When choosing a GPS, here's the questions to ask yourself:

- What's my budget (this will directly exclude/include models and you don;t have to waste time on models too cheap or too expensive)

- What's the battery life, and can I charge it while on the road ?

- What mounts exist for this model ? Can I easily fix one on my bike ?

- Does it have bluetooth capability (if you own a bluetooth headset), if it does, what channels/bluetooth features does it have ? If not, Is it easy to read/understand without spoken directions ?

- Is it waterproof ? If not, what options do I have (ziplock bag, waterproof casing)

- If I buy it overseas, what warranty do i get ? if something happens in 6 months, how troublesome will it be to have it replaced/repaired ?

- What maps does it support ? How are the original maps ? How often are they updated ? Can I use a free user-made map instead of the original ones ? Will it void my warranty ?

- Can I find a shop in SG selling it, and can I try it ?

If you have never used a GPS before, I suggest you install a GPS app on your phone, or borrow one from someone, even if it's a car GPS. Give it a try a few days. See if you can follow/understand/program it easily. Some riders just can't use a GPS, they don;t feel comfortable.

Some can't ride without one or hardly.

A GPS is useful when:

- You need to go places you've never been to, without the luxury of getting lost for too long (i.e day trip to MY with need to come back to SG before night fall)

- New country to visit

- Freedom of being absolutely positive you can go and reach any place with the help of the GPS

So for example if you do a trip to KL and back, and mapped your route and know which roads to take, you wouldn't need one. But if you like to get lost in SG or My and want to improve your riding times, then a GPS will be a saver.

Also, remember that GPS technology evolves fairly quickly ( a bit like any processor based hardware really), so to buy a GPS to use 2-3 times a year is not ideal and next year you might want to get a newer model (if you're that kind of geek). So often riders prefer to take a slightly more expensive model that has more functions and is more versatile / more welcoming for user-based maps, so they can keep it 3-5 years.

Hope this helps :cheer:

Looks like it has the most common features.

But do the Indo users say what maps it loads ? What type of files/maps it can load ?

That's actually the important part, once you've shortlisted the hardware.

Most big brands, especially Garmin, will provide either lifetime free upgrades for your maps (mostly for North America/Euro maps though), or cheap upgrades.

But here in S.E.A, because the mapping is not top notch, you have to rely A LOT on users mapping.

So it's crucial to be able to use user modified/enhanced/made maps because they will reflect the reality more accurately.

that ... I put you incharge to ask Prides members for more infos ... hehehee

Wow, thats really expensive. I can go to UM for checking only next sat. Till then I guess I will just putter around in 4th gear max 70 km/hr.

If I am not wrong, the labour charge for dismantling the lower engine is over 200 dolls. This does not include parts and expendable.

I've never had to do this before, but I say you should be prepared for the bike to remain in the operation room for 2 days.

Have you been redlining the engine frequently? Bad oil and high revs makes a bad combo.

Or it could be a loose bearing falling into the fifth gear, smashing it.

Decided to maybe go for a long ride on my Pulsar through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia. In a loop and come back.

Wanted to go to Morocco, but couldn;t find interesting flights (read "not too expensive"). So Pillionette said "Why not go to Thailand on the bike ?" Then we looked at the map on Google, and we ended up drawing an route as we were talking... Ended up with this 5 countries route.

We're both free for the next few weeks, so we decided why not.

I said "maybe" because I don't know yet what are the possible obstacles. Can anyone confirm that you don't need anything special to take your bike out of SG into the above 5 mentioned countries, besides your passport and the bike's papers (I own it).

nice..u buyin?..cost $284 :D

Waterproofness is still a criteria that doesn't hold much weight. I've read many reviews by owners who just ziplock-bag the Garmin and ride through storms.. good enough.

I think for a motorbike a good criteria is the battery life (although most Garmin can be charged while riding), and more importantly the mount : the mount need to allow a permanent fix, so you don't have to pocket your gps everytime you stop for petrol or a drink..

ram mount got the knob lock to prevent ppl from stealin the mount..all u gotta do is take out e gps onli..e rest can leave it on the bike

Most of the newest GPSes are touchscreen now. I don;t think manufacturers will go back to buttons, even Garmin is slowly completely changing their models into 1 button only or no buttons models.

The tomtom rider has gotten very bad reviews from bikers, I'd stay away or google it to read more. :)

you must try P200 stock shock on your P180 ..... even my GAZI now can't match my P200 stock!! .... P200 looks ugly but super strong!! ..

One of these days, i am going to bring my mule to btwo, show you guys what kind of load i usually carry, and why the makida bronze is the best shock absorbers for my needs.

4 inches of preload adjustment, and 4 position compression setting dial.

