Yes, u'll need Garmin Que to read malsing maps, but if ur bluetooth receiver are non-Garmin brand, u'll need additional software like GPSProxy to convert GPS data from NMEA0183 (non-Garmin brand receiver) to GARMIN protocol.

Thanks, I will read up the FAQ on malsing website on how to configure and set up my gps receiver.

I'm still bidding on ebay for the Holux 240, its smaller compare to Holux 236, so I

can carry around easily.

Not possible. MK10 map format and malsingmaps format are different. Malsingmaps maps' are meant for Garmin GPSr. Try downloading MK10 maps from here:

http://www2.mapking.com/en/MK10/MK10_Dowload_Eng.htm

I have already downloaded the latest version of MapKing and install on my PDA but I have yet to purchase the GPS receiver. I'm not sure if its so straight forward just to turn on bluetooth and MapKing10 firmware on my PDA and it will automatically syn with the bluetooth GPS receiver.

Have you used Mapking for navigation?? Can you feedback the difference compare to malsing maps.

These fancy mountings are nice but expensive. Although they are purpose specific, they may not be as practical as they may seem to be.

I have a Garmin legend C, and my DIY mounting cost me only $3.90 for the 3M heavy duty velcro, a piece of aluminium, a piece of perspex, and 30 mins of work. The aluminium piece is bolted to the riser, using the existing fittings. I like the 3M velcro, I can securely mount or discount my GPS, faster than you can say G - P - S.

I'll post some pics of my setup when I get home.

Ignored the extreme left item. I heat up a piece of perspex to wrap around the GPS. The 3M velcro is stuck on the back of the perspex.

Side View - GPS with perspex snap-on. I did that because the back of the GPS isn't flat.

Aluminum bar with holes drilled to match riser holes. 3M velcro stuck on aluminim bar.

GPS on, ready to roll. I have also rigged a cigarette lighter, with a ciggie power adapter ($19 from SLS), using the USB cable, the GPS gets power from the bike, so the backlight can be permanently ON.

have you tried going trail with this or blasting down NSH at 200+kmh?

will the GPS still sits nicely in the plastic holder?

I am not able to answer your question fully because my bike can't do 200kph.

The position chosen for my GPS is behind the head cowl, so it's being shielded from direct wind and rain. I have taken this approach to mount my GPS with a purpose in mind, as it (GPS) has be mounted in my car, motorbike and mountainbike. And on all platforms, the method of securing is same, using the 3M duallock velcro. The beauty of velcro over bolts for securing is that under vibration, velcro will naturally tighten the gripping whereas bolts tend to unscrew itself, even with spring washer.

I have been off-road where only accessible by trailies, but no big jumps or drops, GPS still around. I used to have an additional cord to secure the GPS to my handlebar as a safety measure, as the confident of the velcro grew, I am doing without the safety cord now. As long as the two pieces of velcro are sitting squarely on each other, nothing will fly off.

yeah the velcro will stick, but how about the grip between the GPS and the DIY-ed plastic? wouldnt it slide out or even break, at high speed or on bumpy grounds?

the perspex used is only 2mm and it's bend to the contour of the GPS. The sides of the holder curve inward slightly but enough to act as a catch to prevent the GPS from moving outward. Rubberised side on the GPS provides additional grip to prevent upward and downward movements.

The GPS cost me $450 last year, I would definitely do enough to protect my investment.

I have tried it up to about 265 and it's fine. The 3M stuff is great. I would recommend that you secure the GPS with a strong string to a part of the handle bar(just in case).

Hey Demon,

great FR u wrote! very detail and informative. I guess fellow riders who rides tourers and reading this topic will have 2nd thoughts abt buying the org Garmin Motoryvcle mountings. And who knows, ppl might be interested to order form you....and in no time, u will be running yr little business online!!

for sportsbike and sports-tourer like my BB, we would nd a longer piece of attachment at the handle bar so we dun have to glance DOWN at the GPS at a steep angle.....wld be too tiring and dangerous.....yr idea will sure work......me just nd to find a place high enough and will not obstruct the view to the cockpit.

thanks for sharing the great idea!!

any1 else got other ideas to share???.....

I did c others using cable-ties to secure it to their handlebar but i dun think its flexible enough......willn't 1 2 leave it unattended.....

yo demon....

what is perspex? another name for acrylic or some kind of acrylic?

I'd like to do the same and mount my gps too.

Can share how did u get the curve and what did u use to heat the perspex?

Thanks!

yep, it's acrylic sheet. The same type they used to make showcases.

You can use a heat-gun to heat up the area that you need to bend. I use the GPS body to shape the acrylic strip. Do wrap a cloth over the GPS for protection.

:cheeky: very impressive mods. Looks good also.

I wonder hair dryer can be used instead of heat gun. Or how about those portable torch that runs on cigarette lighter butane gas - just keep a further distance from the acrylic.

Hi, Im interested to know how you rigged the power to the usb using the adapter. I found that the GPS consume alot of power when using at night, and i often end up with the last part of the journey with my rechargable battery flat.

Can teach how to connect up? It will be v useful and save on batt.

oh ya, how about in sudden downpour? will the charger be shorted when connected since the gps is exposed?

I just realised something.

I bought my heatgun for around $75 many years back.

Hair-dryer won't do, not hot enough

If no heat gun, oven (not microwave) also can. Just that oven will soften the entire piece, like chewing gum. Easier to work with heat gun as it applies heat at a specific area.

I bought the car ciggie lighter from JB, like RM10, but you can find them here too. Run a pair of wire directly from the battery, put a fuse on the "+ve" wire close to the battery end. That's it.
