Yeah nibosh is a very good cert but i heard its not recognised locally, only overseas? Does FSM necessary for SO cert? if so, how much and how long the duration for FSM? thanx.

no need FSM, better go for ECO, coz SOTC dun covers environmental. FSM comes later priority.

Nibosh is recognised locally by european MNC. It covers environmental.

Cost is RM2900 for 2 full day class on sat & sun in pasir gudang jb. Exam is 2 months later. Anyone interested can join me, i riding my bike there for classes.

Another course you all may be interested in taking is Specialist Diploma in Environment and Water Technology from Temasek Polytechnic. With Govt's subsidy about $1600.

Care to share more about the NIBOSH course. Thanks.

this specialist dip is probably 1 yr course & for ppl who wish to work in reverse osmosis plant or waste water treatment plants etc.

ECO is only 1 week course & teach about laws & codes of practise regarding environmental protection, emissions & radiation protection act etc.

Its easier to find a job with a specialist dip in WSH (safety officer) than the above.

Nebosh course is for SO who already graduated & wish to work oversea or locally with MNC. sorry my mistake, Nebosh dun seem to cover environmental , after looking thru their website.

Thanks for the link :p

With the Specialist Diploma in Environment and Water Technology alone cannot get you a RSO job. It is more of a complementary to our existing RSO certificate especially if you are looking for a safety job that includes environment. With many companies ISO14001 certified, they prefer candidates that have some environment knowledge and experience. This also opens your choice for job in the market.

just ended my Neobosh IGC yesterday (only 2 days course) , and now hv to wait 2 months for exam. There is no calculations for Nebosh, but course material is 50% thickness of SOTC course material. Really got to study. The lecturer is fantastic, he is a also a trained psychologist & taught us to use mind maps & acronymn techniques to study & how to be exam smart. He gave us 87 model questions as homework & the model answer will come later.

He told us many SO including my ex-colleague who do not hv a degree has become safety mgr because of this Nebosh.

He is also a manpower supplier to oil rigs & dubai & Qatar. I also get to know other classmates who actually worked in oil rigs earning a couple of hundreds per day. He also say those SO who work in shipyards are more qualified to work in such oil/gas rigs or platforms, than compared to me who come from oil/gas industries.

those who wants to work in such jobs must go study some courses in http://www.opito.com.

make sure u register yourself in advance & pay deposit. Otherwise when they advertise today, tomorrow class will be full again. Its the same for ECO course. You must insist that they take yr deposit or something.

Previously when i ask my company to register for me, they delayed & i missed the batch. Got to wait another half year. So i apply myself & my HR scolded me becoz the company policy dun allow self applying.

Dear guys,

I chanced upon this forum and this particular thread while searching for EOHS stuffs. I regret to say that I do not own a bike, and I hope this does not diminish the amount of advice and help given. hehe. I have read the whole thread, and I wish to comment that it had certainly heartening to find fellow forumers of similar occupation helping out one another.

First, I would say I'm a 20+yrs guy working in a engineering company with committee member in the company's EOHS dept for

Coming from a engineering discipline (diploma), I had lost interests in it and am keen to further develop my career in EOHS. I am aware that one needs to accumulate certain years of relevant experience in this safety line before being eligible for a Specialist Diploma and subsequently being a RSO. Personally, I feel I am a person who is sensitive to changes in the environment and one who had an eye for details, which i feel are also impt qualities of a safety personnel

Taking my own initiative, I would be proceeding to pursue a Advance Certificate in WSH, while still gaining experience as a committee member. However that will still not be enough experience garnered.

Hence I hope to get some advice on:

1) Is there any company willing to hire someone 'fresh' for a similar WSH role, in order for me to gain more experience?

2) Is my current plan by taking the advance cert a correct route?

3) Another other suggestions on furthering my career in WSH?

Being a new bird in this area, i hope i had not make a fool of myself in this first post, as I do not have anyone to discuss with.

Also, if any fellow friends here is willing to take me under your wing in your company, I would certainly welcome you to send me a PM.

Thanks in advance!! =)

my advice is stick to yr same job, volunteer more in yr safety committee, but do make yr safety department ppl committed to write you a testimonial letter of what you have volunteered every year.

At the same time sign up for the specialist dip in wsha. The minute u graduated 6 months later, u would hv acquired almost 2 yrs of safety experience - enough for MOM to register u as a Registered qualified WSHO.

The job market for WSHO is said to boom even more next year for construction & hotel industries especially. Pay in construction for 3 yrs experience can hit 5k, 5 yr experience can hit 7k max. If go oversea dubai & Qatar, even higher.

btw, enrolling in ngee poly wsho dip course is easier if yr company applies for u.

while attending a ECO course at NEA building, and net working with other safety officer, I was told by a fellow class mate who works as a civil engineer but also moon light as a part time WSHO in one of those small factory in Tuas area. He got paid 2K for each of the locations he handled. He always visit them during lunch time or evening or weekend, coz the factory are 24hrs shift.

I also heard of some SO working 3 or 4 part time sites & no full time job.

Any SO wish to comment, is 2k reasonable or too little? I seriously thinking of signing up.
