Hi all,

I am new to Singapore and to put it lightly, I am shocked to see the high prices of the bikes here. Can someone tell me why the machine price of the bikes are so expensive. I can somehow manage to swallow the 2K COE price but the machine price is 3 times the price of the price in my home country!!! Why !!!

LOL. cos the govt set a high vehicle tax rates for the vehicles here. for both motorcycles and cars and also the ARF (additional registration fees) which is like 150% of the open market value. correct me if im wrong but ya. if you ask me, i think its more of getting in revenue as compared to "trying to control the amount of private vehicles on the road"..

i think if the govt encourages more bikes than cars, our traffic congestion might be solved. though i think hell will freeze over first before that actually happens.

Where are you from?

All vehicles in Singapore had a 100% import tax.. Therefore such a expensive machine price..

A new Super Tenere in USA costs USD13,000=SGD16,900

But Local agent selling about S$30,000 for just the machine price..

Here, you wanna own it.. You pay for it.. Sad but true..

The price I paid for my Japanese hatchback, I can buy a nice BMW in Thailand..

That really sux...I am a little irritated with all the hopping off bus-mrt...takes me 60 minutes to reach the office and I have to change my shirt!! The government should not tax so high..but they could limit the number of permits. That will help solve their problem of limiting vehicles on the road. THis whole tax thingy looks like a money making scheme if you ask me. Anyway...some advice here please....if I buy a bike...say a KTM Duke 200 for 13k OTR....how much can I expect to sell it after say 2 years of use ?

.

A KTM 200 duke is roughly 11k machine yes? after 2 years, say its a purely stock bike, if i would guess it would fetch say 7k? Just a wild guess.

Just saying, Limiting the number of permits will not quell the demand for vehicles. As for the higher bike prices, it is a simple logic really,

higher vehicle prices = lesser people can afford vehicles = lesser traffic on the road

Problem is, people who can afford, do not really have a need to drive.

Welcome to Singapore, it is a money making scheme, the govt here is the biggest loanshark on this side of the planet. KTM Duke 200 for 13k? After 2 years? Can't say, people usually won't pay 7K for a 2nd hand 2B bike when kups are more popular here because if i'm looking for a 2B bike, its usually when I'm looking for my first bike...or looking for a side bike, for side bikes, I don't want it to be expensive, it just has to be cheap, maintenance must be cheap and spare parts must be plentiful.

Difficult to say for the KTM duke because its not really an offroad bike offroaders would be lookin for nor is it cheap enough to be considered over a brand new kup.

Haha that's e reality in sg where land r scarce... To control e population of vehicles, the born of COE was introduce more than a decade ago... So like it or not u gotta follow the system here... :)

yeah...no choice I guess. So I am just trying to arrive at the cost of owning a bike in SNG. Say I buy a KTM 200 for 13k and sell it for 7K after two years....that is 2.5k for per year => around 200 per month. Subtract the 50 bucks I pay to SMRT .. so this is 150 per month. Benefit = Travel comfort everyday. Expensive compared to other countries....I guess I will visit the casino more often and hopefully I am lucky for at least 150 a month:angel:

Well, thats the way of life here in singapore. The bigger the motorcycle(displacement), the greater the depreciation per year. If you think this is bad you should calculate the costs of owning a car here.

All the best with the casino though:cool:

u forgot to include the maintience cost and price of fuel u will end up with more than 200 a month. if u plan to sell off in 2 years just get a 2nd hand bike but I dont tihnk u can get KTM 200 since very few people sell them u can get other 2B bikes

Right you are...More trips to the casino then! One way to justify the 100% duties on the bike is via the low taxes here....(Boy...am I desperate or what!) - Extra duty = Tax to the government = which is true...but just another way to look at the hard earned money I am throwing at the government.

Looking at the forum posts here...I get a feeling that bikes like R15 will be more easier to sell in the future compared to a Duke. Not to mention, add another 3k to the price of a Duke and you get close to Class 2A territory!! This makes the Duke quite over-priced for what it is. Anyone know the OTR price of a Yamaha TW200 ? THis seems to be a popular model around here....

You haven play you already lose $100.

haha...KTMs are a dangerous temptation !!! I think the Yamaha R15 will soon be the national bike in Singapore..like Honda Phantom. So I have a better chance of selling my bike at a good price after two years if it is a R15..rather than a KTM.:dot: But my heart lies in bed with the KTM Duke 200.

Coz in sg u get to ride the bike 365/24/7 days/hrs/weeks per year lol.. If u look at our neighbour across the border.. 120k RM for a r1 isnt cheap either.

Probably makes up for it in petrol, parking fees, fines and ERP.
