Is there any problem for moving off at 2nd gear instead of 1st gear.

I ever tried that and is ok so far (for non up-slope road). Any comment. Thanks

quite puzzled.. y would you want to move off at 2nd gear?

Any gear can move off wat..

As long as you know how to control your clutch and throttle such that the engine wont die.

But not wise to try moving off in 6th gear on public road. A lot of middle fingers will pop out of car windows..

If TS intends to always move of at 2nd gear, im also interested to know why.

For me, if i drive larger capacity vehicles like vans, I also prefer to move off in 2nd gear cos its not as jerky as using 1st gear. Maybe because of the greater engine braking effect when clutch in to shift from 1st to 2nd gear.

But for s4 moving off in 1st gear is better, IMO. Especially when got pillion.

I ever drove pick-up before, usually it moved off using 2nd gear. So i tried on my bike and is ok as well. Good news is that the bike just can smoothly travelling at a desirable km/h before the next shift of gear. But, was wondering whether would it cause clutch plate, engine etc problem, for bike like S4 moving off at 2nd gear. Moving off at 3 gear seemed to like "whopping sound" of engine. It also required to have some control over the clutch which might shorten the lifespan of clutch etc. I ve reverted back to first gear and enjoy the bliss of engine soundsss before shifting to subsequent gears. Comment pls.

Thanks

for delivery vehicles.. vans, trucks, lorries, buses.. the 1st gear is geared very short. It is for full load and up a slope of 18-20 deg. With such short ratio, you won't be able to go fast but you can get to the theoretical top speed of the 1st gear (usually around 20km/h) very quickly and suffer what we call (out of revs). With short ratio, engine braking is also much greater.

So for these goods vehicles, 2nd gear is geared for normal driving (less than full load and on flat or downslopes).

For passenger vehicles (bikes and cars alike), 1st gear is also geared more for fully laden (passengers plus luggage) and up a 18-20 deg slope. However, the laden and unladen weight difference is NOT that big so the 1st and 2nd gears are closer in terms of gear ratio.

Moving off with too high a gear (2nd gear on upslopes, 3rd gear on flats) can sometimes lead to engine knocking. This is due to too a high a load that the engine has to overcome.

2nd gear is possible. as long as you dont lugg it..

engine lugging is known to be more damaging than high revving of your bike..

it causes stress and might lead to damages in the long run..

as long as you knw yer clutch control vs rpm, it's pretty much safe to say that its okay.

For every 7 pounds you lose, you gain one horsepower.

Neutral gear also can...provided it's a downslope.

Moving off at higher gear deliberatly can stress the gear tooth and eventually cause the gear tooth to break. Ontop of it, Clutch plate life span shorten and high fuel consumption as well. IMHO.
