You can have the big bike of your choice (leisure) and whichever bike (practical) for daily usage. Key point is that the practical daily use bike must suit our traffic conditions and your requirements. Depending on your travelling patterns and distance you cover daily, you may or may not have savings when owning two bikes.

If you travel a lot in Singapore during daily usage, the savings from fuel and wear and tear on a more practical bike compared to a big bike may be quite significant.

I have a 1000cc bike (usually used for weekends / touring) which consumes fuel at 15KM/Litre, a maxi scooter which consumes at 30KM/L and a kup which consumes at 45KM/L. I do approximately 500-700km a week locally which works out to be quite a fair bit of savings when it comes to wear and tear.

TS, what bike are u riding and what's your mileage like per week?

Currently im riding cbr6. Mileage per week differs, but on average around 1,000km per month. With current consumption of 18km/l, monthly petrol would be around $130 (mixture of v-power and 98).

Im guessing 1000km of mileage per month is pretty average and short distance for some. But if i can get a bike with 45km/l, my monthly petrol would be around $40-45. I woud be saving $85 per month (can pay 6months road tax for my cbr6), $1020 per year (insurance for cbr6 as well). Sounds attractive. Okay, i shall calculate the total amount for insurance, road tax per year, parking per year, maintenance. Cashcard and parking coupon would be the same as i'll only be riding one bike at one time. Anything more to add?

my 2 cents personal opinion & which i am ready to be "flamed" by others ( i dun really care as i am too lazy to "fight" all my flamers back )

1) it is only my own personal theory that :-

1 engine is best for daily transport ( more economical ). 2 ( twins ) engines are for touring ( comfortable ). 4 engines are best for the track ( less problems AFTER the track session i hear from old-timers ). i have excluded scramblers as i know nothing about them & i believe ( i may be wrong ) that scramblers are specialized bikes for guys that like to do "off-road".

2) in the ideal world ( if you are rich enough ), you can buy as many bikes as you like. 1 bike that is best suited for each different purpose. if you belong to that category, you will probably do not even need to consider the costs involved. however if you need to consider the costs...

3) i doubt the savings in petrol & maintaining COSTS are that much to "save" by owning more than 1 bike UNLESS the 2nd bike costs NOTHING to BUY ( eg. FREE GIFT ) & next to nothing to MAINTAIN ( eg. wave ). why don't just seek a "compromise" & buy a bike that is best suited for MOST of your needs. More bikes = more $$ ( you already know that i can see ) & more hassle ( you can always keep "mistress" but why go through the costs & trouble? )

it will be more economic in the long run to buy a "middle" bike that is suitable for MOST of your needs even if it is not the best suited in each category.

eg. you can buy a 400cc ~ 650cc tourer that is ok in daily use, ok for the rare touring ( unless you can afford the time to "tour" every week / month ), ok for the even rarer occasional track session. it should be cheaper than buying a 1L sportsbike + 1 cub / scooter.

if you are a real track speed demon that NEED to go to the track like your "religion", get a big sports-bike & heck-care just bear the high daily running costs. Track sessions are not cheap anyway ( petrol, tyres, brakes, fees, gear & TIME etc etc )

if you seldom go to the track or go "touring" less than 1 times a year. Just get a cheap & good 2b bike. i read in a local motorcycle magazine that a malaysian couple toured all the way to China on a Versys ( twin engine ) & FZ-150i !

the lady toured on a small 2b bike! i concede that the bike may not exactly be ideal but she proved that it can be done. It may be "uncomfortable" but i suppose it should be ok to be "uncomfortable" once in a while if you only do touring like once every 3 years?

edit: in the same issue, there was 1 guy that tried to "tour" all the way to london on a cub! i believed he made it ( i did not finish reading )

i assume you don't belong to the "i dun give a hoot about touring & track, i don't mind being slow i just want a cheap commuter cub / scooter / 2b bike" type of rider.

anyway it is your money not mine. :cheeky:

just do it.if u feel like own 2 bikes.then go ahead.I know a frd have 3 bikes and one car.each has it Own persective.as long as you can afford.once you feel uncomfortable, just sell the other off.I feel one bike is enough as u got one butt.u can only ride one bike.however, sometimes, people crave for 2 or 3 bikes under their ownership. well, just do whatever you are happy.we can calculate the maths or advise to you.what matter most is these what you want.

I concur with Bukit Merah.

Depends on what u wan to achieve.

Bike collections? To a enthusiastic bike collector, never enough

Significant savings by using 2 bikes? I don't feel so. Depreciation, parking charges for 2 bikes, Road tax, insurance, inspection, other maintenance for 2 bikes will eat into your savings on petrol unless u clocked several thousand km monthly, and perhaps u might even cough out more $.

Just my 2 cents worth.

THere is not right or wrong, bradder! Everyone is different - just like every bike is different. Just do what you like and makes most sense to you. Many guys have more that 3 bikes + car/s, some even have 8 bikes ++, but everyone is happy...so no one can advise you on your situation because only you know best. We only have one life, lets live it!

I sure there is a handful (or 2 handfuls) of us here who owns 2 or more bike. I just wana find out:

1) Is it hard to maintain more than 1 bike?

2) Any advice on getting the "most" suitable bikes to own? (ie: both class 2 or one class 2B, one class 2 etc)

3) After having 2 bikes, do you think its still practical or you would advise people to just stick with one?

I am thinking of getting 2 bikes myself in the future. A definite one would be a class 2sports bike but the other one I am not too sure. Should I get another 600cc for transport and work or just get a 2B bike for the same purpose?

OR

Should I just get one bike and use it all the way? :pity:

everything boils down to time and money

Come to think of this. Keeping 2 bikes might be a sensible option where one is for transport and the other for touring and overseas trip. If there is a red plate option for bikes, think more bros here will have "second wife" liao haha
