I got a female friend just went for the assesment test yesterday, they told her if she is selected, they will call her for the interview, So how long u waited for your interview?

Friday I went for assesment. Monday I recieved an email saying i was selected for interview on friday within the same week. Quite fast actually.

After interview, they told me I was selected to attend the job preview.

But some other candidates will attend job preview first before the interview.

Then 2.5 months waited for medical letter to come. They missed out one number from the unit number i lived in. Untill the vital coordinator called and verified my address again.

Two weeks after the medical checkup, vital will inform you via email and sms whether you have been accepted or not.

Some of us don't mind the sacrifice of donning a uniform in order to secure higher starting wages and the security of actually having a government job. It's all choices that people make in order to live. This is survival. If you have different objectives or desires and a government uniformed job is not for you, then by all means stay clear of the recruitment.

I have this to say: Someone has to do the job. If everyone were to be like-minded and stay clear of these uniformed jobs, who's going to respond when you call 999? Or when a crime happens to you or a loved one? Or what if our penal system is corrupt and convicts can secure early pardons or releases with payment of a certain sum of money? Our society will be the worse for wear.

Good post!

Some of us really need to explore. What we are really good at. What are our passion. My current job scope makes me feel unhappy. Do I get anything in return by repairing/troubleshooting the equipment and reduce the uptime? No not at all. I don't feel the sense of achievement. Machine have no feelings, it's too mechanical. The same thing repeat all over and over again. What have I learn doing these three years? Does it make me wiser as a person? Technically yes but but as a person no.

Simple things in life is the hardest thing to do. Risk is the self key to improvement.

I totally agree with you, i understand how u feel. Sometime people look for a job because of high pay, but doesnt mean high pay u can be happy. Sometime u think back is there a satisfaction in your job?

Every job have its challenge, it just how u overcome it and being appreciated for the hard work u had done. Every job also got its own ****, even if you yourself is your own boss, just only if it is direct or indirectly related to u.

Hi..

Anybody knows how's the shift and off days in Prisons??

I understand there's 2 types.

Type 1 (AM-7am to 3pm and PM-12pm to 8pm) But how the rotation? Work 3 days AM then 3 days PM then 1 day off???

Type 2 (12hrs shift. 7pm to 7am) Work 2 nights...off 2 nights??? correct?

Anyone can confirm???? Thanks.

Spunk: Earlier posts in this thread will net you the information you seek. Spend a few minutes scrolling back and digest what is already there.

About job satisfaction. When I was managing prisoners I did not get to see much change in them in the sense that those I managed were in there for the long run. The few who did get released under my watch, returned to the system. This, I attributed to the fact that most of them were heavily involved in the underworld (secret societies) and the peer pressure that came with their involvement. Whereas, I have many other friends who manage shorter-sentence prisoners who received thank-you cards and compliments for helping them tide through this rough period of imprisonment.

Here's a point to ponder. Why do these people commit crimes? Mostly out of desperation. These are of course the crimes against property, not crimes against persons. Most of the offenders do not have high education and hence will not be able to secure a highly-paid job to meet their expenses. When they do not have the cash flow to meet their needs and wants, they turn to crime. You walk into a lift and see an old lady with a gold chain around her neck. Most of us will think nothing of it but some others might see an opportunity to make a quick buck.

Hi desewer,

I like to know whether officers are required to report back to work on a public holiday example christmas day. Do we get paid accordingly since it's a holiday.

Thanks.

let me tell u this...

i'll go easy on u

type 2: only if u r on nite duty then u will be working this shift.

nite duty will be btw 6mths to 1 year straight.

let me correct ur type 1.

