sure about a steep downhill, start at the bottom and work your way up. When in doubt, leave it out!

6.) Don't use headphones on a crowded trail.

Skating to music is fun but risky. It makes it harder to hear the sounds around you ... like that cyclist who wants to pass or that pit bull hiding in the bushes.

Using a cell phone while skating is just … well ... let's not even go there.

7.) Don't skate alone on isolated trails.

You never know what could happen, and it's always good to have someone around if there's trouble.

8.) Remember to have fun.

After all, that's why we're skaters, right?
