Hi all, I am planning on buying bike soon but wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on bike security. Has anyone had a gps tracker fitted to their bike ? Any recommendations of models and where to get it fitted ?

Also, any other advice on securing your bike in Singapore would be helpful. I am from the UK so crime is on a much bigger scale and I have noticed that a lot of parked bikes in Singapore don't have any security device so is it a huge consideration ? Thanks in advance.

So far in Singapore GPS tracker is expensive and not a common thing to add on the bike ( low crime rate but not means no crime). It is relatively safe to park your bike anywhere in Singapore. If you are really not comfortable you can purchase and use the disc lock and bike cover. This should be enough for Singapore use. (Malaysia is another story thou).

There are multiple security devices for bike.. I have used the bike alarm, disc brake lock, integrated disc brake to fork lock and good old chain..

Bike alarm- u will need to keep check on ur battery frequently..

Disc brake and intrgrated ones- u will need to make sure u do no forget about them. Once i was in a hurry, *bam* i dented my disc brake.

I am now using the trottle lock, with a bike cover.. It look something like this

http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/motorcycle-lock/grip-lock/

Serving me well.. :)

Ouh.. And gps tracker, if not wrong u will need battery supply right? If ur battery is disconnected, it wont work? I'm not sure bout this though..

The best is dont park at dark or dodgy places, avoid funky places and utilise bike cover.. Get those inconspicous kind and yup.. Hope all is well!

Thanks for the quick replies. A quick search didn't bring up a great deal on GPS trackers so it seems they are not as common here. I think I will go with the multiple lock approach such as the throttle and disc locks.

Whilst on the subject of security, how do you deal with your bike helmets ? Is there a way to lock them to your bike or do you just carry them with you ? I have an arai helmet and was told to never leave it unattended but the idea of having to carry it all the time is a hassle. Of course I will if there is no safe way to protect it !

As per all the advises that was given to you..

Alarm, + cover is sufficient..

If you are as paranoid as me.. add on a disc-lock to ensure safely..

As for GPS tracker, it will cost you $19.90 with a upfront payment of estimated $400.. I would only suggest it if you are getting a 1000cc bike or you stay around woodland area where high rates of crimes happened.. and because the amount is abit too steep to maintain as well..

Kindly read thru at least the intro section first before decide to post any comments.... thanks...

Puig has a bar end helmet lock.. But if someone really wish to steal the helmet, they would.. Arguably, the best place to leave ur helmet behind is if u have a box.. But if u dont have one, find our fellow forumer named bluekiss and buy his helmet bag.. Or if ur okay with bagpack, there is plenty of bagpack with in built helmet carrier like cyclone from bagster, ogio no drag or less drag, or alpinestars bag...

Just dun forget bout ur disc lock k.. Oh ya.. Mustafa centre do sell some good ones.. Disc break with alarm.. :)

Hi Bro, not meant to be rude. The grip lock has its flaws. Wanted to get it years ago, then I saw reviews on other forums. And its quite easy to 'wheel' the bike away with it. I will not go in detail later someone see this post and try it out.

As for bike security, I guess Bro EthanDaniel has cover everything.

For GPS tracker, there is a company selling it in Singapore name is you won't believe this.... "007"

Got my unit from one of it's sales person named "Trader" on Ebay.

It's a small pager like device that uses a SIM card to SMS you it coordinates when you call the number on the SIM card. Runs on a cellphone battery.

I have used it when on a trip to K.L, with it hidden under the bike's seat. Works perfectly, but you got to make sure that the SIM card can support overseas calls if going overseas.

Don't forget to remove to remove your cash card when you leave your bike. It's the most vulnerable "part" of your bike, especially when you are new to riding in Singapore.

Happened to me way too often when I got my first bike after my 2B licence :(

i think the best ways is to get a good insurance or an old bike if your main usage is only commuting.

locks, alarm etc only keep honest people honest. at most joy rider will be deter by those measure. thankfully spore is relatively safe. it not uncommon to spot bike even without locking their handle bar. that might be a culture shock to you:faint:

Hodaka Motoworld has a GPS tracker-styled alarm. It's the Scorpio alarm. Has an app on iPhone that allows to track where your bike is even while on the move. Shows your max speed or average speed and even the route you have taken. Of course it's also expensive. Around $700 if I can remember and an annual payment to the company for the GPS tracking

01/04/2010 == pass 2B TP (2nd try)

10/04/2010 - ? == Yamaha FZ150i

dont waste money buying the "Xxxa" brand disc alram. worked for 2 mths only. After 1 drop, the alarm goes non stop till I removed the battery but once it's in place it sound non stop again.

Bike alarm will drained the batt charge alot?

Bro.. Not really.. If u on and ride ur bike daily, it will not be much of a problem.. But if u try to leave ur bike hibernating for a week, lets just hope ur bike is not tt heavy to push start...

I ordered online a GPS tracker, but totally confused on how to setup the item. They gave the instructions, as below, and I am totally confused,

1、 set the APN

Send: # 802 # APN # username # logon password # device password # # (device initial password is 0000)

Such as : Belgium: # 802 # web.pro.be # mobistar # mobistar # 0000 # #

2、Alarm number binding

To send a text message (# 711 # alarm number # equipment password # 1 # #), each device can set up 9 number, from 1-9 order set phone binding number (equipment initial password for 0000) For example:

#711#123456789#0000#1##

#711#987654321#0000#2##

3、SMS for equipment position

Use The main number to send 6660000 to the device ,it will return the device current location information and Google map links.

Use The main number to send 8880000 to the device ,it will return the current geographical Google map link

How to even setup this?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