AM Shift: 7:00-3:00 (most institutions) or 7:15 to 3:15

the above timing only applicable on MONS - THURSDAYS

if FRI - SUN (am shift) - 7:00 to 1.30 or 7:15 to 1:45

PM shift: 12:00 to 7:00 (most institutions) or 12:45 to 8:00

the above timing only applicable on MONS - FRIDAYS

if SAT - SUN (pm shift) - 1:00 to 8:00

U GET ONLY 1 OFF DAY A WEEK IF YOU AM/PM SHIFT. (THAT IS FINAL)

but now, SOME institutions are doing this.

eg: this week, u work mon to friday am/pm. saturday u work 12hours and sunday ur off day. MEANING, next week u will get sat n sun off. then the following week will be back to usual.

off days only fall on either friday, sat or sunday.

some institution only sat n sun.

there is NO SUCH THING as getting paid EXTRA when working on a public holiday.

it goes like this,

if u r a muslim.. u will defiinately get 1st day hari raya off.

if u r a buddhist.. u will definately get 1st CNY off.

if u r a hindu... u will definately get off on deepavali.

if u r a christian.. u will definately get off on christmas.

lets say i am a muslim,

i wont be working on 1st day hari raya.

but other public holidays, if it does not fall on my off day, of course I will have to work unless I am granted to enjoy PH which most of the time I wont.

be it national day, labour day watever day. still work

just that u will get OIL (off in lieu ) or the days that u work on public holidays.

I think depend on ur schedule , they will give u time off.

it does not depend on schedule.

it depends on the quota. only 15% of your total institution man power strength can be away for normal working days.

the 15% is inclusive of those going on course, vacation leave and medical leave.

if it is below 15%, u will be granted your OIL(off in lieu) when u ask permission for it.

OIL can only be granted on MON - THUR.

FRIs - SUNs are not given unless on urgent matters due to low manpower as it falls on off days.

Wah FOS really had a lot to contribute... anyway, I believe she stands corrected on some issues.

The 12hrs shift on weekends applies only to institutions which practise "creative detailing" as I like to call it. There are pros and cons to this type of deployment, which I shall not elaborate here.

Additionally, because Prisons is part of the Home Affairs Uniformed Services (HUS), we don't get paid monetarily for working on scheduled holidays. Instead, we are granted days off-in-lieu, or OIL for short. If you happen to be working on public holidays, etc, you will be given a day's OIL. If you are called-in to work on your scheduled day off, e.g. your once-a-week day off and your colleague *bun* MC, so you have to report in. This will also net you a day's OIL.

Once you complete training most likely will be day shift for a year or two. After that then will be considered for night shift for 6mth to 12 mths. I've been working for 6yrs+ and no night shift to date.

Desewer,

I read your previous post that you currently studying part time 3 times a week.

How did you manage to get time off to persue your studies?

Please advice.

Posted

I applied lah. Once the dept approved my studies, I asked for office hours. They're not obliged to accommodate your personal study plans, but if you work long enough and your bosses know you well enough, they will try to accommodate the time. I'm doing staff work now. No more operations. Hence, my working hours are super regular 5 days a week.

If you're a new entrant and you immediately request for regular hours in order to pursue your studies, chances are you'll get turned down.

Ok thank you brother. Then most likely will have to postpone further studies. Looking forward to be part of Captains Of Lives.

Any more advice for a noob like me?

Can i ask those in the prison service, is there a need to pass mathematics at 'O' level standard eventhough the certificate used to apply is a Higher Nitec cert?

Im asking because my friend applied online recently but got a reply from the prison service that he was rejected, although no reasons were given. When he called up the recruitment hotline, they asked his about his 'O' level results and deduced that since he failed his math, he didnt qualify.

On the prison webby, it only states "And to be a Prison Officer, you must have at least 5 GCE 'O' level credits. You must be medically fit with no colour blindness and have completed National Service for male Singaporeans." There is no mention of needing a pass in math. Can any one already in the force clarify?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's a policy only within the Prisons Dept. I believe it's more of a Ministry level policy. Try applying for SPF, SCDF or CNB and chances are they'll still require you to pass your O-Level maths. The 5 O-Level passes include English and maths, so if you don't have these, you could possible retake your O's?

On the webby, the information is quite basic IMO. There is more stuff not mentioned, for example, BMI ratio, etc that you will need to be within the stipulated figures before they accept you in. When I first applied back in 2002 I was told to lose weight because my BMI was over the limit. Standard lah, this one. Which organisation wanna take in fatties or skinnies?
