Hi,

Read in some British bike mag that it is not recommended to ride using a safety boots (with steel toe). Reason is, in the event of an accident, the steel toe cap acts like a guillotine, it can sever the toes.

Just thought you guys should know.

From,

OMD

Hi OMD,

You need rain boots - the kind that you wear over your shoes. I think some of the forumers here have tried it and can give you better opinions than I do.

I've tried 2 kinds of boots:

1) SAF GoreTex

OKAY for touring. Their stubby soles make them not so great for shifting and braking. You can't feel your levers. They also don't have reinforcements on the gear-shifting area, and suffer more wear and tear. However, they are waterproof and you can walk around in them comfortably and inconspicuously (nobody knows you're wearing them if you cover them with your jeans or pants).

DANGEROUS for track. The stubby soles and the lack of toe sliders cause them to catch onto the tarmac very easily! I touched down twice and both times the boots caught onto the track surface and caused me to wobble. Definitely not recommended!

2) SIDI Vertebra 2 Tepor

QUITE GOOD for touring. Boots are built for riding, so everything is in place. They are also waterproof and breathable, so they feel very good for long riders.

However, it is harder to walk in them due to the Vertebra system. Also, they look more flashy due to the toe sliders, reinforcement patches and ankle braces. The soles also don't seem suitable for extended walking.

PERFECT for track. Obviously that is because the boots are mainly built for that. The calf adjustment system ensures that your pants / suit will fit inside. They have all the protection you expect from race boots, and are breathable for hotter days. Very recommended.

The SIDI boots win on almost all accounts except being somewhat more flashy and a little less comfortable to walk around in. They also cost more than twice the price of the SAF boots and cannot be used when you go for reservist. :p

So which one is better? You decide. For me, I switched over from SAF boots to SIDI after my bad experiences with the former on PG.

I agree with rhema83. Just met an accident in PG few days back and I was wearing arm boots then. It doesn't give the neccessary protection on certain part and I injury my foot. My friend who crash also but wear a properly track shoe did not injury his leg then.

Basically the important point is to find the right boots for the purpose. Different pple have different requirements.

Riding boots nowadays come equipped with the necessary protection, be it for racing or normal street riding. It also boils down to how much moola you're willing to fork out. The best pair may not be the most value for money.

Most importantly, don't save on riding gear.... it might juz save your life.
