Inline 4 VS V - twins

Inline 4

Power Delivery is smooth. In the sense that the powerband curve is pretty flat. Power come smoothly from low to top rpm Meaning easy daily point A to B transport. Power on demand when you feel like playing. High top speed and able to maintain it. Fuel economy is excellent compared to V-twins. Maintainence is cheaper compared too as market is bigger. But boring as other competitor model were either offering similar performance or feeling. Nothing special. Another big bike on the road.

V - twins

Super raw power at low end. And i mean real fat raw power. Imagine 500cc per piston pumping out all the power... nothing come close to this cc / piston ratio. The exhuast sound it give is like lion roar... Really killer. Take RVF's growl and multiple it by 3 ??

Powerband curve is fat at low, great at midrange which is good for track. As you will be using around these range when you are playing at gudang. Downside is heavy fuel consumption, plus expensive maintanence. Cos not much motorshop does its repair. Expensive part cos small market. But when on road, it gives an aura and respect. At least i felt that way. Its a world class superbike after all and Rossi used to own one.

2000 R1 vs VTR SP2

2000 R1 is carb version right? Cheap and good. More of a better choice if you not going to ride long. As resale market is bigger and better. 4 year old bike also mean depreciation already drop to its lowest. May be lose 2k to 3k per year?

VTR SP2

New bike with small resale market. High depreciation must be taken into consideration. But glamour and extreme fun come at a price. Why not choose a SP1 as the difference is not much. And it had a better holding value.

Personal conclusion

If i got the dough, definately a SP2 with all the mods i can find. You are gonna play now or when you reach 50 years old? Buy something you like and you can AFFORD~!! and not to regret later. HEHE

The Yamaha 2000 R1 and Honda VTR Sp2 are both sport bikes but for different types of users. So if you are thinking of getting either one of these bikes, you should think carefully about what type of rider you are.

The R1 bike is for the majority of sports bike riders. That is occasional track days and majority of time road use (commuting, sport touring). On the road riding, the R1 might go faster and in a more comfortable way than the SP2.

The Sp2 is very different. It is develop with a priority to go fast on the track. Compared to the R1, Sp2 sacrifices some road-bike qualities in order to go faster on the track eg: hard suspension, snatchy low-rev throttle, high fuel consumption, lower top speed and uncomfortable riding position. Perhaps think of it as a Ducati track bike but with japanese quality. When you want to win a competition on the track, you would want to be on the SP2 over the R1.

So if you want to go very fast on the track or want a highly track-oriented bike, then SP2 is for you. If you want a bike that you can use comfortably on a daily basis, then the R1 may be more suitable.

bro, its not the engine that is making the noise then ... its the timing chain that is making the noise in your case ....

Cause all yamaha big bikes has a downside on the timing chain. It makes more noise than other brands and is incurable .... :cheeky:

VTR1000R SP2 is still in production as the RC51 in US. It has monster torque and razor sharp handling, although it is on the heavy side. I've seen someone pull a clean, smooth wheelie at less than 20km/h.

Bear in mind that this bike was built purely for racing - similar to Ducati 999R. Yamaha R1 was built for generic use, because it was the only 1000cc sports bike from that factory. Honda at that time already had the superb CBR954RR, so the RC51 or VTR1000R was built purely to meet Superbike homologation requirements. It will be uncomfortable and almost a waste to use it for street only.

If you really want to get the most out of it, you probably will want a full titanium / carbon fiber exhaust system, because those two stainless steel stock endcans weigh a ton. And the exhaust note - it sends tingles down my spine just like a Ducati. :lovestruck: It is 10 times more powerful and bassy than a RVF with illegal endcan.

If you have the finances, go for it! It will definitely turn more heads than the latest R1 or CBR. Trust me.

pls... all the bikes nowadays r twin cam...to b exact, it's double overhead cam(dohc) engine. so do R1. if u talk about the engine , u should call them V-twin or inline-4 engine, not single cam or twin cam

Posted

ha... sp2 or 999r not really tat good anymore compare 2 tis day inline engine bikes, due 2 their weight to power ratio. but if u really wants a performance bike, u should get a inline engine bike like R1, srad 1000 or zx10r.

well, i owed a sp1 last time ( sp1 is more torquey compare to sp2), i m sure it can never outrun an inline engine bike at tis time due 2 their power to weight ratio. if u don believe, can can go ahead a get a v-twin but don live to regrets unless u r getting a v-4 engine ducati 1098, then i haf nothing 2 say

Tok so many, i think i can sum up in a phrase liao. It just a matter of heaven and earth. Of you wanan ride normal and have the feel of high speed, you belong to the earth....If you always dream of being a racer in a CIRCUIT and think of being one in the future and like the power deliever with an expense of lower top speed, than you belong to the heaven. Earth=R1 and Heaven =SP2
