Hi i'm new here wassup gentlemen and ladies perhaps.

2. should i change job now or wait until finish advance. now working in avaiton industry as engineer.

3. can school hop anot?

Thanks.

Personally, I would seperate the questions into 2 categories.

1a. Go for BCA if you are going to Construction industries only and/or using ACWSH (Advance Cert in WSH) as a stepping stone to jump into SDWSH (Specialist Dip in WSH).

1b. If you want to learn more (not necessary better lecturers/knowledge gained), SP/NP would be a better choice as they have more core modules and elective modules (total 11 modules for SP). You will not only be learning WSH knowledge but also certain ESS modules like "Communication and Relationship Management" and "Workplace Safety & Health (Supervisory level). Not sure about NP, as I'm speaking as a graduate from SP ACWSH - 1st Intake.

2a. Changing job into "Safety industry" certainly isn't easy, especially without lobangs. Most places are looking for "xx years experience in xx industry..", "need to know this.. done that..". It took me 8 months of non-stop sending resume and step in initially without any known lobangs.

IF you have the passion and willing to chiong, by all means. But remember, you're starting from the bottom again. Salary may not be what you're getting now and be prepared to bao suar bao hai.

2b. Start getting involved in your current job's WSH aspects. Talk to Safety department personnel, see what kind of work they are doing, if possible get yourself into WSH Committee. Once you've some form of WSH involvement (with evidence aka black & white), you can always put it into your resume. Would be useful in future job hunt.

WSH Co-ordinators are more sought after, especially now because there's no legislation stating that BCSS/BISH/etc cert holders cannot be WSH Supervisors. Such certs are cheaper, faster and easier to obtain. Holders (usually FT in certain industries) are so much cheaper to employ.

3. Yes. Can hop anywhere you like. (Just a side note on benefits.. SP provides light buffet dinner for students in ACWSH/SDWSH.. not sure about others.. just prepare some packet sugar cause usually not enough for my class..)

Hope I've given you some ideas to make up your own decision.

Just remember, Safety passion comes from the heart. There are many WSH personnel out there whereby safety comes only from their mouth. Ask your heart if you're ready to be entrusted with the lives of many others.. by educating, enforcing and ensuring they are safe at work.

Hi kudos to WarForGe for ur indepth reply.

Not really interested in the contruction line juz using the cert as stepping stone to further studies. Wanted to complete the full course as fast as possible.

Well more knowledge is definitely better but have to wait for SP or NP intake (dunno when) so in abit of dilemma here.

Well lobangs for jobs can find u all mah haha (joking) currently job scope also bao suar bao hai so should b ok with me, pay wise my company only pay peanuts so should b ok also.

Now in my company's safety committee so the black and white is settled.

Outing with u guys quite difficult coz this few months work schedule packed so sorry can't.

Think I have passion abt safety aspect coz its very sad to see a fellow worker suffer injuries or death at the workplace.

Regards.

great to have this forum to cater the safety professionals and those who are interested to join the world of safety.

just want to ask/know what are the procedures/process to register as safety officer in MOM? what are likely the requirements to be a registered safety officer in MOM? are they going to conduct interview or just submit all the requirements?

Hi all Safety personnel..

I am currently working in aviation industry not as technician but as store personnel..I'm looking forward to take up safety courses but I'm not sure where to start..no experience & not related safety qualification at all..what attracts me is of course the 'salary' & to remind fellow workers in any field or any industry that safety comes 1st..bcos infront of my eyes my previous colleague accidentally knocked down my other colleague by forklift and he died..i was so shocked..we all have been brief abt safety for driving forklift but yet there's still accidents..so I personnally need advises from forumers that what is the head start to take up safety courses..I don't think I'm qualified for diploma..but need a stepping stone(a cert for safety supervisors course) will do..and how can i apply for the job?

With agency or with frens? cos my frens abit stingy for this lobang...btw interested in Petrolchemical industry..

Pls help..thanks..

Still the same words for those new for safety. Do not join the safety line unless you got a lot of experience on it. Many of my friends think safety can fetch higher. Come in for 1week automatic he leave the job :sian:

If I am not wrong, the Fire Safety Course will qualify one as a FIRE SAFETY MANAGER (e.g. a FSM in charge of the fire safety of a shopping mall, a building, etc...), not a Fireman or a Fire fighter in the SCDF.

If one wishes to be a regular fireman or a Fire fighter in the SCDF, I think he or she may have to go through and pass the "Fire-fighting" course.

Anyone please correct me if I am wrong. :)

That depends on what you're looking at..

Basically, for SCDF Fire Fighters (you were once a NSF Fire Fighter) requires to go through BFFC (Basic Fire Fighter Course, during my time it's this name but I think they renamed it to FSR..) which I believe you've gone through to qualify as a NSF Fire Fighter. Unfortunately, you did not sign on as a regular during your duration with SCDF.. you may need to check with SCDF on directions..

Pre-Requisites

Singaporean or Permanent Resident of Singapore.

5 GCE 'O' level credits, GCE 'A' level, ITC/CBS or Polytechnic Diploma holder.

Does not suffer from colour blindness and not more than 500 degrees of myopia per eye.

Physically fit. Male applicants must be PES A or B.

Minimum height is 1.6 m for male and female applicants.

Minimum weight is 50 kg for male and female applicants.

Minimum pass standard for NAPFA or IPPT

If you're looking into "private" practice.. there are a few "private" practice for fire fighting.. you can try contacting them for directions..

1. Airport fire service (I don't know what is their actual name) AES Fire Safety & Standards Unit (FSSU): 6541 2535

2. ERT (Emergency Response Team) for petrolchem companies? Some bros in petrolchem might wanna advise on this..

3. Shipyards - most of the shipyard safety personnels in my class are ex-SCDF Fire Fighters..

Fire safety and EHS/SHE/HSE/OHS/WSH "safety" are 2 different things.. although usually performed by the same department (because they both cross reference to each other) and/or same personnel.

For occupational safety, there's currently a few main industries..

I'll take a wild guess you have no GCE 'O' levels (as you mentioned low education) and suggest that you go for WPLN ( http://wsq.wda.gov.sg/GenericSkills/CES/WPLN/ ) which you can take the computerised test at Redhill.

Once you get the pre-req for Certificate in WSH, take the cert and start moving forward from there.. there's tons of WSH courses (e.g. Risk Management course, WSH Management course, BCSS, BISH, etc etc) to be taken so get ready to spend quite abit on education..

Long post again.. xD
