Harley Riders gather

Hey garyhwk, I didn't know you bought a Sportster too. Which one? No idea who beat me to the August Iron. I was too late and got to wait for September. I know that 2 guys got their Iron in July. Don't think they belong to this forum though.

Spoke to Daniel from the dealership last week and was told that shipment might be delayed. So I have no idea when my bike will reach our shores (hopefully still somewhere in September).

BTW just FYI, I'm riding a Street Triple now. The Iron will be my 2nd bike.

I feel that this thread is seriously lacking pictures!!! The overseas forums have pictures all over. Aren't Harleys supposed to be shown to pple? Come on pple, show me your bikes, let me oogle over them while I try to survive the long wait for my Iron :pity:

I've not ridden in at least 10 years, used to ride a S4, then i woke up one day and decided that i NEEDED to ride again, i think mid-life crisis. It started out with "any old bike will do as long as it runs, maybe even a scooter". But when i found out that second-hand harleys are actually quite affordable, there was no turning back from a harley. When i caught the Iron on youtube, my eyes glazed over and i told myself "that is it!!". Went down to speak with Daniel on a wednesday and he told me that the next available Iron was in Sep, Aug one chopped already. I told him that i would come back the following sat to test ride the 883 and then book the Iron. That friday evening, i read through this forum that a particular Yohji beat me to it!! I was like ! After some thinking, i decided that i will go for a pre-efi harley to try out how it was then and also decided that it would be a 1200 (since second-hand mah). Then stumbled on a Canadian wanting to sell his 2000 xl 1200s...it was gorgeous...:shades:. He's on home leave and will be back on 28 Aug. On 29, i will strap my legs across those engines, point north, turn the throttle all the way and not look back.....but dun think can go very far..peanut tank..:cheeky:. I'm starting with a sportster first to see if this riding interest will last...then see if want to upgrade later...the matt black cross-bones is :bouncefire:.

Btw, the side license plate is not allowed here. We're lucky already, in some european countries it is mandatory that their bike license plate can be seen from the moon.

And dammit, i agree with you, where are the pictures dudes!!!

Haha Garyhwk I know exactly wat u mean, haven't ridden for 11 years and woke up one day and said I jus need to ride again and got myself a 2nd hand 2004 1200R. Have had it for a month now and love the ride like hell! Always looking forward to any opportunity to ride it. But due to work and family commitments it hasn't been often enough tho.:(

I'm sure u'll not regret getting a harley.:)

I haven't customised much yet, doing it as I go along. Now I jus want to enjoy riding it first :)

grey area...some say not legal, well here something from LTA guidelines...

"blah blah blah...The vehicle licence plate shall be exhibited at the front and at the back of the motor vehicle not more than one metre from the ground in a vertical position so that every letter or figure of the vehicle licence plate is easily distinguishable. No other figures or letters and no design advertisement or ornamentation shall be placed near the identification mark on the vehicle licence plate in such a manner as to render it more difficult to read or distinguish when the vehicle is in motion....blah blah blah"

more from where the above came from..

LTA website

Ok .. so it is legal! Cause it's at the rear, in a vertical position, and not more than 1m above ground! Thanks for digging out this piece of info :D

You know why I'm asking? Cos the Iron comes with a side-mounted no. plate in the US but the International model (which happens to be the one we have in Singapore) has the no. plate mounted below the rear fender. That defeats the purpose of a chopped rear fender!! Duh!! Buy a bike because it looks nice with a chopped fender only to find out that they add an ugly piece os plastic to extend the rear fender.

So ugly ...... :( :( :(

But, any idea roughly how much it costs for a side-mounting with light shining down the no. plate? If it costs a few hundred bucks then forget abt it .. I rather top up $$ and get exhausts or a 2-up seat. Went thru the HD catalog but they don't seem to have this item.

Oh my gosh! So you were the guy that was eyeing on the September Iron shipment!!  I happened to be on leave on that Friday and I went down to the dealership to make the booking :p Anyway it could be a blessing in disguise for you :)

Hey I think this 10yrs 11yrs no riding thing happens to all bikers. My bro in law is one of them. He got itchy after seeing my bikes and then he came back to riding again.

Wah you will get your bike very soon man!! Don't forget to post pictures!!

