Maybe this thread is a more appropriate place to post my question.

Okay here's what I wanted to ask all you Aprilia RS 125 '06 riders:

Does accelerating from STANDSTILL (with 1st gear engaged, no pillion, flat road) at 3k-4k rpm supposed to feel rough, choppy and "weak"?

Does it have a tendency for the engine to die (while accelerating from standstill) if you are not ultra precise with the clutch?

I just bought my Aprilia 2 days ago and it feels less smooth than even the driving center's training bikes. The worrying thing is that the mechanics at the place where I bought my bike insists that this is a normal thing for the RS 125 - basically "need to run-in" and all that crap.

Would really appreciate an informed reply. Thanks

Welcome to th Aprilia world. What you mentioned is a common function of an Aprilia. A bike that is truely designed for track, the designers dont care about how a beginner going to feel about how hard to get accustomed to this "jerky" "loss of power" type of feeling. Anyway, this bike is built for movement at 7,000rpm and above. But not much worries. You should be used to it in a week or so.

Your adjustment of the clutch could be out also. Why not you call me at 90214262 after office hrs and we meet-up and let me have a look at your bike. I am a ex-owner of RS125.

Wait till I achieve my objective.... I will be back with a more powerful engine and a more sexy bike......

Okay here's what I wanted to ask all you Aprilia RS 125 riders:

Does accelerating from STANDSTILL (with 1st gear engaged, no pillion, flat road) at 3k-4k rpm supposed to feel rough, choppy and "weak"?

Does it have a tendency for the engine to die if you are not ultra precise with the clutch?

(1) For sure, I think you've gotten used to the road bike that the training centre uses. Do remember that this is a 125cc sportbike and because of that, it is meant to be ridden with a lil bit of...shall I say, "gusto"?

Technically speaking, sportbikes and roadbikes have different charateristics -- one characteristic that I could list here would be the shape of the pistons, both are different. Hence, that might qualify the Aprilia as one of the bikes that you should ride in a different way than most bikes are.

I can elaborate to you why this is so but it's gonna be lengthy so I'll keep it brief.

===

(2) It shouldn't "die" if

  • the engine's warmed up properly (approx 32 to 34°C on the digital meter)
  • the clutch clearance is setup properly - have an experienced rider test ride your bike to find out
  • your bike's carburetor (slang: carb) settings are tuned correctly
(whoops, sorry for iterating this, no.license! I had to have a list of things for him to consider :) )

Hope you'll get the most out of your RS125 in time to come :thumb:

Maybe u nt used to the bike bah . get one experienced rs125 rider to test ur ride is the best choice in my opinion... when u get a new bike, u will think this spoil that spoil if u feel the least bit uncomfortable ... this is worse for a brand new bike ...

Brand new stock RS125? Are you a big sized person?

You can't give it a few revs, slip out the clutch quick and expect it to pull off smoothly. Even the driving centre little 125 4-strokers have more low end torque, the RS125 has almost no low-end but makes up for it in that sweet high end (on a stock bike make that upper-midrange). Try bringing the revs up to 5-6k and slipping the clutch out more gradually, and with trial and error you'll find your sweet spot.

Those who risk nothing, do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothing.

Thanks for clearing those issues up. I appreciate the informative replies.

Yes it's more-or-less a brand new stock RS 125 '06 (see the first post above). No mods to the exhaust or anything (at least non that I know of). I'm not particularly big sized too - ~70kg

I'm still trying to find that perfect balance of sufficient torque and minimal revs for moving off as smoothly and quietly as possible. Basically I want to avoid the "in-elegance" of revving high and sounding like I'm about to blast off on a challenge (when in fact I'm not).

Btw, how do you (low torque, 2-stroke sport bike) people deal with launching off from a steep slope, and worse, with a pillion? I've practiced like this a few times and I found that it's almost impossible (for me at least) to move off up the slope with less than 7k revs. And once you hit approximately 7k-ish, the powervalve kicks in and the revs explode to about 9k or 10k in a split second in 1st gear.

I've done it without the powervalve kicking in. Even when I'm on a slope as well.

Practice makes perfect. You can do it

Dear Barfy,

I have a '06RS that I bought brand new as well. I have no problems with my bike and if you would like me to take a look at it and tell you what may be wrong, just drop me a text or a line sometime.

P.S. I may know how to deal with your bike problems as I have been giving advice on the '06 for almost a year now. =p No guarantees tho. =p
