Hello bros!

I've passed my tp March this year and intending to get my first bike this December.

I followed this website for almost a year and have seen lots of threads regarding bikes, maintenance, fc, where to go service and deciding back and forth which bike to buy. But not much about a thread on safety riding tips for road noobs.

I have been driving for the past 3 years and it scared the **** out of me when 2b bikes just zoom passed me and cut into my lane when they're just a meter or 2 away from my car.

Are there any tips to be shared by bros for beginners or do riders will learn as they gain more experience?

To get the ball rolling,

1) Will riding a kup/fz16/runner and a flip up helmet be a gd idea? Ive heard some people mentioned that it will restrict head movements for beginners which is not good?

2) Loud pipes better for class 2b?

Thanks in advance bros!

For me, 1st thing when u get ur bike, ride e bike around ur area first where u are familiar with e roads. Preferably ride it when traffic is light. Get a feel of ur bike. Things like how e pick up is like, front and rear brakes.and get used to e signal light switch. Biting point and all.

As for riding gears, totally up to you but i wld recommend at least gloves, jeans and covered shoes.

Get used to e bike first then after that can talk abt mods to ur bike.

Congrats for passing and have fun searching for ur bike! :)

1) invest in a good quality flip-up or full face that is lightweight on your head (and one that fits your head shape), and the movement will not be restrictive. i suggest the hjc r-pha max from motoworld at 400++ (i think). you'd still need some getting used to if you've only been wearing open face, but after awhile you would seriously feel nervous and 'naked' if you go back to open face.

2) in what way are loud pipes 'better for class 2b'?! have you been following those mistaken "loud pipes save lives" movement? because these bikers are mistaken.

no matter your speed, no matter how loud, sound always travels at the speed of sound. if a bike approaches your car from any direction, how soon (or how late) you hear the approaching bike depends on how fast the bike is going relative to how fast you are going.

dun believe me? since you driver, do a simple experiment: every time you drive, try to hear bikes approaching you from behind, and see exactly when you hear it and then the bike overtakes. when you actually do this, you will realize that you always hear the bike only when it is practically beside your car at the last minute. some pipes loud some pipes soft, but the exact moment you hear the bike is nearly always when it is right beside you. loud pipes do NOT give drivers early warning of your approach.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

Loud pipes may actually let drivers hear you sooner.

For sure they'll damn well let them hear you clearer and distinctly from the rest of the humdrum traffic noises.

Ever heard the diff between a stock pipe and an illegal can with the baffles removed?

2) you're welcome to try the experiment i mentioned; sit in a moving car and try to spot the exact moment you hear a bike as it overtakes, and you'll find that all the time, you hear it only when it is practically beside the car, regardless how loud.

and if you still believe in "loud pipes save lives", more power to you, nothing else i have to say.

@ singlet

thanks bro! for one year i've been searching and still searching. haha!

@ mechwira

will definitely invest in a flip up helmet.

and yeap. as a driver, i only hear them when they're almost next to me.

i agree that loud pipes do not give a driver of an approach but does it give a driver an additional "sense" for your presence?

in Singapore we know lah got a lot of good and bad drivers/riders. some never check blindspot when changing lanes or when turning they only look at oncoming traffic they won't notice you beside them. you can see that there are cars on the roads that are oblivious to bikes that are close to them(normal street wise not expressway).

Thanks for the advice! (:

you're a driver, you answer this question yourself. have you ever felt the presence of a bike approaching from behind such that you cant/dont see him but you 'know' theres a biker there because of his loud exhaust?

i know my own answer as driver. big fat no. a driver MUST spend the effort to look, and a biker MUST make himself visible and not creep into blind spots unnecessarily. if i 'sense' a bike just outside my vision, it is because i always glance rear and side while i drive and i already spot the bike entering my blind spot from behind and then i dun see him entering my forward vision; i know for some reason he is in my blind spot and its annoying when he stays there.

loud pipes do nothing other than annoy the hell out of me when i suddenly hear him when he is right beside me and too late to evade.

The article makes a good point. But the question remains: Why do you actually notice or actually hear a Hayabusa with loud pipes once they're in your blindspot, but not an STX or Honda Wave? It could mean the difference between me sideswiping him if I didnt turn my head before I lane change.

So in a way, having something that sounds is better than having something silent. I know this because I notice the sound of a loud car or bike as it passes by me, even when I'm driving

The first and most important safety tip is your riding gear. Get some gloves, full face helmet, riding jacket with pads etc etc. In case of accidents, bike parts can be replaced. Our body parts cannot be replaced.

Don't care about what other riders think of your gear. They find it funny or what just ignore. Only got 1 life to enjoy riding so treasure it. :D

Luxury cars are nowadays equipped with good sound proofing details.

So its really up to you to argue and decide on the loud pipe issue. I personally finds loud pipe annoying. There is no considerations for your neighbourhood, for their peace of mind and babies, children and adult sleeping. And even in enclosed underground carpark, the rider cannot muffle the loud pipes and frankly, I laugh more often then not, when I hear crashing of such loud pipes bikes.

To the TS.

Wear whatever the frak you wanna wear. It's your skin.

Full-face, Flip-face, armored jacket. They give you good protection from the road.

And they actually look good on an FZ or Runner.

Looks weird on a Wave? Well, it doesn't matter what ppl say. What matters is what you think.

Even you decide to forgo safety and wear flip-flops, T-shirts and shorts, and a half-cap, it's your call too.

Your body, your life. You take responsibility for yourself. Your choice.

As for loud pipes, my stand is to go for it if you're into loud pipes. Just make sure it's LTA certified if you don't want any hassle.

I'd go for the loudest road legal pipe, nevermind whatever the hell people think.

If you're worried about being inconsiderate at night, just use low revs when you come back late. Keep it in a gear or two higher than what you would normally ride with and try to coast more.

Enjoy the sound of your exhaust especially in tunnels and underground carparks when you set off car alarms. LOL. I love it.

If they don't see you, well at least they can hear you. Debunked my ass, my loud piped saved me more than I can count. One second can make the difference.

Actually the article is pretty factual. But being heard when not seen, especially when lane splitting, is better than not being heard and seen at all. If my pipe annoys you, then it's all good. Because it means you've fcuking heard and noticed me! ROFL... ;)

Sure as hell beats you being having a pleasant day and then sideswiping me. :p

Works wonders with pedestrians, they think you're some kind of fierce biker, so they stop let you through or they dash across quickly and save u time. Well at least they don't dash when they're right in front of you because they didn't look because they couldn't hear you.

As far as the neighbours are concerned, there will always be haters, some people have nothing better to do but comprain, they comprain on everything from fixing your bike under the void deck to wedding processions, not because its annoying, just because they have nothing better to do, where I live, you used to be able to hear the train every now and then, louder than your average bike with aftermarket endcan revving but you can't saman the train ma, life still goes on. Likewise with National Day jets.
