Armoured Jackets - Is it practical?

  1. 1. Armoured Jackets - Is it practical?

Guys,

Would like your comments on which armoured jackets are worth buying. I am refering to those practical ones which are usable in our climate yet provide armour the elbows, shoulders, etc.

So far I've heard of Dainese, Diadora and Clover. Any recommendations?

Also, I notice few bikers wear them in Sgp. Is it because it is impractical (too hot, etc) despite the saftey, or is it just the cost. Just send me your thoughts.

I'm also wearing one. Bought from max but soft paddings. Never regretted :bounce:

coolman, how much did you pay for you G-air? Where can you get one? Is it the shop at Serangoon? I can't seem to find it though......

Yep coolman, I would like to know too! And is it hot when you stop in traffic? An btw, do you wear a full-face? Gloves?

Right now, I wear a windbreaker, full-face and gloves on top of my office wear, still manage to make it without sweating......

serious ar?

i'm also riding a ta200 but i pespire sia...

and i dun wear wind-breakers or gloves...

best part is, i take 10 to 15 mins to reach my workplace

yup, I use gloves, but not a full face in singapore. Full face I use only at Msia trips.

The G-air can be purchase at JR, serangoon road.

Address can be found at http://www.jrpl.com.sg

Bought at $280 ( without back protector)

Its black is colour, but it feels more cooler than my windbreaker previously.

I think nowadays Armour jackets are getting more cheaper, espeically those for summer use. Heard that there are some under $200.

i know some of these jackets are NOT weather proof..(those are the 200-300 range.. so expensive.. yet when it rain YOU ARE SCREWED.. got to take out ur armour and wear are non-amour raincoat.. abit silly.. when i feel rain is where we more accidents will occur..

Unless were willing to spend (380-450) for the type that is rain proof..

i was thinking, would it be possible to

(MAKE-YOUR-OWN-ARMOUR-JACKET)?

hmmm... buy a simple jacket (30-40) buy some paddings,

sew them on the jacket..

but then again... doubt if that will work..

;P

wether proof jacket are good to own, but not practical to use in Singapore with this kind of hot weather. Its too hot!!

Just ask yourself a question, does it rains everyday except the raining season?

If you can tahan wearing a rain coat under hot sunlight, then you can consider buying one of those weatherproof. and for your info, those are twice as hot as a riancoat.

What I do is , if it rains, I'll wear a raincoat over the armour jacket.

Hey guys!

I just came back from JR. I bought a Dainese G-Air riding jacket. Cost me $280 without GST and back armour (just like coolman said).

All I can say is, WOW!

When riding, it feels as if your not wearing a jacket. When you're not riding, it only feels just slightly warmer than when you're not wearing a jacket. Safety without discomfort!

The Dainese jacket is very well-made. No loose stitching, lots of useful pockets, tasteful design (I bought the all-black one). It actually looks good enough to wear out, just take out the padding and you have a cool (literally) and cool-looking jacket!

The downside is: I can barely close my box after I stuff it in there. I have a 1/2 face helmet, a full face helmet, a bike cover, a pair of gloves and a street directory in there already. After putting in the jacket, I need to force it to close. I can imagine if I put in the back armour, it'll be quite impossible to close. Looks like side panniers, here I come.

Another downer is I gotta leave for my destination earlier now. It does take awhile to put on the jacket, gloves and helmet. And when you reach there, it takes an even longer while to pack everything into the box.

To anyone thinking about getting this jacket: Go get it!

How much more can you ask for?

went down to JR today....hehe....at last....

saw the G-air....not bad i must say....but i'm considering paying a little more for better ones....the G-air doesn't seem to be able to withstand a fall....looks as though it might rip leh..........

the fella @ JR very nice....he owns the R1 and Skipper...power...

hehe....most probably would part $500 for a jacket....ouch.......

I know what you mean alvin. But for me it's good enough lah. Riding 2B scooter only.

I was very very tempted to buy the perforated leather one. Looks damn stylo, if you live in a cold country. I wore it and it didn't feel hot at all, quite comparable to the G-Air. However at $700, I would have to pluck the grass from downstairs and fry with "tau you" to eat everyday for 2 months.

