Hi guys, I've been a passive reader of this forum. Obviously I own an excellent FJR like the crew here. But I have a question to ask. Did anyone ever change/repair their magneto coil before? And roughly at what km did you change? Or worst, what was the mileage when the coil breaks down? I know for sure R1 & Fazer 1000 are fond having their coil broken involving the rectifier also. So I hope the expert crew here can enlighten me any of coil issues or when I should change it.

 

Letting my bike go to a relative. So he wants to restore the bike to it's glorious days but I told him I took care of it religiously changing the EO and other wear & tear parts, i.e steering & wheel bearings, coolant, air filter, ignition unit, etc. Hope you guys can guide me on this.

I tried to start my bike today after it sitting for 2 weeks, and it looks like I have a flat battery. The gauges come alive as usual but when I press the starter, the engine cranks a few times, then there's only a clicking. Eventually (after 4-5 tries) pressing the starter resulted in only clicking. I guess it's clear my battery is flat?

 

Interestingly, last summer I left the bike sitting for ~6 weeks. That time the engine protested when starting, but eventually did on the first try. Since then, I noticed the bike had trouble starting after shorter breaks (say, 2 or 3 weeks) but did always start. Around the same time I stopped commuting on the bike to work, only riding on weekends. So the battery is becoming less reliable. Is it just age, or can it also be related to my riding pattern?

 

Also, should I replace the battery or get it charged? Maybe I need to get a trickle charger for when I'm away for longer?

how old is your bike?

 

get a battery checked and charged first, then replaced if the problem persists.

if you plan to let your bike hibernate for a month, i suggest just disconnecting the battery.

 

if u ride long distances then it charges your battery as you ride.

 

if you rarely ride and rarely travel far, then i suggest that you sell the bike instead.

My previous 3 batteries all lasted approx 2 yrs.... How old is your battery?

 

But riding only on weekends and for short distances do add to the rate of deterioration of the batt...

 

If you dont mind the removing and installing of the batt, getting a charger does help....

 

On the question of whether to replace the batt or not, depends again on the age.... If more than 1 yr i think you can have it replaced... But do note that the same thing is gonna happen to your new batt... Also make sure there are no current leakage from whatever aftermarket components you have installed...

Wah, thats kindof extreme.....

 

that's what i did with my previous bike, it made no sense to keep changing and charging the battery when i rarely use it and when i wanna use it, it dies on me.

 

its like adding unecessary inconveniences into your life for a vehicle that you are not gonna touch that often.

 

but that's my take on maintaining a vehicle. i'm sure there are people who are willing to keep a vehicle just to use it once in a while.
