In regards to tires, it's up to individual preferences. Most impt is to get the right size, ....

Pardon me for typo error as this is sent by mobile.

Please could you, or anyone, advise which are the RIGHT size? I bought the bike recently and a newbe to DS400 so I will probably need to buy new tires next year. Thanks lot!i

Other couple of questions:

- Where to buy a pillion back rest (my 2hand bike came with the frame but without this soft pillow..). Can anyone let go?:-)

- how often do you do a regular service (EO change etc) on your ageing DS400? Mine is 12 years and 65kkm

IF anyone has a file with the bike manual - pls kindly share via email/PM

Thanks lot!

You can view DS400 owner's manual here http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/owners-manuals

Our DS4 and DSC4 are the same as their VStar650 versions.

I know bcos I was ex owner of DS4 & DSC4 and that I use their 650 parts catalog as reference when I placed my part orders with HongLeong or with AutoMachinery.

Instead of documenting on the blog, let me list the rebuild here in the forum

Acquired a 2004 dragstar classic

Have to rebuild so many bikes as I change bike quite often. Getting quite sian. Lucky this bike left 9 years coe.

So going all out on this rebuild. bo pian coz i like to ride far far away..

Front wheel bearing was giving screeching sound during free wheel.

True enough when removing the wheel and inspect, bearing sibei jialat sia..

I can pull out broken metal fragments?? Sibei sian but had to reinstall back but with some grease on it.

Better lah now.

So ordered from my favourite bearing manufacturer all balls 25-1334 .. 16usd

So i test my steering bearing.. got notches when i turn my steering.. i remember my shadow ace also had this.. doesnt really bother you when you are used to it. but after you change, bike will feel more nimble.

All balls again.. all balls steering bearing are cone bearings.. great work of art compared to oem.. part number 22-1004 24usd.

Got abit kiasu. the ex owner ride off road ah? bearings all shot..

So just order the rear loh.. tot so easy.. all balls dun have!! email also no reply.. maybe christmas lah..

Saw chapalang website selling bearings but the bigger bearing seems like a very rare custom size??!

Saw pivotworks have"kit" about 40usd.. mai lah expensive two bearing and two simple o-rings.. so i search individual parts..

ZWBE-041 & ZWBE-074.. wah swee lah total with shipping 17usd only kekekke . wah knn 10 usd per 0 ring..

Size of rear bearings.. two pieces

  • (1) 15x42x13 Bearing
    (1) 15x47x13 Bearing

Oh ya.. today pump petrol.. swee lah 23km/L. Means my maintainance works.. improved from 21km/L

Is the star bought at kaki bukit there? Wow, hydher , you are a handyman . Most guys especially myself would probably go to the shop and wonder what are the problems and getting ketok by shop.

Posted

Hello drag addicts. Heheheh.sorry. it seems quite here. Just saw a beautiful d4 classic today. While I like the shaft and air cooled character of this bike, I am not too sure if the handlebar is original. This bike and the one I saw at kaki bukit a few weeks back seem to have the same wideeeee bar.my lasr cruiser 1987 honda shadow 750 wasnt this wide.

1) is it possible to change to a less wider bar?

2) the passenger seat is so suitable for petite people. Anyone change to a bigger one?

Thanks for reading

Posted (edited)

yes correct from kaki bukit there.

Im still learning.. quite fun if you have the tools, space, patience, balls and the internet.

The original bar is super wide and alot of pull back. I find it rather weird too.

If you wanna buy new bar can.. make sure its 25mm/1inch thick.

If I can find a mechanic as meticulous as I am, I wouldnt mind supporting him.

If you want bigger seat... pretty sure eugene saddlery can do it for you at a premium price.

Or get a mustang seat.. hehehe

So Ive read many horror story about the shaft splines failing on a dragstar due to the rather "Open concept".

Seal design quite kanasai lah.. Thought of using a rubber boot but after thinking of the high rotation speed, better not lah..

Just type "vstar drive shaft failure" in google or youtube. Make me cannot sleep properly at night.

http://www.650ccnd.com/shaft2.htm here is a link i used to help with the project and youtube.

When I opened, I glad I did it as it was a horrow what I found inside. Its like a time bomb.

Even noticed some diamond like shine in the carbon/dirt that was inside!! hahahaha

The wet spline smelt like brake fluid/atf? Maybe rust and water smell?

Scary man

Yamaha doesnt lube it out of the factory. So better do this everytime the rear wheel come off.

Cleaning was a nightmare. Worst than cleaning rifle afte live firing exercise..

Slap on some solid grease. And put it all back up. Aligning the shaft was a nightmare. Tried sanding the washer and stuff.. didnt work.. in the end just used gorilla strength to tighten the rear axle and it was as close as I could bring it to be aligned.

