guys.. i wanna warn u all if u like goin at high speed.. beware of tankslaps.. cos i juz kena one last nite..

i was on my way back from kulai wif a bunch of frens and on a certain long straight road i was tryin to see wat kind of speed my 06 r6 can hit.. full prone wif throttle twisted as far as my balls allowed me.. then.. it hit me..

out of nowhere my handlebars start to wobble.. not vibrate but wobble.. left right left right.. TANK SLAP AH~~~! @#^%%^#^%#@%@#!!!! i had a prior experience wif tankslappin b4 and i ended up kissing the tarmac at 170km/h.. i panicked and my mind went blank.. i gripped the bike wif my legs and held on to the handlebar.. i tot i was goin down for sure cos tat was wat happened the last time..

somehow.. the bike though wobbling managed to keep itself upright.. i suppose tat was due to the forward inertia.. lucky for me the bike managed to regain composure and i didnt have to french the floor again..

the weirdest thing is after the bike is ok.. i tried applyin the front brakes and it didnt worked.. the lever was totally soft wif no resistance.. damn.. wats wrong.. anyway after a few tries the brakes somehow came back.. but it felt weird.. like someone adjusted my lever to the maximum distance away from my handle bar..

i finally arrived at gp esso whr i bumped into hamsterz.. he told me he experienced the same brake thingy when he got into a tankslap last time.. anyone here experienced the same thing ?

anyway i have to point out a few things which i think helped me survived dis tankslap.. 1st is no matter wat.. dun fight it.. the last time i went down is becos i tried to use brute strength to sort out the wobbling and i lost control.. 2nd.. grip ur tank as tight as u can and juz hold on the handlebar.. the bike wil sort out the tankslap on its own..

after the tankslap i realli lost my confidence.. i always felt dis bike was realli sensitive.. now its confirmed..

so anyone wanna order steering damper ? i think tats the onli SURE way to prevent another tankslap.. currently i'm leaning more towards scotts.. looks like good stuff

I've experienced tank slap on my previous bike (ZX-7R) as well. Its fuel was almost empty, doing 220 km/h, crested one of those NSH highway rise (whenever you have a bridge over some streams or somethin) and handlebar just suddenly swung into left & right oscillations once the front wheel came back down. Could hear a short screeching sound from the tire. Grabbed hold of the handlebar tight with all my strength and luckily it soon straightens out.

Things to note:

1) Was doing 250 km/h a while back before tank slap, but no problem ... guess when fuel is almost empty & the front of the bike goes light, its better not to speed over bumps.

2) I did not have a steering damper on. Buy one!

3) Grip the bike tight at high speeds - with tighs, torso and even elbows.

4) Upon tank slap, IMHO, grab handlebars tight (as opposed to what Wayang proposed) to stablize the wobble ... think about it, isn't this what the steering damper is supposed to do anyway? Some correct me if I'm wrong.

5) Even before you speed, get your suspension sorted out first!

Good luck!

safest way actuallie is to let go of de handle bar.. but it sounds scary.. so just relax de handle bar.. fast bikes wanna go straight. it will return to normal.. saw a video on a harley doin a demo.. self made tank slap and freehand. bikes goes back normal. post it up when i find it..

holding it tight makes it worse.. de damper stiffens up the handlebar so its harder to turn left and right which in turns makes de handle more stable in a sense..

during a tank slap the damper does not stop the handle bar shaking. its simple makes it harder to shake.. its makes the bar hard to go left when its goin left and hard to go right when goin right.. ur hands cant do that.

Hello guys. am about to get a 05-R6 soon after i sell off my bike.

i'd like to enquire

1) Anyone knows what are the difference between the 06-R6 and the 05-R6 apart from the bore size?

2) What are the common problems? (Eg. honda has rectifier, battery, coil problem. etc...)

3) Also, how come with the new R6 model out, there is still this R6 S-model?

4) Lastly, what is tankslap uh? =p sheesh... dunno what this is... only happen to big bikes uh? don't think i experience b4 on my cbr400...

