Any of u guys suffer this intermittent ticking sound from the front of the bike.. Jus started hearing it. Am riding a 08 model.. Read so many forum but dun quite get the answer...help me!!! Is it the exhaust valves???

been doing some reading the past few weeks and it seems like, unless yamaha does some major upgrading in terms of features to the FJR, i might just decide to defect to the kawa conc next year. have to agree that for the amount of money on the FJR, it's still quite basic.

 

the conc was voted top sports-tourer for 2010, and got a much higher rating and feedback than the FJR. plus, there's also the latest buzz around the new adv class of bikes, namely the super tenere and multistrada. unfortunately, im not an adv fan (though the strada is definitely tempting!), so unless the price of the FJR drops, or the features upped, im leaning more towards the conc.

I ain't no mechanic, so I may be wrong.

 

It may be the timing chain and/or cam tensioner. Quite a common problem for a Fabulous-Joy-Ride.

 

Yes, Mr cstay66 is right. Bring it down to your mechanic, trust he can help.

 

If need to change, pls change both timing chain and the cam tensioner at the same time...

yeah man..the cam tensioner on the right side of your engine..can get at auto machinery, IF you can do on your own..otherwise, mototiam it is...

Thanks guys for the advice... Wat I recall is if the ticking sound is from the right side it might be cam tensioner but if it's from the left side it could be the exhaust valve guides worn out.. Anyway wat other symptoms can be noticed if it's is a cam tensioner problem???

If its intermittent, chances are its the timing chain.

 

I had mine replaced by meng tong but it came back really fast. Den i replaced it once again at HL and it nv came back till now.

 

Not saying MT isnt good but thats what i experienced.

 

Btw, if you wanna go HL, dont buy your own parts, Its their policy.

Meng Tong, the very famous Goldwing whisperer. Think he's working for sporting motors at Autobay@KakiBukit.

 

Symptom is like a intermittent "kiak kiak" sound during idling. I wont risk it from there. A fellow forumner had a snapped chain and it killed the valves.

 

I did a few other servicing so cant rmb the price. But HL charged $80-$150 depending on how bad your timing is off excluding parts. Tensioner i think $70, chain $58 from AM but rmb, if you plan to let HL do, you cant bring your own parts, by right and parts will cost about 15% more if you get from HL. However, Jabar from HL is experienced and according to him, they seldom replace chain cuz its usually not the cause.

Plz help me out coz I went hlcorp yesterday, the chief mechanic( a guy in glasses) said no need any repair as he said it not the tensioner and all after hearing the engine,, he said it's rare for a 08 model... I told him I'll be heading to Thailand coming October and he said no problem, ur bike is in good condition... So maybe I'm paranoid about the noises or wat..???

if you need second opinion. Bring it to ah tak from tachyon motor besides KTM Dirtwheel. Tell him you are ah yean friend. He will look into the bike issues. ^_^

Saw a few pages back abt modifications to the side boxes , maybe can check it out , it involves securing a retaining pin at the mounting pt.