Below are some pics.. hope you feel the urgency to do it..

IMG_20151225_205457[1].jpgIMG_20151225_205652[1].jpgIMG_20151225_205712[1].jpgIMG_20151225_210247[1].jpgIMG_20151225_210253[1].jpg

Since wheel was out, I put some grease on all the brake shoe rotating parts.. oh my god.. night and day difference.

Anyway the grease you use try to have ptfe and moly in it..

After much research, a right grease to use is Honda M-60(60%molybdenum) which is now replaced by M-77. FJT didnt carry it.

I end up getting 200+g of Loctite 234227 LOC51048 Moly Paste Anti-Seize Compound which is at 65%

Many greases that say it has moly is it is probabbly 5% or less of moly in it

Here is the allballs front wheel bearing. I pry it open with a sharp razor blade(and no.. this doesnt compromise the seal)

Even being a premium.. im not impressed at all by the sealing. To imagine how the oem would be.

I think they put the minimum grease on as you can see. Doesnt hurt to pack more in..

Packed on some high quality grease... then realise I had to use alot! Wah too ex lah cannot. added on some ah boy kaya adler lithim grease over the expensive grease.. haha cheapo to the max

IMG_20151226_225243[1].jpgUntitled.jpgIMG_20151226_224823[1].jpgIMG_20151226_225108[1].jpg

After much research, over greasing bearings can lead to shortening of bearing life.

A rule is 1/3 of the space in the bearing.

So its something worth tinkering about if you want to attempt it.

Cant stand the rust.. So decided to paint it. Its gonna be quite messy no matter how careful you try to be.

Simple kangaroo silver paint, bristle brush and patience.

Was rather pleased with the results.

Did some saddlebag brackets too..

Basically, you have to make two L Bracket each side and tie the saddle to it

Remember the rear has to be shorter as the nut that holds the bracket is higher a little.

You might need longer bolts too..

You must have your own garage to dismantle all of these. Did you put a main stand to do you work.?

Posted (edited)

I just use a normal scissors jack.

Well, I stay in a HDB. I just find a spot that does not bother anyone and clean up really good after use.

Also be considerate when it comes to sound etc.

Todays project is servicing a starter motor

Its hard to tell how long they last. If by grabbing the splint and its not smooth to turn after servicing, its probabbly a gone case.

Carbon brushes are available for sale and you can solder it on.

One symptom of a failed starter motor is a click sound when trying to start. Take a big mallet or something and give the starter motor a knock as you depress the starter to break it free.

If it starts after doing this, you have a failing starter and you can try cleaning it out.

Model number SM-13 From mitsuba.

Quoted $350 new.

Most of the time, these just needs a clean up or replacement of the carbon brushes.

You will have to drain the engine oil for this project.

Items needed.

Rag, grease, 7mm socket & motor oil.

For such complex Items, Keep snapping photos and be organised so you are certain what goes where.

Clean everything up with motor oil and wipe it clean when you are done.

Clean the carbon brushes with a clean dry rag less the oil.

IMG_20151227_115833[1].jpg

Before removing note on the casing there are alignment marks. If there isnt or worn, make new marks.

IMG_20151227_120258[1].jpg

Washers are stuck together so make sure you know the order!

2.jpg

Dont yank it out.. press the screw protruding in and wiggle the assembly out.

3.jpg

Carbon brushes looks adequate and assembly looks clean

4.jpg

Clean in between the copper pieces with a razor. If surface is rough, lightly sand it.

If you are good with a multimeter, there is an extra step you can do to test for shorting.. you can google or youtube it.

Lubricate all washers with grease lightly

Put some grease at this tip

IMG_20151227_124307[1].jpg

Assemble everything in reverse order. You might want to grease the O-rings but they do have two sides with the O-rings. Dont mess them up.

Good luck and I hope this helps someone.

Where to order? I might need it...

Every morning my brake gives a screeeaming sound (when I brake for the first time before exiting parking or on first junction) - after that it seems the break works ok, no screaming sound and kinda breaks normally (I hope!!!).

What does this mean with this sound?

Do I just need to replace the pads (as they worn out till metal) or this is just some residual dirt or dump disk after overnight?

I have checked the front break - pads are still ok (visible) but similar sound sometimes also...

Sorry for a naïve question, I hope you know the answer as you are so good expert. Thanks in advance!

i.changed mine out at first motors e day i got e bike

yes.. this is some residual.

replacing e pads have not worked for some of my buddies.

you have to clean the brake liners well.. where e brakepad presses against.

most shops will.just use an air compressor
