Sick of studying for test tomorrow. I remember people were posting up their dream bike garages a while back... Lemme indulge myself

 

Touring : BMW R1200RT or Honda STX1300

 

Track : RVF or RS250 to learn how to ride first, then only will know what track bike I want.

 

Motard : No idea at all. No experience in this field. Have to ride to know. Hypermotard or normal? Probably wouldn't get a DRZ4sm to ride, I hear its too commuting oriented. CH please advice on this.

 

Dirt : KTMs... No discussion needed at all.

 

Commuting : SilverWing or MP3. Damn I love scooters, great storage space, comfort and convenience.

 

Off-the-beaten trail : R1200GS heavily modded (non-adventure version, simply because my inseam length is too short) if I'm to ride up to UK.

 

F800GS for Malaysia / Thailand exploration.

 

I made the above choices based upon the assumption that they did not need to satisfy any criteria outside of their said field.

 

Could anyone else share their thoughts, or perhaps throw out even better choices so I may rearrange my dream garage iist in my head? :D

His WR2 has been on sale for a v. long time. No idea why no takers. Derek had a ride on the wr2 and thought it was an "ok" buy.

there are many reasons why tire start to lose traction.

 

Based on my experience, sliding on supermoto bikes does result in some form of wear and tear, but i have never experience tires losing traction because i tried to backing it in every corner possible. It just wears faster, as long as there's still threads and tire is not more than 1yr old, it's good to go.

 

During my most siao-on period, I played at go-kart track 2-3 times a month and my dunlop rear tire last about 3months.

 

During the 3 races i joined in 2006, plus few practise sessions, 1 pair of tires is enough for 1 season.

 

I think sportbike track enthusiasts change tires after 3-4 session of track?

 

Assuming that there's still a lot of threads left, maybe one of the reason why your michelin pilot sports start sliding 5-6laps could be because the tire overheated? tires on sportbike tends to overheat because of highspeed riding and weight of bike.

 

I don't think power slide will affect that much. It's really just my assumption.

 

Besides that, another reason could be the tire pressure you are using. 1psi will make hell lot of difference and it takes many track session to find the optimum tire pressure.

 

Furthermore, suspension settings will also affect tire traction. I'm not very sensitive to suspension settings and i never really bother to tune my rear shock. I only stiffen my front fork by adding spacers so that my fork will not dive too much during hard braking.

 

Size of the tire will affect too. Have to consult people who ride the same make for recommendation, sometimes following stock size doesn't mean it's the best size. It affects your lean angle, how fast your bike drops when you bank in. Maybe your tire start sliding because you corner too low and hit edge of tire?

 

Is michelin pilot sports a good track tire? Many of my motard frens recommend michelin pilot power 2CT and it's a very very good tire. I think many sportbike use this as well. Never skim on tires if you are track orientated. If you can afford not to ride the bike on daily basis (which i think u do cos u drive), then get good tires and ride with confidence. They have limited heat cycles, so best to ride as often as possible.

 

Supermoto bikes typically weigh 100+kg and the tracks we ride are much smaller. I seldom hit more than 100km/h on the tracks i played (esp for PG). I normally lose traction because the track has sand particles or i bank too low.

 

Seriously i don't quite understand the purpose of power sliding other than

1) to look nice because you exit the corner with style

2) you brake too late, cannot lean any lower in the corner and looks set to chiong into the gravel. Then you wack the throttle to make it for the corner.

 

It takes a lot of balls to do power slide because you are doing something against normal behaviour.

 

Can enlighten me?

the michelin pilot sports was for the purpose of riding safely in the rain and still being gd enuf for a track tyre. perhaps a pilot race or diablo sc2 will be better, but then how to go touring sia...

 

there're so few pple riding cbr900rr tt my info abt similar make settings r limited. tyre pressure wise i'm running a comfy 30front 32rear, gives me enuf traction, though i'm wondering if i can bump it up a little since my bike is heavier and can use a lil more to save tyres' overheating and wearing out...

 

previous bt090 on my cbr400rr lasted 4 track sessions b4 they cldn't tahan all the heat cycles. this time i think the pilot sports abt to give way too...maybe juz 1 more track session...

 

in fact when the power slide happens it's usually a lil after i crack the throttle for the exit of the turn. it's not a huge slide, but enough to shift my angle to a much straighter exit out of the corner. definitely not for style in my case, can't see anything plus if can see anything it's usually my legs flailing about.

 

yeah suspension, gonna tune them all over again...apparently after it came out of the bikeshop the settings all different again.

 

maybe the best way is to back it in on the entry of the corner, then power slide a little on the way out? the cornering sure become very short, but i wonder how the tyres will take it...and the balls.
