Hi,

I'm newbie hereand hope that fellow forummers would be able to advise where is a good place (reasonable price) to get some protective gears for daily commute. As I've just had a minor accident, but left me on crutches for 2 months. I think I will want to invest in some protective gears like gloves and elbow guard.

Hope to learn more from here.. Cheers!

Lim Ah Boy

Regina.

Motoworld have a great variety of stuff too.

U can consider mesh/armour jacket as well-beta protection for the upper body.

Thanks for the info. So is Motoworld at Kaki Bukit or Lavender?

hi mavfia, sorry to hear you had a minor accident. What happened if i may ask? I personally got my personal protection gears from motoworld at lavender. I haven been to the kaki bukit one so cant comment about the shop there.

i believe its much better to wear a mesh jacket at least than elbow guards. Like some of the more experienced riders mentioned, you can check out the komine jackets at motoworld. I find it easier to try stuff there than ah boy as they do have a makeshift kind of changing room to try stuff on. Ah boy is so crowded. Haven really stepped into Regina though.

Jacket price ranges from 100-300. Depends on what you wanna get. You can consider some armored jackets that have protection on

- elbows

-arms

-shoulders

-back

-chest

Well, thats almost the best you can get. Of course, there are jackets which have some and not all of the protection. Up to choice and budget.

Gloves, try to get those with hard protection especially on the palms, mine has protection on the fingers too. Palms is a must as usually we do a palm first contact on the road.

If you have the cash, actually you should get a mesh pants or armored pants too. I did quite a bit of research, from statistics, it shows that most injuries from a fall comes from, in descending order

- legs

-upper body

-head

-chest

-spine

-abdomen

-face

this is from the US department of traffic or something report in 2008. But i think locally we will have more facial injuries amongst riders as most wear open face rather than FF like the US.

You can do some research on your own like what protective gears to get, which brand etc. So far i have komine for jacket, pants, gloves and boots. Its pretty good, fits us asians as its made by the japanese.

Hope this helps and ride safe

thanks bro for the informative details. Glove is definitely a must for me now. I'll evaluate what kind of jacket will be most suitable for daily use as I do not intent to do cross country road trip.

1) Fox gloves can find a Cash Converters.

2) Helmets too, but you might as well just buy brand new at Lim Ah Boy. Get a full face with a clear visor.

3) On Clutches? Then you should consider a sturdy high cut boots. Most of us can safely wear high cut hiking boots as riding boots and wear for work too.

4) Knee & Elbow guards, if you are on a tight budget, search for inline skates/rollarblades guards, wear them tight under your jeans or over your work pants and over your long sleeve tees/shirts.

5) Mesh jacket.

I was seriously thinking of inline skate elbow before I came to this forum, but now knowing that there is something meant for road use. I'll definitely get them.

If ur luck is good, might find some good gems in the garage sales. My boots and jacket are second hand, but they are almost new and I saved almost $100+ on them.

same, got my Dianese mesh jacket and glove from garage sales.

it's used but still in gd condition. save $ too.

Seriously? Lim Ah Boy? The Lim Ah Boy at sim lim area??? The same Lim Ah Boy who sells Fake OGK FF4 @ $180? The fake OGK fullface helmet which costs $180 and the visor will fly out when you're going at 120km/h on the expressway with the visor CLOSED DOWNWARDS and u check your blindspot??? Seriously??? Personal experience with Lim Ah Boy in March 2009. Visor detached itself on the expressway @ 120km/h and visor down. Flew right off the hinges. And I wore it like only 4 times. Never dropped before at that time. Now it dropped and I found out another thing... The vents are double-sided taped on. Lol... It's not I'm defaming him or what. It really happened. I still keep the helmet with me in case he wants to sue me for "defaming/spoiling his reputation" not that he has any good reputation... Lol... For all of your info, his company is not registered under Accounting Corporate Regulatory Association (ACRA) as Lim Ah Boy Pte Ltd. So if something happens to your gear or helmets while riding, u can't sue him. And another piece of info, this Lim Ah Boy was sued by ARAI for "Copyright infringement/ illegal use of ARAI's trademark/ willfully duplicating ARAI helmets while aware of the consequences" lol. U still wanna buy from him? Cheap and lousy quality products. Trust me. Rs 959 @ $120? Lol. Vents double-sided taped on? Lol. $120 can get u a PSB approved fullfaced helmet from motoworld and still can get back $20 change.

Mesh jackets, motoworld selling komine with armor... G-max race selling berik jackets with armor... I think Lim Ah Boy selling jackets also, but armor made from what? Cardboard or styrofoam? Lol. Not sure. I won't ever go to his shop again. ;) even if his shop is the last accessory shop in Singapore. Lol. Throw face. Sell lousy quality things at such high prices and make the riders believe that they're completely good quality stuff. Lol... Fullface helmet... Lol...

Cheapest and most easy to get boots are your army Goretex boots. Since we only go reservist once a year, why waste them? Use them.

Waterproof, protects your ankle, hell it's claimed to be supposed to protect your feet from landmines. Good enough for street use.

motoworld has everything you need in one shop, so its more convenient.

can get in 1 shot.

basic protection is elbow and shoulder pads. but you can upgrade to back and chest armour like myself. but those are more expensive.

you'll get used to wearing jackets in time, so the issue of hot weather etc is out of question.

your SAF gortex boot good for riding also.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

Best thing abt SAF Goretex (besides being FOC, use stupid reservist credits), is that they're comfy for walkin ard too. Hardcore riding boots suck when you've parked your bike and have to walk ard town to shop or otherwise. Worse case scenario, your boots will split or break... or those itsy-bitsy protective plates will start to snap off... after prolonged walking use.

Save them for your riding trips. Use SAF goretex for local street riding.
