true. you can't control others but you can influence behaviours (hopefully!).

take the example of graphic warnings on cigarette packs. Does it deter you from smoking? No. Infact i'm smoking right now while typing this out. the central route to persuasion lies in making small subtle messages.

to everyone: take a minute or two and watch this video.

After reading most of the posts here, i felt guilty on my part. I been riding with crocs and shorts for most of the time unless i am working (that is safety shoes and cargo pants). Heck, i even wear our favorite grey army singlet.......

TBH, his nicks and abrasions are rather minor.

I usually wear my jacket when i go even nearby, but i'd scrap the long pants if im headed to the coffee shops. Shoes must be covered at all times. Only when raining maybe switch to crocs or slippers :)

Personally i feel this advert is misleading and placing emphasis at the wrong area.

Protective Gears is the last line of defence. The very first line of defence should be situational awareness, pre-empting/anticipation of what can happen based on traffic condition/nearby drivers' tendencies and planning an escape route for all contingencies.

I have seen fully geared riders going into situtations where they are making themselves vulnerable to mistakes of other vehicles. Is it safer than a rider who wears less gears but consciously avoids comitting him/herself into situations whereby there are no escape routes?

While I do agree that gears are good, as judgement errors inevitably will occur once in a while, overdoing it tends to induce a false sense of security that dampens a rider's alertness and danger sense. The full-geared rider who gets into accident will then thank the advert for brainwashing him/her into wearing full gears since he/she came out rather uninjured.

That, compared to the naked rider who gets freaked out more easily while pre-empting drivers trying to kill him/her in horrible ways and move safely out of the way even before the other vehicle can even start getting near him/her. Food for thoughts?

Next, the statement "They should wear helmets certified by Singapore's TUV SUD PSB testing board. Helmets cut chances of dying by 37%" is simply propaganda. They are juxtapositioning an unrelated statistic in attempt to validate their own crappy test standards.

I would rather wear a high quality DOT/ECE or even JIS helmet that has not been tested by PSB, rather than some worthless PSB stickered crap. Look at the quality some of those ridiculous helmets which are "approved" by PSB. Isn't that helmet that splitted open like a melon when the rider needed it most proudly bearing the PSB sticker?

My two cents.

Why not wear full gears and practice safe riding? You can be the best rider but other road users may not be as angelic.

Besides, I've rarely seen anybody donning full gear and ride in Singapore. Those that do, seems to me that they are pretty safe on the road. Other than that, I've seen too many "naked" riders putting themselves in harm's way all too often.

Saw an R1 gotten into accident due to the fact that he was speeding along a bend and slipped. He was wearing t-shirt, shorts and slippers, luckily he wasn't hurt that badly, though quite a number of areas on his body was bleeding but the bike was badly damaged.

I'm a Tutor! Proud to be one!

It was mentioned in this thread that armour is the last line of defence. IT IS BUT.. necessary. We can ride defensively and should, but accidents do occur, sometimes through no fault of ours. What then? Leave it to fate. It's a personal choice, but armour can be the difference between walking unscathed and spending half a year in a WHEELCHAIR. ...I say this because I WAS I A WHEELCHAIR for half a year, when a driver banged into me from the side and i broke my leg at the knee joint. It was a slow and light impact, and yet I was broken.

If I had worn my armour that day, the stiff part (the knee cap protector) would have prevented that bone breaking.

With my armour, I have tested "Fake crashes" by throwing myself off purposely and I can say that it does help protect. Just ask the superbike track racers, they crash and slide out so often, and can even scrape their knee armour on the floor.. and they can walk away because of their armour.

Of course, no armour can protect 100%.

To be practical, i still don't wear armour all the time because as bros listed - weather is hot, and no place to store armour. But I wear it as often as I can. During those times I do not, i still make it a point to wear long pants, riding gloves, protective shoes.

Armour or leather riding clothings can also prevent abrasion. When I was in the critical ward, one other rider was admitted to my ward. He didn't break any bone, but all his exposed skin was scraped off leaving only raw flesh underneath. Why? because he didn't wear protective top and pants. He screamed every night and day.. for the first 2 nights. He was hurting. For me? well, i was on morphine drip.

so bros, its your choice, but consider carefully. its not compulsory, but understand the risk. And for those of you who pillion girlfriend/wife, please advise them too not to wear hot shorts, and sandals, and sphagetti straps. Those beautiful skin can all go to "decorate" the tar roads when u crash or slide.

Upz for u..... I guess its the mentality... Most people usually only realise after they had an accident.... But still the weather and storage really plays a big part in discouraging us to wear....
