As usual, this happened this afternoon in Brisbane

Was leaving the city centre after doing my errands in town and was heading home. At William St, turning to the highway, there're 2 lanes. One going to the northern suburbs, the other is going south (which is where I'm headed). I was on the lane going to south. Next lane is a bus.

When the lights changed green, we moved off at the same time. The bus changed lane into my lane right after the turn! I knew something was wrong, so I slowed down and soon, the bus cut where I would have been if I didn't slow down! I let the bus move off before merging with the peak hour traffic going south.

I travelled about 4.5 km on the highway ( I know because I'm using Google Maps to calculate the distance) when the bike ran out of fuel! Signs were obvious. Lack of power. So I slowed down and tried to change the fuel tap from On to Reserve but no avail. So I stopped at an emergency bay. From there, I tried to restart the bike but it didn't successfully start. I know it's not the battery because I can see from the voltmeter that the alternator is still charging. So I called for help on the emergency phone but the phone is spoilt. I can't hear anything.

I called a couple of friends using my mobile but they were interstate. So I tried to call other road assistance but they didn't want to help unless I buy their membership, which I felt isn't worth the price (nearly A$200!). I decided to walk along with the traffic to the next exit but stopped almost halfway when I saw that the bus lane from the busway merged into the highway. I wanted to go that way because I remember there's a Shell petrol station around there.

I turned back and walked past my bike and up along the highway for about 200m until I came to another emergency bay! This time, the phone works. I managed to get to the operator and explained what happened. They sent the tow truck to me as I walked back to the bike.

Can see my bike in the background?

There! Against the wall.

Tow truck arrived about 10 minutes after I reached my bike and gave me premium fuel for A$10. It's a lot cheaper than paying for the membership for road assistance, I tell you that! From there, I rode off when the tow truck blocked the oncoming traffic for me and I was off on to my merry way before the sun set.

Lol you got topup before you move?

In Singapore you will be fine for running out of fuel on a highway. :)

Fine as in pay extra money. And they will only tow to out of the expressway for u. All have to make your own way to petrol station.

And the tow truck won't be for motor bike type this if any damages to the bike is your own cost as its your own fault for running out of fuel. This in Singapore even if this happen, so not call the emas. Better to call the private tow service

I'm so glad I didn't get this problem in Singapore. I never knew that. Thankfully, all the bikes I had in Sg, the reserve switch works.

Lol you got topup before you move?

Before moving back to the highway yes. Regrettably, 2 days before this incident, I could have top up, but I didn't. :nono: Big mistake.

Then you can tell them you already called tow truck...

they will still tell you to contact the tow truck to pick your bike up at the nearest highway.

all they need to cite is "the minute longer you're on the shoulder, the higher the risk".

dont think you can do anything about it though.

mAYBE his bike is about to die off so must rev harder to prevent from dying. i know of many old bikes 20 or so yrs old, while idling suddenly just dies off. my previous old 20 plus yrs Nissan Datsun was like that, while moving it was ok but once reach a stop , slowly , slowly it stopped. i met so many incidence of old riders doing like AND always thought that they were trying to irritate me. but now i think otherwise

He just need to hold the throttle m maintain a certain rpm. No need to keep on reving. Doesnt help to prevent the bike from dying.

nice bike you have...

Thanks, but I won't be holding it for long. It's not only due to the no fuel warning, but other reasons that I won't mention for now....

I still prefer your VTX LOL

Ignore only. Do not take these things to heart. There are many like these. Some big bikes and some small bikes. Its always the rider and not the bike. As long as your safety is not compromised just ignore. ;)

Shall share something interesting which happened yesterday. Was travelling straight and noticed a car was about to turn left on my right and driver had her head turned only to her right. Either I really e-braked which is not possible as it would mean I will b stationary for the car to bang or I swerved a little to my left. Did the latter and sped off stopping at the traffic ahead. I managed to squeeze in a tap of the horn. Then driver quickly changed to the left lane to avoid me to have visibility of it hoping that I thought she went another way. Later on she changed back to the lane I am in. The rear of the car was in the left lane and the front was in the right. Since the light is still red I had enough time to 'teow' (borrow this word from you know who you are) her. As expected she just looked everywhere else but my direction. Not even a gesture of sorry.

Maybe she didn't want to look in your direction to cause misunderstanding that she's "staring" at u... My parents always taught me that it's rude to stare... Peace :)

You may try this Sports HD DV SJ1000 cam. It costs about $100. It is water resistant 30m under water with a transparent cover. I have been using it on my bike and it comes with multiple mounts for cars, clip on for jogging, motorcycle mounts for handle bars and helmets too. The video is very clear. It is a 1 year warranty. Can get it from JML synerGIZ in Macpherson Road.

Yes, if for short travelling in Sg 2.5hrs will be more than sufficient. I plug it to the usb port on my bike for long distant riding.

At least you had time to see what she was doing.

Today, a car from behind tried to force me out of my lane. I refused to bulge and naturally the fella went to the front of me and waited at the lights with everyone else. I horned as long as I could and gestured with my free arm. If I wasn't working, I'll follow him and ask what's his problem. He can see me and yet want to do such nonsense. No doubt I'm riding small bike, but in the end, we still queue at the back with everyone at the traffic lights. Makes no difference if either of us is in front.

It's such drivers that makes us Asians as bad drivers. Yes, that driver is an Asian. I can tell from his facial features. Australian trained drivers won't do such things, especially to someone who might be delivering their mail to them.

Another wet wet day....going public. :sian:
Still rode to work even though it was raining. Guess I have accepted that as a rider I will always be at the mercy of nature. It is weird but I feel much more alive when raindrops are falling on my helmet and face. As long as its not those super heavy rain.
