the problem sometimes is whether have the tools to do it.

Always ride safely and defensively.

Repair bike cheap and fast,

Repair body expensive and slow.

my once very 2weeks diy maintenance includes:

1) lubing of chain, lifting rear end up on side stand, spraying lube, wiping chain and then move on tot he next section till whole chain is completed.

2) pumping my tube tyres with a bicycle pump

3) general checking of nuts and screws

4) 2T level check and topping up if necessary.

I would leave the other stuffs for my mech as i lack the skill, and tools for it.

However, skills i would like to pick up are:

1) changing of tyre tube (front and rear)

2) tightening of chain

3) removing front and rear tyres.

These skills will give me more confident when I travel to msia.

To all who want to DIY,

If u hv the thinking to DIY, u hv the direction. This is the 1st requirment for DIYer.

2. Get all the basic tools. u may need to invest about $200

3. Download service manual, this is to learn the theory

4. Do simpler task, that is the basic maintance.

5. Invest in tools again, advance tools such as electrial dill, die grinder, special tool ect.

6. At Intermediary Level - u should able to do all the task in the service manual except engine overhual.

7. Advance level - better leave it to the workshop/agent. unless u hv lot of space & time.

i've diy replace chain, sprocket, carburettor jetting n tuning, clutch n throttle cable, replace suspension spring, change exhaust, tighten steering stem.

Dun remember brake pad, but some calipers are really simple to deal with.

My advice is, make fren with mechanic, and diy in their presence, using their tools.

To get started your tool kit, here's what i suggest.

Spanners (with common rings) of the common sizes: 8,10,13,14,17 and i forgot which are the other sizes... if i'm wrong pls correct. Bought the whole set for $6 at sungei road.

A Hex key set (aka allen keys): Get those that come in like SOG can fold in and out; reason being you can unscrew nuts using 90 degree angles that has more force as opposed to piece by piece allen keys. Bought $15.90 from hardware shop.

Cross and flat head screw drivers.

Blue/Black tape.... $2 for 3 at Daiso.

Tire repair kit $3.90 from mustafa.

Whole set up should cost less than $30.

Heat shrink tubing if you wanna protect your wires as well. Especially relevant for scramblers. The high vibration tends to strip the wires over time.
