Hi all

Facing the following problem with my 99' carb model BB. Throttle response is very weak, need to rev up to rpm3 then can only change gear. normally even at high gear still can pick up after throttling. now if at 3rd gear, loud cranking noise at the gear box, sounds like the engine's gonna die. furthermore, very strong petrol smell when riding, after checking, the smell comes from the exhaust.

sent my bike to service and mech sugges cleaning of carb, it was found out as well that the cam cover gasket is harden and oil is overflow and wet the plugs. changed gasket, service carb and air filter.. changed plugs.. took bike back and tried riding and still the same..

any brothers out there have any solutions??? care to share?

I'll take a shot at "helping." Usual disclaimers apply.

Let's look at the facts.

- carb model BB

- Throttle response is very weak

NOTE: (not enough fuel in some cylinder? Possibly. Could also be due to plugs not firing in certain cylinders or poor compression.)

- need to rev up to rpm3 then can only change gear

QUESTION: What do you mean exactly by can only change gear at 3000rpm? What happens if you try to change gear below that?

- normally even at high gear still can pick up after throttling. now if at 3rd gear, loud cranking noise at the gear box, sounds like the engine's gonna die.

QUESTION: Does this only happen at 3rd gear, or all the gears? How did you determine the sound was coming from the gear box and not from the engine?

furthermore, very strong petrol smell when riding,

NOTE: This is a strong suggestion that one of the spark plugs are not firing, so the petrol remains unburnt and gets forced out the pipes.

Troubleshoot by turning your fuel petcock to off, letting the bike idle till all the petrol is burnt off and the bike dies, then removing your plugs one at a time from the cylinder, fix back the plug wires and touch the plug electrode to your cylinder head to ground it.

Hit the starter button and see if there's a spark across the plug. If there is, screw it back and remove the next one and test similarly.

If the plug does not fire, it could be several things. Easiest thing to check is the plug itself. Switch the suspected bad plug with another from the other cylinder and test again. If the plug again doesn't fire, it could be the plug wire, or the coil itself. Not sure how easy it is to swap plug wires, if it can be done you can easily check it.

- after checking, the smell comes from the exhaust.

NOTE: Seems to indicate one of the plugs are not firing. Petrol is being sucked into the cylinder, it doesn't get ignited, it's then forced out the exhaust by the piston's compression.

Do this. Remove the lower cowl of the fairing, then start the bike up, let it get to operating temperature, about 70-80 deg. Wrap a paper towel around a wooden chopstick, tie with rubber band, and dip the towel into some water. Use the towel to touch each exhaust header one by one, is one of them not hot?

If you have an infrared themometer, you can check the pipe headers to see if there's a significant difference in temperatures.

If it is indeed found that one of the plugs were not firing, and you've been riding the bike for some time like this, I recommend you change your oil. The petrol could have seeped into the oil via the piston rings and contaminated it.

- sent my bike to service and mech sugges cleaning of carb

NOTE: Carb shouldn't be the problem because you could smell petrol in the pipes. Unless of course there were multiple problems (one plug not firing, another jet is stuck), but this should be done after the plug problem has been checked.

- it was found out as well that the cam cover gasket is harden and oil is overflow and wet the plugs.

NOTE: Could very well be one of the causes of your plugs dying. Did you take a look at how they looked like when they were removed, the plugs I mean?

- changed gasket, service carb and air filter.. changed plugs.. took bike back and tried riding and still the same..

You can either bring it back to the same shop (who should have verified the problem no longer exists before letting you leave anyway) or bring it to a competent mechanic who really knows birds.

Anyone going to service their bike soon perhaps next month end can consider this: will service my BB end Jun and will purchase a new K & N air filter and then will off load my USED air filter only for $25. If keen can PM me your intention and contact to secure the filter. Ist one on the PM list takes it. Filter is still in good working condition only that i want to buy a new one. Cheers!

wow! let me just try to digest and understand.. guess i would need to bring it back to the shop again.. with regards to the 3rd gear thingy, i don really know how to describe.. its just like no power if rpm doesnt raches 3, the engine sounded like dying and loud noices surfaces due to lack of petrol flow.. not sure weather the sound came from e gearbox.. anyway, thanks for the advice..

Cheers!

Bro, I oso got this kind of problem. >> "Throttle response is very weak, need to rev up to rpm3 then can only change gear." Sometime the petrol like want to go in, dun want to go in. A fren told me to find mech name Ah Lai at Ubi De Xing repair shop. I intend to go there soon to do the setting coz my bike consumption is really quite high. Normally, carb model can reach bout 260-280 km b4 the light pop-up but mine oni bout 200-210 km light on oredi. Usually I don't speed (abit scared on s'pore road lah, ride bout 100km/h) but still milage cannot get more than 220 km for full tank. I understand there's another mech at ubi oso. Shop name KnT, owner is clifford. Mayb you can check with him oso.

Hi bro,

Sorry I missed your message, after the forum migrate to new format all my thread subscriptions screwed up. :cheeky:

Congrats on the buy, must meet up for kopi to admire your bike!

BTW, can I find out for those riding EFI bikes, how many clicks can you go before your fuel gauge starts blinking the last bar? After it blinks how many clicks will it go until totally empty? Thanks!

Hi bro, for me its 270km and the last bar starts to blink and i suppose there is still about 6 to 7 litres left in the tank. On average it's about 15.5km/litre of petrol.

Upon blinking, normally will visit kiosk for refueling and its 17.5 to 18 litres of petrol fully pump with centre stand..

Hi all, i refer to my previous post regarding the front fender extender. Any kind souls here knows where to get it done. I feel that its a more worthy investment rather than a radiator guard?
