i just got my license for 2 weeks, have been riding everyday, seriously i still don't dare to squeeze in between cars after looking at those videos the instructors have shown us during our theory lessons...

How accident have happen to motorbike while squeezing thru traffic, the video just keep playing back on my mind...lol but i try to avoid staying directly behind the cars, just a little bit off the lane, so if any jam brakes i could avoid...but i still dare not squeeze in between the cars...

anyone here who doesn't squeeze in between cars while riding?:cheeky:

I travel allong braddel/lornie everyday to get from hougang to clementi and i have to lanesplit or i'll have to wake up at 5am to travel there.

Lanesplitting is freaking dangerous, but here's how you can possibly reduce that danger.

  • Take bus take train
  • Sit taxi, Drive a car

Those points are for people who reaaaaaaaaaaally think its veeeery veeeery dangerous and life threatening to split and the very thought of splitting makes their knees go weak. Furthermore, they at home might have 2 wife and 8 kids that depend on him to put food on the table.

But for everyone else, here's what we can do.

  • Beginners try to get used to lanesplitting past stationary traffic, its easier than splitting past slow moving traffic
  • Predict where the vehicle in front left and right are going to move
  • Usually, cars will tend to inch towards the left or right when prior to changing lanes cos the driver is checking the mirrors and inadvertedly steering the vehicle to the direction
  • When splitting past stationary vehicles, signs to look out for that a vehicle is about to come out is, turning of the driver's head, signal lights, The front wheel is turned a direction, and the vehicle is not in the centre of the lane but at the edge of it.
  • When splitting past vehicles that you are unsure that will change lanes and not see you, always give a tap , or a few taps of the horn before going past them. Don't bother if you are paiseh to keep pressing the horn, this is your own personal safety that's concerned.
  • Watch out for those white/yellow lane markings while splitting.... those are as slippery as ice when wet.

Of cos this is all great theory and all, but the only way to get better at it is to practise, practise and practise.

I only lane split during bumper to bumper traffic.

Never understand why many riders insist on splitting lanes even when traffic is smooth and moving at 80 to 90km/h. Over confidence? Fool-hardy? Show-off? Someone please enlighten.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator

I don't lane split. I would rather be late, or leave home early if needed.

I always tell myself this..."A bike is not a vehicle which can shorten your travelling time, it is something for you to do while travelling."

As compared to sitting on bus or train with nothing to do, staring into blank space or just nodding off, bike keeps you alert all the way from start to end, giving you chances to make important decisions and gain life experiences...makes travelling more enjoyable/exciting (Doesn't necessary mean speeding!).

If really needed to rush for time, or don't like to wait in line during jam, I suggest taking public transport.

If lane splitting really gets to you, then don't.

If you want, then dun take the lead, just follow the front bike which lane split, but do not too close.

There are some who lane splits, but go real slow, causing a huge jam behind him. This is real inconsiderate riding, IMHO.

Well, riders are individuals.

A normal rider would think that lane splitting bike is suicidal.

The lane splitting rider would think that the other bike he passed should probably stay at home.

haha...

That said, I came across recently this accident involving a malaysian cub and a taxi.

You can say that perhaps prejudice is involved, but i am not surprised by this accident given the general way they ride and drive.

I am quite sure most of us while lane splitting and following the bikes in front, have came across incidents whereby these jokers came alongside with you and try to cut in.

Ride safe and sensibly.

And avoid idiots. :)

it depends. if im late, naturally and obviously i will speed, lane split and overtake whenever possible. its dangerous i know, but bo bian, when i am late i will really ride differently although i usually do my best to ride safety.

if im not late, i will ride safety and not do those dangerous acts. ;)

hey, thats true, i do agree with ya...

my friends and my manager always say me: HELLO U RIDING MOTORBIKE EH..why you stuck in jam? you must learn how to split lanes.. -_-"

Especially my manager like to lecture me saying why you so early leave home for work? and so late to go home?

i mention: i prefer to avoid traffic jam and also it will be really enjoyable riding without keep braking...

don't force yourself to lane split, if you're not comfortable doing it, don't.

i rather you arrive home later in one piece than becoming luncheon meat.

anyway, i also haven lanesplitted yet even though its been 2 months since i got my licence. not ready yet i feel for myself. still trying to train myself how to corner, shift gears, anticipate etc etc.

One advice given to me which I hold dearly is that while lane-splitting, always look far ahead, do not look at the side of the cars that you are travelling in between; some tend to do that to 'gauge' the space in order not to hit the cars. Our normal peripheral vision will automatically gauge the space at the sides of our bikes as we go through.

Hard to explain it in words though; but yup,I am much more confident now in lane-splitting, especially during heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic; but never will I split when I'm carrying a pillion. That particular fall we had due to lane-splitting, made me learnt my lesson. :)

I like to plan my riding with little traffic too...enjoy riding without much stopping. But I like the occasional red lights...can relax for awhile, adjust a bit, push my fringe back into helmet if it drops out...and look at people in bus! :cheeky:

Usually if I'm the first to stop in traffic junction, I will stop in the middle of the lane to give space for riders who lane split to the front.
