Two months ago, i broke two bones near my wrist. I sought treatment at cgh a day after the swelling become real bad and the pain was intolerable. Doc dropped a bombshell on me that i had to be admitted immediately to prepare an emergency ops.

The road to recovery was not easy. After the operation, 3 weeks of pain and left hand immobility. Physio is a must since the muscle, tissue etc has to be reworked again.

Even though left hand still cannot carry heavy stuff, i am back to riding again. ^_^ Riding is part of me and i cant do without it. There is no way am i going to buy a car and drive, suffered economic disability for good 10 years just because my left hand is not fully recovered.

Most importantly, do not overly stress your injury during the healing period. If you feel pain on movement, do not try to exert it unless that movement had been recommended by a physiotherapist or someone who has received appropriate training.

I understand that you wish to get well faster but sometimes injuries heal faster if we take it slow.

After doing much research on the net, ive decided to ask fellow riders to ask about this.

Im sure, as riders, we all wud have had our fair share of falls and injuries.

Any of you had fractured your arms before after an accident? Be it a full fracture or just a hairline crack...How did you suffer the injury?

AND most importantly, how long did it take for you to ride/drive again?

My scenario is : Hairline crack on left arm. Cast for 2 weeks. Cast removed. Been 6weeks since then. I still cant straighten my arm fully. I tried to exercise myself...But its futile. And the doc said nothing abt gg for physio or anything..

Any idea how long it will take before i can fully stretch my arm and be able to touch the steering wheel/handlebar again? Or is there any exercises or medicine to help me straighten my arm?

Im going mad thinking about this. I just wanna drive/ride again. I wun be allowed to drive till i can straighten my arm fully... As for riding, im asked to forget abt it, for now. Parents will be parents. Well... I feel bad though for disappointing and worrying them wit my accident though..Its my passion for riding that made me g o against their words and make me ridE and not drive .

I was so passionate abt riding... i rode safely( to my best), was courteous to other road users... yet shyt happened to me...

Just wanna say, never take things for granted on the road...ride safely ppl...be alert at all times.... thats all i can say.... if given a choice... DRIVE.

I just feel nowadays d roads are too messy... very very very messy Too crowded at all times.. and too many inconsiderate drivers around.... and btw not all drivers are d same... when i drive or when my dad drives... we ALWAYS look out for riders & give way to them when can... esp my dad... coz my dad used to be a rider & me myself one...So dun think all drivers r out there to sweep riders off ok? There are good souls around too..

RIDE SAFE & drive safer guys & gals.

Do answer my ques & dun quote me

PLS DUN Give unconstructive comments coz it wun help me in anyway to recover.. thanks.

I just went for a pre IPPT check up.......partial screening only.

But the doctor grabbed for my hands, compared them and tell me the bones from my right wrist are crooked....so unfit for IPPT.

For fractures. You need to let it heal naturally. ie...let the bones knit back together properly.

And for it to do so. It needs to have blood transporting the necessary ingredients to that spot.

If you smoke. Stop. Smoking constricts your blood vessels, thus not helping to transport the necessary nutrients to assit its knitting.

If you absolutely must smoke. Take more vitamin C with zinc, to help transport your calcium, iron and whichever to the fractures point.

Stop stressing your muscles and bones with unnecessary weight. My right wrist is now crooked and I still favour my right hand to carry heavy load, so I guess thats why now its growing crooked in revenge. Do regular exercise coupled with light weight training. Dont overdo it.

Besides Milk, there is also soya milk if you are lactose intolerant. But body loses calciums as it ages and its harder to replendish as the body gets more resistence to additional building when it thinks its reached it limit. As a guy, you probably wont be having too much bone loss then females. So anything to build up calcium, even with TCM is encouraged.

Also, your fractures might involved some muscle loss. You could start building back up, with uses of Glucasamine tablets and Joint creams with Glucasamine.

And keep some hot water jugs handy for odd cold days & maybe a small electric massager. I bought a cheapo wan from Oto (S$80max) that I uses to massages my muscles when they get too sore on rainy days. But then, I am older, so that might just be age catching up on me.

Hope you get better.

take calcium supplements if you can't stand drinking too much milk.

my hairline fracture took about 2 months to join back. about 6 weeks in a cast & splint. started exercising my elbow and wrist joint fairly early on, and was able to avoid some of the joint stiffness and muscular atrophy. almost 8 months post-fracture now, ligaments are still not 100%. and it will probably never be 100%.

sustained a fracture riding a bicycle. a stupid woman decided to come into my path at the last min, jammed brake and flew. was a good few hrs before i went to A&E cuz it was taking too long for pain to subside. the silly woman didn't even know she caused me a fracture. i was still taking my 2b license then, had to stop for 3 months before i got back to it.

How fast the fracture heals are based on many factors, mainly ur age, medical history, type of fracture, location of fracture.. Drinking milk will not help in the recovery process.. ( calcium should be optimised when young)

I think the worst fracture imo will be those open fracture, as chances of infection impeding recovery is high..

Looking at all the patients tt i have seen, i think the worst fracture / injury is to the head and cervical spine area.. Sometimes when i look at all the young patients in my ward, those from rta.. It can be quite sad.. So young, but lost all abilities to be self dependant.. When you see the weary, sad and lost looks of their parents and siblings.. Even after 5 years working in the hospital, i still do shed tears and feel their pain..

Ride safe all my fellow bikers.. Think of ur love ones..

I think its all subjective. Different people react differently.

I had 2 breaks in right wrist. Fell off the bike awkwardly and stuck my hand out, causing the break.

However when it happened I managed to lift the bike even though it was busted(I didnt know it then).

NUH took xrays said I needed an operation to get all the bones sorted out.

They put a cast on the right hand.

I was already riding on the same day, albeit somewhat painfully.

Had my operation a week later - they gave me a bottle opener and eight screws.

Now I have more titanium than my R1.

I only stayed off the bike on the day and day after my operation.

Now 2 years later it 95% sorted though heavy riding makes it ache like a *****.

Fb666y... Take care dude.. When grow older it will affect u.. When taking out the metal plate? Or urs leaving it there for 7years type then replace?

Im not sure about 7 years, but my window of opportunity was 1 year. Thereafter the bone will start to grow over the titanium.

However it'll finally be out when I'm cremated, and the lucky person sifting through my ashes will have a trick bottle opener.

It's not biggie.

In retrospect it probably wasn't a good idea to ride with a broken hand but the cast actually made it possible to ride.

I was luckier. My wrist broken, but was tugged back and though grown crooked, I get to skip IPPT. Thankfully, no metals in me. But it took me a while to be able to grip the brakes. More worse, when I have small hands to start with.

What.....and become a lightning rod in our thunderous lightning prone Singapore?

Lol! I guess the best is really to suit up properly, get proper protective equipment and ride safely.. And the rainy weather nowadays.. sigh.