Thank you for time taken to assist... hope to sell off my bike soon and join u guys on outings.

Even a bike mag stated to relax up your arms on a highside to let the bike settle in..holding the handlebars harder will only worsen the highside tillthe bike spits u out.

Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want. It is the realisation of how much you already have.

glad you are ok... had the same exact tank slap on the 2nd day of bike collection. Freaked out big time. My mother/father/good fren etc..etc flashed through my head. Boy those movie scenes are real in this sense man!!

I purposely went past 220kmh, with t-shirt & soft pants, over the crest (same place as R6ex mentioned) to test out the high speed comp capabilites. Upon impact, it oscillates with increasing magnitude till i heard multiple screechings from the front tires in the same frequency as the slap frequency. which ended up thumb hitting the tank. Can't do much as it is already throwing my body left n right.. can't even thigh grab tank, or elbows lock knees. Basically, after auto close throttle, it settled back slowly. Brakes didn't work also in the first pull of the levers in the bend, so kanah gravel on the right just beside the barrier. slide slide.. heng no buang.. Ended up sitting by the road for 20~30mins to catch back my mind, & rode like 80kmh to perling.

At that time, I am between 58~60kg. suspension is stock and not touched. (bad bad me... )

So.... to add on to Wayang's info,

1. take the R6 speed up step by step.

2. get ur suspension tweaked for ur weight n riding style.

3. if kanah tank slap, kiap ur tank tight, but NOT the handlebars. Its not saying that trying to counter the forces is wrong. But the thing is, at the tank slap's high frequency, there is no gurantee the forces you apply (in order to stop/reduce the slap is exactly opp of the forces. It might just be in the same oscillating direction and end up making it worst. Ease the throttle, and either follow the slapping flow, or lock your elbows to your knees and let the bars oscillate on your "loose hands.

After sorting ride sag, comp n rebound, it's better. But some places like after GP esso to perling, 1st lane (most right) under a flyover (slight left bend) where there are "black" patches, it still wobbles along the bend at prob 180~200kmh. And I only found it out when i was riding on that lane in the day time. I can't imagine what would happen if i didn't see it at night!

oh.. by the way, no brakes is due to disc flex which pushes the caliper pistons back due to the magnitude of the slap....Just pump a few times on the levers and it should be fine.. A pointer I learnt from teepeephobe

Oh.. i am waiting reply from Scotts on my order queries. I finally managed to save some $$ after 4 mths .. argrhh...

Current price is USD409.95 i think, excluding frieght n GST. You want to join in? Grim reaper? u also on?

Ride hard & safe...

tank slaps occur in any speed from prob 50kmh up till the bikes max speed. (My was at 220kmh on 2nd link bridge, and 180kmh+ under the flyover bend with uneven ground) It depends on the the road condition (try bishan firestaion the bend on the 1st n 2nd lane at 50kmh+.. it slaps), bike's weight distribution, rake angle, suspension set up, rider's style n throttle control style, rider's weight, (my fren at 30kg in exccess of me happliy full ball my bike all the way from perling... and told me "OK leh.. not shaking what:giddy: . I can't even full ball on 5th gear straightline as it startes to oscillate somewhere in the mid of power band.) The last to bikes i rode of dry weight 215kg n 170kg at speeds of 220kmh past those 2 places i mentioned is pretty planted to the ground though..

The main reason is basically on the front weight the tires is taking. Being light has its benefits (agile, twichy, sharp and so on) and cons (tankslap). The other efforts to reduce includes, put on more rider weight  , add a radial/linear damper (significantly!), suspension setup and throttling style. Or maybe frame up the bike and dun't ride as wayang suggested hehe..

just my 2 cents worth....

Ride hard & safe...

6th minute.. typical tank example. (self created) lol.

nice clip keonni.. :thumb: actually i've seen it at the clips n motion section and tat's whr i got the idea becos of forward inertia.. the bike shld be able to recover on its own.. hopefully..

When experiencing wobbles that threaten to go out of control, ease off the throttle. That will shift weight back to the front and allow the front to sort itself out.
