BTW, I am really surprised YBR FC is 37Km/ltr. Considering it is much lighter and less powerful than Pulsar I would expect it to give atleast 60 km/ltr
ARe there normal bikes tat does 60km/ltr?? Didn't come across any in my readings....maybe I didn't read enough.

Also, reliability issues with pulsar is a myth. Come to pulsar thread and see how many pages people have dedicated to it, the fact that you are in the forum means you know your bike well. If thats the case you wont have any issue with pulsar. The issues come only when people neglect the bike totally and dont even know whether the bike needs engine oil or not
Yeah, I know ...the thread is reeaaallll long:D. Used to follow the thread when Puslar 1st came out as i was impressed by reviews in India(mouthshut) but stop after a few mths. Maybe u can help to summarize the costs of keeping a Puslar in top running condition? Much appreciated as the Puslar thread too long to get a good grip of the costs and time to maintain the bike. Tks.

Another thing: Its true that second hand bikes can be problematic, but seriously, how bad can it be? You said you DIY stuff on your own which means you know stuff about bikes. When you test ride a bike you should be able to get a feel of how good or bad it is. Worst case how much a 2B 4 stroker will cost you to fix. Max to max even engine overhaul is like 1K. Is that such a big risk? I would say no. If I spend 1k the bike will be as good as new and still much cheaper than a brand new bike.
Well, if it's one time cost and time to put a 2nd hand bike back to as good as new condition, great. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't work out and we find ourselves going back to the workshop time and again. It can be due to poor skill of mechanic, or not all problems were caught or like some pple like to say, unlucky. For me, it's not just money, but also the frustration and inability to `trust' ur bike. Been there done tat...also seen friends face the same situation; he bought his bike from friend shop, which told him, bike low mileage, lay up for almost a year as owner was ban from riding by his father and bike only 2 yrs old. Bike start hving problems, white smoke, engine die easily, etc....he send to workshop time and again...and last resort, I recommend him to planet for overhaul. Still problem. Anyway, he sold the bike back to the shop at a loss and bought himself a new CBF150, which I recommended, base on his riding style and he ahs been happy since then:).

Maybe he's unlucky...but tat doesnt' mean I've rule out 2nd hand bikes.....just not top of my list. Fyi, I've been riding my TA150 for 11yrs and still counting:D. It's bec of change of job tat I need to change my ride now. Pulsar is still on my short list of bikes to buy...just tat the confidence level of Puslar vs Honda and Yamaha in terms of maintenance costs. And it seems there is only 1 workshop tat hve the spares and skill to maintain Pulsar. I like to able to send my bike to the nearest shop if needed. Hopefully, u can help dispel the `myths' and get more pple to to ride Pulsar. I'm definitely one who would love to own a Pulsar. I think it's a cool bike. Just cannot get over the minimal problems I hve with my current bike and would like to own another bike just like tat. One bike tat I believe is reliable is CBF150 but it doesn't fully fit to exactly wat i'm looking for:).

I had a Bajaj Pulsar for 1 year and I rode it for like 12000 kms for the year. I lived in AMK, about 28 kms round trip from JB. I hardly ever filled petrol in SG, that too only in emergencies and only like 1L. My Pulsar's tank could hold 18L and I always filled 15-17.5 Ltrs when I go to pump. According to my calculations I could save about 15$ per trip and I think it was really worth it. As the pulsar had excellent FC of 45km/ltr. I topped up only once every 3 weeks or so.

I also went only during lazy sundays afternoons when no work to do. So I used to always enjoy the trip. A real win-win situation for me.

How bad can it be? Honestly, you will never know what might pop up. 2B 4 stroker will still cost more to fix than a 2B 2 stroker as far as the engine goes, 4 strokers got valves and all that stuff, 2 strokes just have ports.

considering the ever increase fuel cost i am also considering a 2nd hand Pulsar 200. called universal motor and it cost around 3-4k plus for one. just need to top up a bit after trading in my current bike.

have been reading up these few days about pulsar and it seem the reliability of pulsar does have some turth to it. not sure will the saving of fuel in long term will be use to pay for the repair.

Well, while buying the bike, if you start the engine and the sound everything is fine then should be ok. Its unlikely that suddenly something will pop up, as long as you maintain it well.

2 stroke may be cheaper to overhaul, but it needs to be done more regularly there will always be carbon build up in the exhaust in the block etc. Need to worry if 2T level is fine or not. You can have piston jam and what not. Haha. No wonder people shun 2 stroke these days.

I'm currently staying and working in the East; travelling approx 11.0km to work and vice versa, a total of 22.0km per trip. My ride is currently a Phantom TA150.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I may be working in Jurong soon and estimated distance is 46.0km, thus, full round trip is = 92.0km!! As such, I'm concern as fuel consumption will go up min 4 X.

So, looking for biker's opinion:

1. Cont'd using current bike and accept tat cost will go up 4 X?

2. Change bike??

If so, my criteria is:

a. Good FC

b. Decent pickup

c. reasonable max speed of 120.0kmh

d. Low Maintenance

e. Ride comfort

f. Reliable

g. Parts availability

Bikes I'm considering:

a. Honda Tiger 200cc

b. Yamaha FZ150i

c. Sym GMAX 150i

I know that are some bikes out there tat might fit my needs but I didn't shortlist here as it's either I'm not aware or tat they are percieved to be unreliable and need to modify or maintenance are high.

With the three choices, I'd go for the tiger. Same engine as the ta200, comfortable riding position. fz150i is too sporty. Gmax is a scooter.. we all need something in between our legs ;)
