Hi guys! I've been wondering for quite some time now. How long do your helmets last?

I got 2 SUMO helmets that came free when i got my bike and they lasted for less than 6 months. Visor got scratched badly due to just normal everyday riding and became cloudy.

I got an MFizz Evo II helmet that lasted me for almost a year now but a few months back, the rubber started peeling out, the cheek pads stated to "corrode" away, exposing the cushion inside and the D-rings are rusted.

I clean my helmets twice a month, wiping them, tightening the screws etc, but it seems that either helmets are not meant to last or i am doing something wrong. I don't throw my helmets around the place, keep them indoors in a dry place and rarely drop them. I do wear them everyday though.

Is it just me or are helmets meant to be this way? I don't want to keep buying new helmets all the time.

If im nt mistaken...ur helmet shld last maximum 1 year, provided it doesnt suffer from any hard impacts...exposure to weathering will somehow deteriorate the inner core of the helmet thus making it less safe for riders to wear.....however,once a hard impact is experienced, riders shldnt use the particular helmet again...safety issues...hope tis helps... :)

So in other words, its time to buy a new helmet? I thought that helmets should last a maximum of 3 years. But knowing Singapore, rain, shine, heat, cold within a few hours can indeed deteriorate a helmet progressively.

My $15 cash converter helmet is more than 3 years old.

Strangely, no loose parts, scratches or stenches despite seasonal rains...

WHY ARH??

You got use moisturizer on your helmet inner lining and polish it everyday ah? All my helmets must always tighten the screws every now and then, all that crap. All my D-rings all so rusty. Am i too SWEATY and OILY? Only thing is my helmets got no smell.

No... Strangely I don't bother to maintain my helmet. Just put outside in the sun after it's drenched in the rain. I don't do anything to the visors either, they're supposed to be Lexan anyway (riot shield material).

Before this one there was a KISS helmet that lasted for 4 years. Still perfectly usable when I got rid of it 'for new luck'. So there, I've owned a total of 2 helmets.

I think that's my problem. I take care of them too much. I should just throw it in the hot sun after i use it, hang it at the side of my bike or something.

Helmets usually would last between 2 to 3 years some even 4 years according to manufacturer if no impact have been absorb on it. Due to weather mixture like sunny and rainy that we have exposed the helmets to, 2 to 3 years is the ideal time to change. But should the helmet have taken a great impact say on accident or it drop hard like from a certain height, it has to be replaced for safety purposes.:thumb:

For hygiene wise, sometimes i will hang the helmet inner cushion in the sun after washing. Most of the time i will wear the helmet wif a buff or at least inner liner and so far my helmets dun have any foul odour even when perspiring..

i got my MHR helmet for $58 and used it since my start of 2B licence at 2009 jan so its 1 and half year and imma heavy sweater and imma rain lover so basically, my helmets D ring rusts, got odours, screen blurred, heavy scratches, back side padding de hard plastic starts cracking. i took care of it and these things still happens, i believe quality and brands plays an important role here. one helmet expensive doesnt mean its lasting and a cheap helmet doesnt mean its worthless too. anyway will be getting a new helmet soon

What helmet do you have in mind? I feel like getting a cheap full face. Getting sick of half-face.

I got my EvoII helmet since I start learning 2B, had it for around 10 months now.

3-4 month into learning, my helmet D rings already start to rust, then the mesh design at the back starts to rust also, and recently my visor suddenly become very scratched.

Oh...and my right side screw which holds the visor always come loose for unknown reason, left side screw is perfectly fine and tight. The cushions inside are still fine though.

Now I cycle through using my open face, full face and full face flip up...hope all don't spoil at same time. :o

If helmets have only 2-3 years lifespan, I wonder how people bear to buy helmets which costs few hundred dollars like Shoei. Like waste money.

Just get a few cheap helmets to abuse and throw, less heart pain. :cheeky:

Don't know is the offer still on or not...try trade in helmet get hjc ff for $100?

I think when they say that helmets have only 2-3 years of lifespan, they are referring to those arai or shoei helmets.

So cheeop ones like mfizz, lab, sumo all should last what, less than a year? Haha.

if want budget yet good air flow full face. get the ogk ff5...

try not to put helmet under direct sunlight when airing.. just open air will do... direct sunlight is never good for anything...

also.. regarding expensive helmet.. well.... to each to its own.. think about it, if u r gonna wear that helmet everyday, wouldn't you want something more comfortable, and more well constructed?

for open face, maybe the safety issues doesn't differs alot between cheap and expensive helmets (both unsafe).. but the comfort, and ventilation is very contrasting..

and for full face.. those branded one, went through many tests and innovations. and plus.. comfort and ventilation is even more important for a full face..

just my 2 cents...

Ya I agree...pay more for the construct, comfort and ventilation of FF helmets.

But cheaper helmet doesn't really mean it's weaker, as long as it's Dot or Snell approved (maybe at least a psb approved)...To me I think it already has a certain standard of safety to keep my mind at ease.

For branded ones, the price to pay can be able to buy a few cheaper ones, able to change new helmets often without heart pain also. But downside is need to bear with the weight and ventilation. I think that it's a sacrifice that is reasonable...I prefer to sweat then getting drenched! :cheeky:

Is it? The promotion is not part of GSS originally. Anyway, the original price should be $150. :o

been using my training helmet regularly for the past 2/3 yrs... lately found out that the helmet "float" when I ride.

What I worry is that the protection has deteriorate over the years, since I drop it occasionally.

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine
