1. cannot compare diesel vs petrol coz they are using different technologies

one is based on compression and the other is based on combustion.

2. personally i do not think there is a limit of 2 litres for diesel engines. u think those 5-tonners or cement mixers really 2l capacity meh.

3. bigger cc does not mean more dangerous. its the person behind the wheels.

4. u arnt the only ones complaining. would-be cab owners are cursing and swearing coz they would be paying much more road tax.

im not sure if the computation is the same as petrol or not lah.

assuming it is, a 3 litre vehicle would cost at least 1 grand in road taxes. compared to the 2 litre toyota crown

5. this is a discussion thread hoping to make lives better for the community and i hope the thread starter hopes to do something about it else its not supposed to be here.

6. i believe we are not interested in whoever's encounter with whichever taxi on the road, pls take it else where.

these... are my thoughts

thanks and regards

let the taxi drivers get the 3litre diesel engine la..think at most it'll go as fast as a 1.6litre petrol car.. btw, turbo diesel engines are norm but it merely makes it run more smoothly, not equivalent to a turbo-charged petrol engine..

If you follow Bangkok or Malaysia taxi standard, prepare to pay twice the current taxi fare cause these 2 country use petrol engine. Moreover, they are sedan size car and not suitable to carry big fat ass or luggage.

Singapore and Hong Kong uses the same type of taxi model, Toyota Crown diesel 3000cc. This model is consider super luxury class limo in Japan, only fit for company president hor, except the furnishing and engine is different la.

Current minimium economy size diesel engine come in 3000cc form. Those oldie 2000cc Toyota Corona is consider antique and is long due for replacemnet. If scare take the Nissan Cefiro only 2700cc, else take the Toyota Crown one, 3000cc and it's turbo diesel engine hor!

the real toyota corwn looks totally diff den out taxis even on the outside.

One simple concept: Customer service and comfort.

A 3,000 cc taxi provides more comfort than 1 2,000cc one, generally.

Its a reasonable decision for a company.

As to 3,000 cc taxis being more dangerous than 2,000 cc ones, that depends on the driver. I mean based on that kind of logic, Porches and Ferrarris should be killing us by the dozens...

A 3000cc diesel engine may not be as powerful as a 3000cc petrol engine but it got way more torque thus making it more flexible in any gears. Foe e.g, a Merc diesel 320 produces around 500 NM of torque, which is more than a Merc 500 5000cc petrol at 460NM.

for information... the cabbies dun pay rd taxes... they pay for the diesel they used and the rental of the veh.. the cabbies are complaining abt the high rental and the high diesel price cos larger displacement drink more fuel...

diesel engines are more torquey compare with the petrol engines with the same displacement... the diesel engine got a larger stroke than the petrol engine... petrol engine got bigger bore...

and for the displacement, its the total volume of all the cylinders in engine... take the dia of the bore to find the area multiply by the stroke u get volumne for a cylinder, then multiply by the number of cylinders in the engine to get the total displacement...

thanx for reading.. i got these info from all the books in read..

why dun u go the the nearest taxi and look at the windscreen

Looks like bike riders are as ignorant of taxi drivers as car drivers are of bike riders...

Taxi drivers can rent or own their vehicles... owners will pay road tax. If you are renting, the road tax part of the costs is in the rental....

FYI, gahment vehicles have their road tax exempted. Check out their disc. Public buses and taxis have to pay road tax, just like us. Taxi road tax is S$7,700 per year, regardless of engine cc.

You're wrong. Basically there are 2 groups of cab owners.

1) Cab owner, ie private owner. The owner is outrightly the real owner of the taxi. The number plate registration belongs to him, even when he buys a new cab. The licence will be terminated when he dies. eg are Yellow Top taxis, and some NTUC taxis. The owners pays the road tax to LTA from his own pocket.

2) Hirer driver. These cab drivers do not pay the taxi's road tax directly. The companies takes care of the cabs, from road tax to maintenance.

Edit: Cabbies can choose between the 1.8 litre Toyota Corona, or the 2.3 litre Crown, or 2.8 litre Cedric from the rental companies. The reason why some took up the bigger taxis are i) power steering ii) better stability iii) more space and comfort, better appeal to ang-mos, and locals alike. The Corona how no power steering, and get very noisy when running at higher speeds. Of course those who chose the 2.5 or 3 litre Merz taxi or MPV taxis or London cabs for other different reasons.

want a faster cab?

the merz 220 and 250

smaller cc but yet alot faster than the 3000cc crowns

in fact, those merz cabbies drive more dangerously than the crown cabbies

they like to show off their faster acceleration.

Increase taxis CC so that they can tailgate bikers, shine headlight while tailgating, then overtake the bikers then slam their brake infront of the bikers so that more bikers can die.... hahaha...

IMF... so must make the foreigners feel like that taking London Cabs in Singapore, big, powerful and comfortable rides...

Bigger faster taxis? E'way going to Changi Airport will resemble an F1 circuit..

As for mercs taxi drivers..Enough said..Really nice to be able to see their bumper less than a metre away from the rear of my bike ona 50km/h decelerating lane turning right..To make it better the falshing of their bright headlights reflecting off my side mirrors thus blinding me while trying to negotiate a turn..From my view there are considerate taxi drivers..But how many? Sadly I've to say about 10%..In a whole day of riding very rarely do I meet these kind drivers but the opposite on the other hand..Everyday I get to meet them..From cutting lanes and turning w/out signalling to honking the horn and sudden braking to pick up passengers..

Its time to be MORE careful on roads/e'ways..

i must agreed, taxi is our no.1 enemy...nearly gt killed on AYE when im changin lane to the EXTREME LEFT,and out of nowher appears a comfort sonata vroom passed me at a distance left then a full-arm length.

IMHO,prehaps we could gathered petition to write to gahment.installin sme speed limiter to these over-powered taxi.juz like the army vehicle, limiter cant beep more then 3 times.

To gain something, there must be a sacrifice. This is the principle of equivalent trade

taxis are seriously a MAJOR ROAD HAZARD.

is there anything we can do if we find them driving recklessly?

i've been in many situations where i nearly became superman due to reckless taxi drivers.

My dad drives a cab, his previous Crown was a new car when he first got it. They limit the speed, his top speed only abt 110 although pick up is good due to big cc.. and FYI, u cant own a cab in singapore, only through rental. The last few cabs owned by taxi drivers are the few remaining yellow top cabs without the "Yellow top" logo.

BTW the new auto hyundai taxi are very fast. Sat in one that day and the old uncle drove very fast. 120-130km/h for the whole journey on E-ways. Although auto-transmission taxi maybe more comfortable for the driver as well as the passenger, it encourages the driver to speed even more as hard acceleration becomes a breeze when all u have to do is to step hard on the accelerator as there is no troublesome gear shifting.