Compare that to the bajaj standard shocks, be it 180 or 200. It only has 5 preload settings, and max to min only has 1 inch of preload adjustment.

The nitrogen gas cylinder looks cool, but its retarded that it cannot be refilled. My makidas dont have a nitrogen gas canister, but i dont miss it.

Its difficult to get your hands on one, even at jb.

Saved me money ,since before i changed my shocks, i was seriously considering instaling showas from an s4.

Hopefully this week i can make time to show off. Its a cosmetic mess, though. Petrol stains on the tank, scratches everywhere. You guys might like my fabricated box brackets though.

reasons I told you guys P200 stock shocks are good enough is becos .. that the shocks that our Prides bros ride with for their touring .. and looking at their load with super giant side boxes plus rear to travel on different environment and terrains are convinced enough .... I did enquire with them though if any of them uprade their shocks but the answers I got from them is why need the change as the stock shock have prooven it's quality and performance!. ..

btw for the nitrox gas cylinder .. actually in reality the gas truely can be top up but sad to say UM did not do that for us ..... why? .... that's made me kind of wondering why too since I've asked Chris .. but was told he is not aware of that ... I showed him the manual that it suppose to can be done !!! ..... sad though to hear the answer from our bajaj distributor here!! ....

as for my Gazi.. I believed it can't be refill as I can't find any adapter cap for refilling... sigh!

I just bought the bike few days ago. I have already sold my previous bike. I asked the previous owner and he says he is not aware of the sound :faint: But he did say that he is ready to split the expenses but if it costs over 200$ I doubt whether he will agree to bear the charges.

Anyways I tried to ride today in 4th gear but as a habit I just push it to 5th gear and although there is the sound I just ignore it. I hope its just the sound and can live with it but hope it doesn't cause further damage.

btw .. fyi

DTSi on Pulsar

1. The most obvious feature is the Twin Spark Plug configuration o f

the Engine. The cylinder head has 2 spark plugs one on either

side. These also spark simultaneuosly, This has been done to improve

the combustion process by reducing the time of combustion.

The end results are low emissions, good fuel economy and good

driveability

2. To enable the sparking of the 2 spark plugs, a intelligent CDI

capable of handling this was developed. Further more, the

ignition timing has been optimised to give the best output from

0 0 engine (10 BTDC @ 1500 rpm, 28 BTDC @ 3500 rpm). To

enable optimum igntion timing for part throttle loads and full

throttle loads, there are separate igntion maps stored in the

memory of the CDI. These are activated depending on the

throttle opening and engine speed. The Digital CDI has a bit

Microprocessor which handles all these inputs and gives out the

required and correct spark advance. The intelligent CDI can be

easily indentified by 2 green dots marked on CDI case.

3. To enable switching the required igntion maps, a magnetically

operated need switch is incorporated on the carburettor throttle

shaft and carburettor body. This is known as TRICS. Throttle

Responsive Igntion Control System.

4. These engines are capable of of reviving very high, quite easily.

To keep them mechanically safe, a engine rpm limiter has been

incorporated in the Digital CDI. This curtails the sparks to the

spark plugs thereby limiting the engine rpm Max upto 9000 and

thus keeps the engine mechanically safe. There are 2 spark

plugs. LH spark plug fires at 350 rpm and then continues to

give spark till at 9000 rpm of engine. The spark is cut off from

LH plug 9000 rpm to protect engine from excessively high

speed.RH spark plug gives spark at 750 rpm and then continues to

give till 6000 rpm of engine. If engine rpm exceeds 6000 rpm

then RH plug is cut off. This is done to reduce combustion

noise created in engine.

5. This engine has been extensively tuned for more Power and

Torque.

6. The DTSi technology has enabled the Pulsar to meet 2006

norms without any Secondary air injection devices.

Troubleshooting :

• Malfunctioning of the Reed switch assly will not harm the engine, neither it will give any physical

indicators like starting trouble or misfiring.

However checking of proper functioning of Reed Switch Assly at PDI and at every service

is essential.

• Following symptoms may indicate as malfunctioning of Reed Switch Assly as one of the cause.

Symptom:

Sudden drop in mileage & power

lack in mid range rpm

Cause:

The igntion systems is working only in 2nd map due to reed switch is

stuck in open circuit

Remedy

Replacement of Reed Switch Assly

@Fredd, when are you planning on doing the Australia road trip ? Have the dates yet ? Which bike will you rent ? The Five Countries trip I'd like to do is about 3.6k km one way.

@SC Gaban, patience, things will come your way as well, plan and save and God Willing you'll get the chance ! We can start planning Indonesia if you'd like, I was thinking June or July, let me know which dates would work best for you. We can actually ride there if you have enough days maybe ? Or maybe go in August to make use of national holiday ? (But that'll be Ramadan period so maybe not ideal..)
