Anyone here tried the 2 bikes, alternate day approach? Seems that most of us would do the 2nd bike use as daily transport while the dream bike is the occasional run around once in a while.

My daily commuting is at least 60km, total distance, to and from work. Kinda thinking of using my 2b CBR150 mon, wed and fri whilst my 2a bike will be for tues and thursdays. Yet to see how this would work as I'm only getting my 2A bike next mth...

Current Rides:

FEB 07 -> NOV 08 [CBR 150]

AUG 08 -> AUG 12 [XJR400]

AUG 12 -> ??? [DUCATI MONSTER 696]

yeah u have a point.. and that is one of the many advantageous.. there are also disadvantageous but if u put both of them together on a scale, the advantages seems to outweigh the disadvantages..

In fact...I would use my Cl2 bike more...Cos CL2 cost more per year even you dont ride it....

I clocked about 15k per year even with track and touring...I guess now even less with my little sonic to share the burden...

Situation like jam whereby a Cl2 will cook you every morning when you go to work...Depending on location where I worked.. Cos I have 2 location for work...Usually the small bike whereby there are jams all way from bedok to bishan...

And the big bike for the other location with almost no jam, from bedok to Kim Chuan...With even a stretch of road to

flex its muscle for a while....

well.. normally i would use my fazer about once or twice a week... just to charge up the batteries.. my spark is the daily get around bike for me just because of its cheaper returns..

currently my bigger bike is doing slightly more den 10k per year.. mostly is touring miles....

If you own at least 3 bikes, have a very good record, and have a very good insurance broker, you could ask for a fleet policy instead of individual ones. I know of someone who does that.

hi, wat's a fleet policy? care 2 share more on tis?

but come till the yearly insurance time how ?? the amount u save all went in to the extra road tax and insurance for the spare bike, not forgetting the money used to buy the bike at the start. you must really save up the difference. unless you quite old liao, at least above 31 than owning two bike would be still ok.

See-ing that you want to be riding XJR / PB1 as your 2A bike, I think you could do away with your CBR150 since both those bikes will make excellent commuters.

Wouldn't that be a waste of your two-wheelers? Perhaps you could let go of your phantom and see whether you could maintain riding your super 4...

Juz my 2 cents people, don't mean any harm..

Am also toying with the idea of getting 2 bikes. Can afford the second bike (buying a second hand "play" bike) but the insurance, season parking, road tax put me off. Plus, I wish to use it over the weekends or during holidays. Is the idea of a "weekend" plate too far fetched for bikes? The road tax and insurance premium could be reduced as you don't really use the bike much. But alas, too much paperwork and not much response, so guess LTA won't even look into it.. hehe..

I own two bikes too.. a drz e model and a cbr1000 05 model. The big bike is for me to go far, meaning any distance out of east side and of course to JB for petrol. My drz only for weekends. Petrol I spend abt $100 cause go JB to fill it up , insurance wise it's affordable for me. I'm not that young any more.

Don't tell me U miss me...causeIknowUdo! :eek:

It boils down to purpose la.. for e.g. it's a bit expensive and hard to ride goldwing everyday (respect for the riders man.. dun think I can U-turn with these behemoths).. but it's better for long distance touring.. So, the second bike is more of a hobby bike. Some do track racing, some do motocross (the powerful ones are fuel guzzlers.. not that practical for everyday riding unless u rich ah), some go for touring, whatever the reason, it's like having different tools for different jobs..

how abt a 2nd hand wave for the second bike?

Its cheap, fuel comsumption low, 4-stroke and maintenace is cheap.

The only main concern is that the fuel tank is kinda small and not much power.

I think a 2nd 2B transport bike is fairly affordable to most who are gainfully employed & are passionate riders.

The thing is, do you really want to spend ~$20k on a dream ride & leave it parked 4~5days a week? Where is the enjoyment then?

well... some people do not enjoy squeezing traffic with tourers nor stopping each traffic light with super-sport bikes..

i have 2 bikes. en125 and k1g1. i use my k1 almost everyday. seldom go jb pump. my small bike i ride like once in 2wks for the battery. other than that, the small bike is a spare bike in case my big bike got prob. once i had 2 change tyres and had no money, so i rode small bike till i could buy tyres for big bike. also use the small bike for things like town riding and comex...

I think it makes sense to get a 2nd 2b bike for backup if you're riding a bike for which it's difficult to find spare parts, like a kawa or ducati for example. At least while the big bike is in the workshop you still have something to ride.

Agreed with you...cause these bike ducati and kawasaki parts are rare and when we use it everyday the wear and tear might be high....

my thoughts on dis approach as i had also considered it.

a scooter, perhaps a 2nd hand burgman/majesty/silverwing for the incredible storage n weather protection. for shopping n rainy days. i've ridden a scooter in heavy downpour along ns highway n got hardly wet. wif rain gear on of cos. what i mean is dat on a regular road bike i tend to still get wet somewhere on my body, especially the feet. only complaint is a lack of power.

a class 2 bike (or any bike u'd like to own) for thrills. for dat burst of power, the feeling of acceleration only a class 2 bike provides. 0 to 100 in 3 secs for almost any bike u'd care to name. admittedly dis is likely my fair weather machine.

so... a scooter for errands, rainy weather, short trips.

a sportbike or tourer for everything else.

My ride is NOT perfect. It hates to be in start-stop situations & that is when it is taxing for me to handle it. The clutch is sooooooo stiff that I feel like I'm lifting weights with my wrist only when in such situations.

But at the end of the day, I get so much kick out if riding it that I just can't imagine leaving it parked while I ride a 2nd bike to work to reduce wear & tear or to save on petrol or for convenience. This is all part of riding.....

Of course, this is just me. Different strokes for different folks.