Can't wait to get my side panniers so I can buy the back armour for my jacket...

yup...the fella showed me the leather too....leathers are the best for abrasion resistance....guaranteed.....but i think it needs lots of conditioners and stuff to keep it from turning brittle......

i'm riding a 2b scoot too...keke......X9.....just wanna feel safe that's all....must keep myself in 'one piece' for my future wife (haha....i don't even have a girlfriend!!!)..........

will drop by JR once more to hunt for a jacket.....the prices are :faint:

hehe...you must have spent a bomb on the jacket eh? it's money well spent....

hmm...about leather care....maybe you can try Dainese? I saw some bottles of cream or something (hope my eyes don't play tricks k?) displayed on top of the display cabinet......

i read about the leather care thing in BIKE UK......didn't really pay much attention to what it said...but i'm dead sure you need to maintain it.....

Hope this helps!!

just an advice.....

Buying a leather one gives lot of protection, but are you prepared to wear it everytime you mount your bike? This question also hinders me for a while before I got the G-air. However , after many trips to Msia that I have joined, statistic shows that 99% of them don't wear their jacket(leather or waterproof) except in NSH. Reason.....Its too HOT!!

What I want is a jacket that provides some protection at least, and I am able to use it for everyday ride, even under hot sun.

So before you buy, think carefully whether you will use it is SG or MSH...

Like what I had said earlier, put on a rain coat in hot sunlight and see if you like the feeling....

Exactly coolman!

It's not that I cannot tahan eatimg grass for 2 months, but I know myself la. If buy the leather one, I sure never wear.

Firstly, how to fold it and stuff into the box? Without the armour inserts already cannot, if with the armour worse. Even if you can fold the thing and stuff into your gigantic box, also cannot cos leather cannot fold, if not will crease and spoil. That means you gotta carry a leather jacket everywhere! Don't think I can tahan.

Second, the maintainence will drive you up the wall. Must put simi lotion lotion to maintain suppleness and all that. Like my wife like that. But at least she don't have to depend on me to apply for her...

The heat part is not too bad for the perforated $700 one. It's quite cooling cos got so many holes that can atually see through if you hold it up.

Anyway, the G-Air fits my personal needs lah.

Of course if you can tahan all the consequences that a leather comes with, go for it man!

aiyah!!! very confusing ar!!! :faint:

hehe...i like the G-air a lot too.....but what i'm worried is that it cannot withstand the 'slide' when you (choi!) lay your bike down.......the material seems to be a tad too thin leh.....feels like plastic...... :pity:

well.. its a compromise... u cant have the best of 2 worlds.. but basically those fabric armour jackets can be reasonably coolin on the move but if u stand still too long it can get abit warm n hot...

personally.. i go for fabric jacket wif build in air mesh.. i rather take the heat from the jacket den the abrasion burns from the tarmac..

as for the G-air.. well its a city jacket.. meant for city riding.. dat means dey dont expect u to go abv 50kph... so it only offers abrasion protection up to a certain extend...

That's why it's perfect for my personal needs. I drive if I have to get on the highway.

I can imagine the armour pockets giving way in a big crash and letting the armour slip out, LPPL.

Go market and coffeshop only shouldn't be that fast lah...

Guys,

Any one recommendations for non leather jackets besides the Dainese G-Air that coolman suggested? I've seen really cool looking jackets in the Clover site (http://www.clover.it). Some models are fully waterproof but, allow you to remove the water proof layer by unzipping it - pretty useful in our hot weather. Just wondering if anyone's used anything similar to that.

Hey all...

don't wanna be a spoilsport, but i heard that the Dainese G-Air is just a netting.....there's isn't any abrasion resistance.....how?

i think if we wanna save $$ can just buy some roller blading elbow and knee guards and start riding...keke.....

I agree that the G-air does not come with abrasion resistance, however it comes with shoulder and elbow amours. And I am wearing it everyday whenever I go to work in office wear. It offers far better protection and cooling as compared to my previous windbreaker.

However, if I were to buy those leather or waterproof jackets, I am very sure that I will not wear it during everday riding as its far too hot for office wear, which means I will continue with my windbreaker, and wear the jackets during trips to Msia. For me, I think it will defeat the purpose of buying a protective jacket which you don't use when you ride.

went to motorworld today and saw some jackets. all the Dainese ones were very heavy and ridiculously hot. I was practically sweating in the air-con room, let alone on the streat. there were some cool jackets from Taichi (i know, what a name), but they were soo tight. I could only were LLL size, and I'm not that big. I wonder where I can get a good range of "tropicalized" jackets, and not those $500 portable saunas.