Haha yah I've seen some video on youtube and I can see their huge number plates with huge alphabets. But they no need to have a number plate at the front.

Your story is very interesting :D

Wah Snail riding a 1200R! What an irony! Hehe :D

I guess I won't be rushing to customise my ride too. Just ride it as stock for awhile. At least I will be able to tell the difference and appreciate the upgrades. I don't think I will feel any difference if I customise the bike even before I get to really ride it and learn about it :)

damn it looks ugly:giddy:

I won't exactly say the new matt black XR1200 is ugly. It looks like one of those bikes the bad guys (in all black gear) in an italian movie would use to chase down the good guys. What's ugly though is the gauge. The tachometer looks like it sprouted a tumour :faint:

I'm sure i'll enjoy it as much as you, Snail! Good for us! Woohoo! Thats four sportsters and counting...(including Reckless' cool blue until he gets it sold that is. Good luck on your sale Reckless). We must really get together...sportsters, big twin, ugly, nice, whatever...:thumb:...and then we poison each other with upgrades...:D

Dude you better confirm this with LTA before you do it. Daniel from HD said that it is not allowed and reading the text from LTA, it does say "..at the back of the motor vehicle..." and technically where you want it is at the side of the bike albeit facing the rear.

Check out this scenario, if you put the plate on the left side of your bike and your bike is the getaway vehicle for a bank robbery and you park the bike with the right side facing the bank. You finish robbing the bank, you dash out, hop on the bike as a pillion, tap the standby rider and he zooms off and just 2 meters ahead he makes a sharp right turn. So when witnesses standing just outside the bank are interviewed by the police and they are asked "what's the bike number?"...nobody will know because all witnesses standing to the right of the bike would not be able to see the number plate.

This could be a reason against side-mounted plate...and no, i'm not from the TP or police... Better double-double confirm with LTA.

side mounted plate, confirm 100% sign and chop, NOT ALLOWED.

sorry to disappoint Yohji.

but then a lot of things are also not allowed.....heh

I guess you'll very soon find out that keeping the harley stock is probably the toughest thing to do...

Anyway, does anyone here uses fork brace for the HD? Thinking of getting a superbrace but wondering if at $200 USD, is it worth the dough?

Would appreciate any feedbacks from riders who've used fork brace on their ride... :)

there was a Nightster parked next to my bike today. i sat on it for the first time (i didnt scratch it) and found the seat quite low but because it is a mid mounted foot peg, the riding position felt funny with my knees raised quite high. I am not that tall so wondering if riding a sportster is uncomfortable for anyone above a certain height... just wondering...

I have the fork brace. Cant say I can tell any difference. Still have high speed wobbles (over 130 km) and around long sweeping turns.

I ride the FXDC and it has the 49mm forks, so I have read that fork brace doesnt do much for them. Makes a difference if have smaller diameter forks.

Looks good in any case!

But, any idea roughly how much it costs for a side-mounting with light shining down the no. plate?

dealer is selling it at around $450 excluding installation

Ive been seeing more of those bikes with 2 wheels up front and 1 in the back. Mostly used by couriers. But market for HD Trikes in Singapore seems limited. Would prob still need to the Class 2 license right?

i dont have an answer for that, most probably they wont even allow it to be imported into sg in the first place...if they do i think they will treat it as car and with car COE etc etc

Yah very difficult thing. Most pple would have already ordered tons of stuff to be ready to put on the bike as soon as it rolls off the showroom. But my pockets are not so deep. So I got no choice but to keep it stock for awhile :D

I think the 1st upgrades I would consider is either a 2-up seat or slip-ons.

Wah bro, you go and sit on pple's bike. Luckily I always cover my bike (whenever possible). Cause I don't like pple sitting my my bike w/o my permission.

I think the Nightster, Iron and 883 Low, have the same seat height and mid-controls. Very low. Good for pple with short legs like me :D

FWAH!!! $450!!! Made of carbon fibre and titanium is it??? Forget it. Thanks for the information though :)

Having said that, I must say that the sportster has its own rudimentary appeal. It's what motorcycle was meant to be from the beginning in terms of form. I hope too keep my sportster, being my first harley and all, for posterity if i do eventually get a big twin in future...hopefully the cb;).

So if that's the way HD reel in customers, i guess they've got it right :thumb:
