Hi all,

i'm new to this website and would like to ask some questions, not sure if anyone can help out. I'm currently awaiting my class 2 TP and would like to ride a Softail Custom when i eventually pass. However noted that that the Softail's dry weight is about 300kg (I'm 1.64 & 56kg). Not sure if i would be able to handle the monster. I have previously rode the Steed400 (abt 205kg) and found it still quite easy to ride. But 205 to 300 is a big jump. Anybody share the same experience? :p

Actually there are quite a number of smallish men and women riding softails and other model Harley's. The centre of Gravity is quite low making them surprisingly easy to handle even at low speeds for their size and weight. The trick of course is to never drop it as you will need some help to get it upright again. It is the same story for nearly all of the lager cruisers.

To be honest I find my Softail easier to ride and handle than my wifes Steed. Once you have your class two you should be able to organise a test ride at the dealership. If you hang around the dealership or some of the other Harley repairers long enough you should be able to question some of the riders directly.

Cheers

Hi Hagar,

Yes you are right, one of my greatest fears is when the bike topples. I would be left stranded in a predicament. Although, throughout my riding experience, it has not happen before but i guess slips and small accidents do happen for big bikes....... Btw, do you know of any shops which do repairs and maintence for the Harley other than at the Leng Kee showroom, any in the East? Do you have a pic of your softail? Its my all time favourite bike with the infamous "horse galloping" sound. Many thanks and cheers

Why miss out on living your dream because of something that might happen. Anyway the bike riding community in Singapore is pretty good - if you were ever to go down passing riders will generally stop and help you out. Still best to test ride one first though - you will be surprised that they are not as hard to handle as people think. However it is what it is (Big heavy and powerful) so don't expect it to behave like a sports bike or scrambler because then you will be dissapointed.

As for shops doing repairs etc. Check out the Harley Riders Gather thread. There's a lot you can learn in there. See the below link.

Attached is a photo of my ride - it's only changed a little since the pic was taken.

Cheers.

Hi Hagar,

Thanks for your feedback and encouragement. Wow, that's such a cool ride you've got there. Not sure if i can handle such a big bike. I may consider a Sportster 1200. But if you notice a trend, most of the riders who buy Sportsters would end up selling them for bigger harleys after 2 years or so..... So as i was thinking, if thats the case, i might as well go for the big one at the first place (the rumble is just music to my ears). Another bike i'm looking at is the Dyna Low Rider...... Is this model smaller that the Softail?

low rider is another superb looking bike...

love the low low riding posture.

My sentiments exactly, that's what caught my attention. The low riding posture and the forward stretched legs. But not sure how the Dyna Low Rider compares to the Softail. Got to do more research.....

Having ridden sporster sports ,evo fatboy and latest addition to the family a dyna wide glide...

Kinda agree that the dynas are not very popular due to its smallish size which can be mistaken for a japanese bike. The wide glide is much better looking due to its extended fork,19inch front wheel and fat bob fenders...

This is the one which was ridden by Lorenzo Lamas in Renegade ...if I am not wrong.:thumb: a very good ride due to rubber mounted engine.

Agree!! The Wide Glide has always been one of my favourite Harley models. Very cool looking with forward controls and extended fork. I was very dissapointed when they deleted this model from their offering. I guess it was to focus the attention on the new models such as Rocker and Street Bob.

If you want the 'horse galloping' sound, you got to get a bike before the year 2000.. Evos make that noise, Twin Cams don't.. :) Or maybe, Evos make better noise..

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

yeah!they should have continued this model.it is a different ride from other dynas.I was a bit concerned when riding it especially with the extended fork and forward controls but eventually got used to it! wat can i say ...fantastic riding posture and handles very well.mine is an 03 model which has twin carburettors refitted. It will be a collectors item in the future.

ciao and have a great and safe weekend ahead!

Too true. My ride with the TC88B and EFI - no "horse galloping", not even any "potato potato" because idle speed too high and not easily adjustable with the EFI. Still a heck of a lot of fun to ride though :) :) .

Hi all,

Sorry but what is the difference between the Evos and the twin cams? I had the impression that all Harleys came with the “horse galloping” sound, just a matter of tuning. Was at Changi Village on Wednesday night and saw this black Sportster 1200, very nice bike but surprisingly, not much rumble, very quiet, not what I would have expected of a Harley (did owner put in a silencer?????)

My2sons, that is one of the attributes that I find very suitable or should I say to my “customization”, small built bike but with a big engine…….. hey, mind if you post your Dyna on the site for all to drool…. The Dyna Low Rider is smaller built than the Softail but it’s dry weight is about the same (around the 290kg – 320kg region). Still my all time favourite is still the Softail. Anybody has difficulty doing U turns on these 2 bikes? And is it true that rubber mounted engines, are models after 2003?

And I think the bike that Lorenzo Lamas rode in Renegade is an actual beauty. I think it’s a ’90 / ‘91 model V Twin Softail Custom (have attached a small pic of it). Cheers

Black sporty with saddlebags? I was at Changi V too. If I'm not wrong those were stock pipes. But I have to say, sporties don't look good with saddle bags

Yes, that's the one. With the black saddle bag. Rider riding with a full face helmet cos i remember seeing it :p

You hang out there too? I saw a few chopper riders with loud pipes there but didn't see what models the rides were. What i could remember though, was the logo "Zero Singapore" printed at the back of their leather jackets. Cool :bouncefire:
