i was once trying to make a decision between these 2.. if you are looking for underseat exhaust bikes, gsr also underseat.. r1 also..

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

how to try both out? dealer got test ride de meh? i am looking for sports tourer or road bike to r1 is out of the question.

up to you to think how.. :cheeky:

vfr:

+ full fairing

+ honda

+ vtec

- heavier

v4 engine, + or -? i would love to own 1. but it wasnt a criteria.

fz6:

+ more common. - point to some pple. but to me, more common also means parts more readily available.

+ lighter than vfr

- not as reliable as honda vfr? i dont know. but there's always that impression that honda bikes are more reliable.

i wanted a full fairing bike. and this will be my only transport, so, readily available parts are very impt. price is also another factor, with 10k you can get a 2007-08 fz6, but only a 2003 vfr.

shall post some overseas reviews of riders who have rode both before:

VFR:

Pro: -looks great

-best headlights of any motorcycle

-V4 smoothness, power and sound

-decent windprotection, OEM luggage available

-seems better built than the yamaha

Con: -Gotta take those fairings off to do anything

-surging and vtec transition can be an issue (surging is a main reason i sold mine)

-Valve checks are expensive (but many put them off for long periods with no problems)

-Some have wiring/RR issues (my '04 had none)

-fuel mileage (i averaged 40mpg no matter how i rode, best i got was 42)

-known to have thermostats go bad, known to overheat in traffic (mine did both)

FZ6:

Pro: -No fairings to take off

-Great fuel econ (i usually get 47-50mpg, best of 53)

-Nice and light with a good upright seating position

-Lots of aftermarket support

Con: -That buzzyness (you get used to it, but its there)

-Gotta wind it out to get that power (not an issue for me, some people don't like it though)

-Some controls and such are kinda cheap feeling

All in all, for my daily riding/commuting i choose the FZ6. If i lived somewhere where i could carve corners all the time and twist the throttle a lot and hit the track consistently, VFR. Now the hard part is finding a VFR w/o the transition and surging issues. They are around, and every bike is different. Everything else can be fixed, but there are no known fixes for these issues, just band-aids.

VFR - radiator mount on the side fairing right? Hydraulic clutch operation as well.

PRO-ARM on its rear, not sure if its shaft or chain driven.

Pricing of FZ6, as written approximately 10K++ for 08/09 model... currently has two variation, FZ6 manufacture in 2006 and before and FZ6 S2 first manufacture in 2007 till now. S2 model did the most and its last update on the machine, most significant changes would be increase in horsepower (many more to be name),instrument panel, head cowl and rear swing arm. There's a 'N' model and Fazer model of it, simply means Naked and Half faired Fazer. Full set of side and belly fairing available in the market as well. The melody of the engine are unique as well.

TS can consider FZ8 soon...

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine

Hmm. I wonder what's the appeal of underseat exhaust? :)

If anything, it is hotter as it's closer to your butt and on some bikes, it blackens and aged your bikes' rear to the exhaust plume.

The FZ6 engine is tune for high rev, maxing hp within its 600cc, thus sacrificing torque at low rpm.

I have heard comments that in singapore normal street riding, a vtec3 super4 actually feels more powerful than a FZ6. In my opinion, a more similar comparison is between the VFR800 and FZ1 (1,000cc).

The VFR800 feels like a more powerful 600cc sport bike. But it feels like it has great build quality.

Being a full fairing bike, dropping your bike means $$$.

The rider posture of both bikes are slightly different. You got to see which one is not comfortable for you.

if TS is not asking for performance. but maintenance, fz6 is definitely lower. Less complication of vtec, and better FC.

for handling wise, fz6 have a better geometry for commute (more upright), and vfr is more sporty. build quality, I personally feel vfr is better than fz6.

in terms of spending wise, if u r a bike siao, u will save more money in long term with vfr cos there's much lesser after market parts. :cheeky:

if u are concerns with parts availability, u dont have to worry for both bikes. Most Honda and Yamaha are aplenty in in island.

as for underseat exhaust.. these are personal choices. some like GP style, some like underseat, and etc. but as one of the bro here suggested, the gsr also underseat. but the trend nowadays seems to be be gp style.

Price wise, FZ6 is definately cheaper (road tax, insurance and machine price).

Maintanence wise, normal for an inline 4 engine...just follow the user guide and u should be safe.

aint sure about a v4 engine maintanence though cause never ride it b4...

engine wise i think most of the viffer only change timing belt & valve clearance for the 6th gen... for 5th gen mayb for valve clearance only...

center up under seat exhaust are much more appealing to me... yes it require some regular cleaning.

heat wise, been FZ6 pillion before, the heat shield and guard works pretty well. The geometry of FZ6 tank was unique, its taller and compact. Cutting of the seat was comfortable and its wide.
