Hi fellow riders, I'd like to gather some opinions based on you guys' experiences on the pros and cons of upgrading to a 2A/2 bike as opposed to sticking with a 2b bike besides better FC for 2b and speed/power for 2A/2.

(Talking about upgrading bike, not license)

Anyone for sharing? :)

Big bikes to be honest are more for show on Sg roads. How fast can u go with the roads being so congested? On a congested road, kup Kia is king.

May 2005 - July 2007: Honda Phantom TA200 (FU 3*** S)

July 2007 - Dec 2016: Honda CB400 Spec III (FBB 7***X)

Dec 2016 - Aug 2017: Yamaha FZ1N (FBD 4***E)

Aug 2017 - Present: Kawasaki Z1000SX (FBF 6***B)

give you my take.

my 2b was phantom.

now riding a 400cc bike. got my class 2 not long ago. didn't upgrade to class 2. why?

2a is PERFECT for singapore use and occasional malaysia trips, just enough power and stability and size. easy to overtake cars when needed, easy to be noticeable for motorist.

when i was riding my phantom, whenever i had to overtake cars, need to wait for the bike to pick up speed.....

BUT maintenance is also much more expensive.

power is important yes, but you must also know financially if you can support the power that comes with class 2a/2. class 2 insurance and road tax is no joke.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

but if u buy a brand new super 4 revo, the price cost the same as a brand new xj600 (i am not comparing used bikes as it is very subjective). And their maintenance is about the same except super 4 has damn many cheap after market parts.

Yes i think 400cc is enough for singapore road. I dont like 2b bike has it is not stable during rain. they should introduce all the new 400cc models in japan. but now in singapore the class 2a models is very limited. and a class 2a maintenance is not much difference from a class 2. Might as well get a class 2 bike?

yeah, but you must factor in the insurance and road tax price. it was part of the reason why i sticked to 2a. all in, i am looking at paying up to 500 bucks more per year in road tax, insurance. and i haven't included how much i have to top up to get a class 2 bike. more or less 3k-5k top up.

the other reason was because i spent quite abit restoring my current bike from crap to excellent. 15 year old bike restored to look like its only 1-2 years old.

if you're mechanically inclined, then no issue with buying 2nd hand as you can more or less know the condition in person, but if you're not. stick to brand new for reliability and fuss free motoring.

but for this situation, i will go for Duke 390. seriously, if i didn't restore my bike, i will be placing booking liao.

To be honest, 2A is more than sufficient if you don't intend to go up north.

Bike is stable at higher speeds, good acceleration (to get you outta risky situations), relatively good FC (depends on which bike you get).

Class 2 is more for peeps who really have an ideal bike in mind. Riding a class 2 bike is for fufulling dreams or passion (touring as well). For those who change to class 2 bike just for the sake of having a bigger bike, they will find the expenses a PITA.

Yeah Duke 390 looks good and reasonable price. Hope they bring in more 400cc bikes, I dont like the looks of the current 400cc.

Class 2 bike road tax got so much? thought around $250 a years. class 2A is $110, so its $140 more per year. Insurance is few hundred more also, got so much? I look at the used bike section, the price of super 4 spec 4 top up abit can buy fazer liao.

An inline 4 400cc is good enough for SG but to me the price of DRZs, Spec 3s and especially Revos, I might as well get a Class 2 bike. All bikes can go far north to Thailand and beyond but if you're going with people who usually do, get a class 2.

I think restoring any 15 year old or older bikes will cost a bomb.

not really. depends on how resourceful you are with parts and fixing stuff, saving labour costs.

then again, wasn't the money part that got me. was the passion for the bike. it's rare, it's retro.

and i learnt alot of mechanical skills fixing the bike myself. something to be proud of personally, turning a rustbucket into a clean motorcycle.

insurance subjective... road tax higher then then 2A of cause...

rest should have no differences... where i don't think maintenance increase much except tyre..

Yes, I understand what you mean, restoration isn't easy if you wanna keep it as original as possible, more of a niche I would say, your friends will all hark on you for wasting so much money spending on old bikes when you could have saved more by getting a new one hahahah. As far as labour costs go, I'd just get all the parts I need to get first then send to shop so I cut down on repeated charges.

class2a bike is generally for those who wants to be practical for daily usage with better power than class2b bike.

class2 bike is generally for those who wants the ultimate passion of riding and achieve their dream bike.

In conclusion, it depends on u to decide the pros n cons.

CL2? If you can afford it, then why not?

Sure you don't need it on SG roads.

But a CL2 bike is not about practicality. It's about scratching that itch on your backside for more power.

For SG roads, CL2A is enough. CL2B works too. But you won't be able to out-accel or outrun cars at the lights.

And you always go up North for a blast, then it makes even more sense to get a CL2 too. A 2A bike can travel. But if you wanna cruise a constant 150 to 180kph to KL, Genting, Cameron or even TH, then you'll soon realize that your bike is almost always running stressed. At the upper range of its rpm; while a CL2 bike will probably be running at half its max rpm range comfortably.

Remember the original Hayabusa tagline? What was that?

It's not about top speed or max power. It's called effortless performance.

Other bikes will be stressed at the type of performance envelope that the Haya finds effortless.

if you have that one dream class 2 bike, and you can financially afford it, go for it. why not. just that once in your life before you're old, go ahead and feel wat its like living like a big biker. why wait till one day you have kids and they grow up and your kids have kids and then you start thinking: "dam i wish i had decided to buy that R1/Haya/Ducati/FJR/Harley when i was younger." that dream bike is worth it even if you ride it only a year or two.

Only if you can financially afford it. if you can't, then compromise with something as close as you can to that dream bike within your financial means. try second hand or something. if that one also cannot afford, then don't do it. the dream bike is not worth serious financial sacrifices.

but if you have no dream class 2 bike in particular, no track or touring in your "things to do before i'm too old" list, you're just wondering if going up to class 2 bike is worth it..... Don't bother. it is not the practical thing to do. there is nothing in it for you.

you will find class 2 bikers say the same thing. if its your dream and can afford, do it. no dreams in particular or cannot afford, dun bother.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

After they get caught by LTA, they'll be forced to agree LOL
