Not sure if you can take your own motorbike there.

Was reading this forum: http://www.batamforum.com/ Seems you can rent a bike there for RP150000.

But it's beautiful to ride down the Barelang Highway to the end of the riau islands. There is a Kelong at the end where the seafood is cheap.

is he a rich white guy

if u;re asking abt strikingviking....i don't think he's a rich dude la...but he;s got an awesome sense of adventure!

He was held captive by Colombian rebels when he was riding thru South America a few years ago. U can read abt how he was tortured but managed to break free in his book Two Wheels Through Terror. Available through Amazon but try and order through his site.

Newayz, being kidnapped and held captive didn;t kill his wanderlust and he set off for a RTW world trip again. He's completed this leg of his journey and is now back home learning mandarin. He's doing it so he can have deeper interaction when he rides through China.

Awesome writer! Read abt his visit to Israel, Palestine and Borneo, Kalimantan on his site or advrider....bloody smashing!

If i remember correctly i think he eventually rode up to a port in Msia n shipped his bike via ferry to Indonesia

Someday, home will be where my front wheel points.

this strikingviking guy, not sure if he's rich but definitely not poor. He sold off his magnificent property to finance his RTW trip. He is also a judo expert, he competes at the national level. Wonderful if he did put up a good fight before the Colombian rebels subdued him.

Anyway, there is a weekly car ferry service from butterworth to medan. If you want to go lake toba, that's the place to land.

dun think the columbian rebels have to fight him to subdue him ... just point their guns at his head can liao

Hi all,

I was thinking of taking a weekend trip to batam rent a bike and do some riding there. Anyone got any advice?

Any threads already started on batam? did a search but ALOT of non related stuff came out

get an international driving licence from AA here in Singapore. The last time I rode in Bali I got knocked up for any number of "violations" by the local TP. Get insurance coverage as well on your own.

There also no need to ride with helmet (at your own risk). But best to ride with helmet cos if got caught by their TP, you have to give some good coffee money.. haha..

Hi,

So I went to Batam anyway without any preparation. And here is my experience.

There I did not manage to find any bike or car rental shops at all. But I managed to rent a car from one of the hotels to drive around. These cars are owned privately by the car owner, so he took a risk in renting it to me :). But i had to leave my passport at the hotel desk for their assurance. Maybe you can get one of the bikers to lend you their bike. And almost everyone there wears a helmet.

You can take a free shuttle bus from batam central to the city or some of the hotels. Look for the information counter. First shuttle bus leaves at 1110am.

I paid around $60 sing with a half tank of petrol, and luckily the car was automatic. Traffic there is still driveable although jaywalkers tend to TOTALLY ignore you and can walk in the middle of the road!!!

Go Tg balai and riding better, can go their seaside or park at the hill foot then clime up the hill for waterfall..RP40,000 only..Nightime go their disco and try your luck to get a free kampong girl back to hotel.. Been 10yr over there during my young time.
