This link is may of interest :)

:thumb: Hope is useful.

For this cleaning phase I used fresh Castrol GTX 15w40 with a brand new OEM filter and drove for 2500km / 3months. I decided to cut open the oil filter and see for myself (seeing is believing right?) what the oil filter picks up. I am truely amazed with ARX and am convinced it is the safest cleaner to use.

There were goobs of sludge picked up between the pleats of the filter. I never imagined a vehicle using synthetic all its life will still have so much sludge buildup inside. Here are the pics. I am now on the rinse phase with fresh Castrol GTX and another fresh oil filter. I may just cut open the oil filter again and see what the rinse phase picks up.

Although this link is VW related, it provides useful information that may of interest as well :)

http://www.vw-resource.com/engine_oil.html#detergent

High-Detergent Oils

The "HD" designation used in describing motor oil stands for "High Detergent" (not Heavy Duty). High detergent oils (of which Castrol is one) help to wash the engine of crud and hold it in the oil so it gets removed with the oil change.

A caution regarding high-detergent oils - it is detrimental to change back to a detergent oil after using a non-detergent oil for a while. The non-detergent stuff will allow a build-up of crud inside the engine, and then the detergent oil will scrub it away (into the oil) so it will get super dirty super fast -- which of course is not good for your engine. VW recommended detergent oils and frequent changes so that the crud is flushed away before it becomes a wear problem.

Synthetic Oils

Synthetic oils are a waste of money in the VW engine. They are excellent oils, but they are designed for modern high-performance engines with extended oil changes -- which means the VW engine doesn't count! Synthetic oils don't get hot enough to make use of the synthetics high stability, and the long lasting properties of synthetics are wasted on a VW engine, since most of them have no filter and you HAVE to change the oil every 3000 miles to keep it clean anyway. With such frequent oil changes, the extra expense of synthetic oils is totally wasted.

In a recent survey, Castrol GTX (20W-50)

In a recent survey, Castrol GTX (20W-50) came out as the favourite. Also, Rob has a VW mechanic friend in Australia who has done a lot of testing of various oils in his own VW Bus, equipped with a good temperature gauge, over many years. He found Castrol GTX 20W-50 ran coolest of all, and that ALL oils gradually increased in running temperatures as they got older (more miles). So he used Castrol GTX 20W-50 and changed it every 2,000 miles before the temperature rise started to happen. He tried an el-cheapo oil on one occasion but found that the temperature rise happened after just a few hundred miles. Castrol GTX 20W-50 is cheap enough to buy, good enough quality, and available all over.

Ok...reading about oils can kill my brain cells especially when its getting 3 in the morning.

Ok,let me clearify myself. We can use automotive oil(Car engine oil) on our super 4s' and such but use those non-energy savings type of oil which oso is a high detergent type of oil. Synthetic oil is not truly good for our bikes, correct me if I am wrong. So, even if we change EO every 3000 miles(4828 km) to 4000 miles(6437km).It does not bring much difference to the engine unless you do short trips, then you need to change EO for every 3000 miles or 4000 miles. So if not exceeding 8000 miles(12874 km),you can start chaning EO lesser than 8000 miles unless you travel longer trips. Am I correct on that?

There is nothing more important than protecting your brain cells from damaging - If it does so, sell away yr S4 can get a better one. Super 4 is made of superb engine, and both automotive and synthetic oils are suitable for a distance of 3000 miles. These oils serves its purpose to lubricate and cooling engine parts. If sunthetic oil is not truly good, then all S4 bikes would face severe "internal damages". Seemed that no one is complaining this damage ever since the inception of S4.

Hope that more helpful "equations" are pour in to give you more good tips.

Most manuals recommend not to exceed 8,000 miles after break-in. But short-trip riding is considered severe service and the most common oil change interval is 3,000 to 4,000 miles. However, a long trip is the easiest service for the oil and going 6,000 to 8,000 miles between changes while on a cross-country ride is routine. Also, the use of synthetic oils can easily double the oil-change interval.

[*]Will changing the oil even more frequently, like every 1,000 miles, prolong the life of the engine?

Not very likely, because even at 3,000 to 4,000 miles, the oil and additives are not degraded very much. Changing more often just wastes money.

[*]Why are motorcycle oils so much more expensive than automotive oils?

This piece I dun quite comprehend. I sell my S4. U gimme Ducati 1089. I'll be willing no worries. :cheeky:
