Hi everyone, i'm a rider without much rider, but i face the following problem, would like to ask those with experience to give me some tip/s in handling the situation.

U guys know that some expressway's exit are those bending roads (some example. SLE towards BKE exit woodlands ave 2, BKE to PIE jurong) while negotiating the bend, i realized that for the SLE woodlands ave2 exit, there is a strip of metal (i suppose is the connector for different part of the road).

during dry condition, is alright. but the thing is i rode over about 3 times on a wet condition, out of which twice i felt the skid of the front wheel it's a really scary feeling, the rear wheel has no issue though. the front wheel immediately gets back the grip once it hits the tarmac. 1st time i was alone, engine braking to 40+km/hr when i reach that spot, 2nd time i was with a pillion, slight throttling to maintain grip at around 40km/h also...

Question is, is there any way/s to eliminate this altogether, apart from riding slowly? (i think i'm already riding very slowly when i'm experiencing this.

i dun wan to injured me or worst my pillion with a lousy technique, thus, help me out fellow riders.

sorry for the wall of texts, i think best to elaborate as much as i can so u ppl have a better picture.

thanks in advance~

I have taken wdlnds ave 2 exit many time during the rain. But don't remember tyres losing any grip. What tyres are you using and what bike are you riding?

Same here. Don't really felt the tyres losing grip, except one time where my tyres are totally worn out.

ermm it's the metal strip part that makes me feel the loss of grip.

Metal strips + rainy day make very bad friction.I think the only advise I can do is, slow down, grip your tank with your thighs firmly (not too tight), keep the bike straight, and put some weight to the front end....

meaning to say i'm doing the best i can other than stopping and tip-toeing across hahaha... okay, thanks alot ppls =)

Safest is carry the bike on your shoulder and walk across the metal strip.... lol....

Hi Guiderer,

1. Check your tyre. Do not use worn tyres. If the tyre is more worn out, especially the grooves, the rider will feel less grip and less confident.

2. Avoid braking over the wet metal. The more you brake over the metal strip, the more the tyre will slide and rider will feel the loss of grip.

Better to just brake before the metal on normal tarmac, and just roll over the metal strip. If you roll over the metal strip, you should not feel much unless you are leaning over heavily.

well @Jehuty, i dunno how else to term it, maybe u can educate me on that. when your tire comes into contact with the metal, it shifted from it's original line of travel (banking left, tire shifts to the right) how to term the changes? i have limited vocab, pls kindly advise, so i may give better description in the future?

that is a great suggestion! carry on shoulder and walk across...

the explaination will be, this incredible hulk (bike is daelim roadwinR, dry weight iirc is 168kg) is afraid of abrasion with the tarmac, so he chose to do it in the safest way possible.

Don't forget paint markings. Those crap can cause you to slip.

being using that exit for close to a year daily with no problem. as other suggest, go slower and get a better tyres. tyres will make a big different on your riding experience.

i am riding spark135. with the stock tyres, it skipped quite a number of times without accident and i didn't take the matters seriously. only after 2accidents in wet condtion did i decide to change to Dunlop TT900. i think that was a stupid thing to do learning from the hard way. so far no problem after switching to better tyres. it have been 10months since the change and the tyres begin to wear. this time i won't bother to save some money and risk an accident.

ride safe bro.

ya, precisely because i dun wanna learn it the hard way, thus asking for advise from you guys =)

originally i tot was to throttle, budden thinking that will shift weight to the rear causing front to be lighter.. so i asks...

i will go slow go straighter, dun brake on it...

eh another suggestion to keep TS go crazy....

erm....try going over the metal strip with ur bike perpendicular to the road surface( as if ur riding straight), which means u might need to alter ur cornering line abit maybe by turning in early, then pull ur bike to go across the strip straight then lean in again...haha...just another crazy suggestion la...late already, brain not working...

Ride fast..ride safe..don't crash...

Try to go as much as possible in a perpendicular angel (90 degrees) to the strip. I know it's not possible to 'swee swee' 90 degrees one lah, but the more perpendicular, the less time the tire is in contact with the metal strip, ie less chance to skid.

Motorcyclist are the nicest people on the road, try not to kill us.

actually not a crazy suggestion la... nowadays i've been trying to do that, as _|_ as possible (not finger pointing, just showing road-bike-road) hahaha... that is whenever i spot something that is potentially slippery, of course i do look all over the place to check whether there are any vehicles nearby that are potential hazards whenever i did it.

thanks fellow riders for the tips given =)

But yet, this is a good suggestion.

Try to alter your line to keep your bike as upright as possible when going over those metal strips. Well... taking into account surrounding traffic too of course.

Also, best to keep a neutral throttle, or coast over those strips.

After almost falling at such strips at Tuas checkpoint when it was raining (they have very wide strips) , the only thing i tell myself is not to lean or turn the handlebar i.e keep the bike as straight as possible.. my bike has a 21" front so thin tyres also tend to be much more at risk..
