Hi bro scoobydoo, thanks for the reply...yeah im am taking into consideration on commuting in sg roads and also for touring purposes...also taken into consideration for power and consumption...what do you recommend?...space or storage not an issue...just wanna see the reliable of each engine..as i know both are two cylinders...im confuse to choose which one...haha

frankly... i have to say my personal preference will be skewed towards the SW... cos it's so comfortable

but seriously, if you want to be able to zZzip around in heavy traffic, or be among the first few bikes to sprint ahead when the traffic light turns green, or drop gear and overtake that road hogger in front before its driver realise what happened, etc., the SW is not the right candidate. the SW is probably the longest of scooters around (think wheelbase also longest), heaviest scooter in 2A cat, and its power-to-weight ratio is definitely inferior to that of 400X.

the SW is designed as a big maxi-scoot that's reliable, driven by a smooth parallel twin engine coupled with a very simple CVT drive. this ride has stayed that way for the past 10+ years so its definitely old-tech to many. but if one looks at it the same way as i do, that's the beauty of a proven formula... reliable and easy to maintain (some SWingers do their own maintenance) :p

while anodise57 finds the SW bad for his back, some of us don't feel that way. every rider's physique is different and so a bike that is comfortable to one may not be so to another. a good example is the T-Max... while i find it backbreaking (need to bend forward when seated cos i have shorter hands), some of our kakis found it ok and have ridden it to faraway lands.

basically, if a rider has a slouching habit, that bad posture can follow him to any ride, whether it's a scooter, road bike, or atv, although some bikes are more "conducive" for their riders to slouch, e.g. choppers.

my advise is, you have to try sitting on both bikes to get your own feel of which is more comfortable to your personal liking.

Yeah bro i sit on 400X already...its high...and havent tried on SW...but as a present scoot rider i still have my preference to SW...thats the bike i wanna own since years ago...but there is also alot of new models around...that makes me confused...haha...but power wise on long run or top speed which is better???....whats the top speed of a SW?

RIDE for Charity Family and for Life

top speed my FJS ever clocked (when still new) along NSHW (ran a clear straight stretch for testing purposes only) was 165 km/h on speedometer, speed according to GPS was 158 km/h. dunno whether my 2006 SW can still clock that speed now

our cruising speed up/down the NSHW is usually planned at around 130 km/h, slightly higher than the 110 km/h speed limit to avoid getting caught between the "big pieces of metals", also to avoid falling asleep. for a well maintained SW, 7k rpm is still very smooth with little vibrations.

personal experience of cruising the SW at 100-110 km/h over long distance along NSHW... fighting zZZz monsters cos bike was so "inactive".

Speedo ... to ... RPM ... to ... GPS

90km/h .... ~ 5000rpm ..... ~ 84km/h

100km/h ... ~ 5500rpm ... ~ 94km/h

110km/h ... ~ 6000rpm ... ~ 103km/h

120km/h ... ~ 6500rpm ... ~ 114km/h

130km/h ... ~ 7000rpm ... ~ 123km/h

140km/h ... ~ 7500rpm ... ~ 134km/h

150km/h ... ~ 8000rpm ... ~ 144km/h

160km/h ... ~ RED!rpm ... ~ 153km/h

Touring on Honda Silver Wing?

(based on our collective experiences)

* SW's Typical Fuel Consumption (FC)?

Other than the comfort, the FJS400 SW's silky smooth parallel twin engine delivers 23~25km/l in the city and +/-21km/l on the highways (average speed of 130+km/h on NSHW). With a 16l fuel tank, I can run 250km comfortably on the NSHW before needing to look for refuel; it has a reserve of 4l.

Needless to say, FC differs from bike to bike and bikers even when on the same route; contributing factors are bike setup/maintenance, bike age, biker's wrist power, etc. Some SWingers we know experienced FC of around 20~21km/l even on local rides.

It's always good to know your own bike's FC and tank ranges, they are important for planning.

* Comfortable Speed for SW?

Just like the reply, the SW is capable of cruising comfortably at around 130~140km/h on the NSHW, no issue. But safe speed would depend on the conditions at time of touring, such as visibility, road conditions, traffic density, etc.

The SW is rated with max torque around 6.5k rpm and max power around 7.5+k rpm. It is able to cruise comfortably around 130~140km/h with some spare for overtaking... my preferred SOA is around 130km/h, very comfortable :)

Do note that legal speed limit at most sections of the NSHW is 110km/h. Run above that? Standby to pay kopi-lui when kenna stopped lor... many of us have paid our dues

Considering the small 14" front and 13" rear wheels of the SW, cruising at speeds >140km/h is not recommended (IMO). Although the SW is capable of running >160km/h, you'll experience quite a fair bit of vibrations, further impairing safety. Another important consideration is, the stopping distance of SW is longer than road/sports or touring bikes, even with the Combined Braking System (CBS). This is mostly due to momentum from the >¼ tonne (loaded) running mass and a less than desirable braking power (single brake disc at front). Squeeze the braking level too hard, you'll risk locking the wheels and skidding, most SW in Singapore does not have ABS. The SW is rear heavy and some SWingers have experiences fishtailing, or 神龙摆尾 :pity:

do check out the SW Tech Corner... there're lots of info to help you decide if you wanna try your luck with the old-tech SW :p

Good points made....

Height plays a part.... I am 1.8... so on SW tends to slouch..

right now on burgy650... I sit upright.. its the design of the vehicle vs riders attributes.

Gotta sit and feel. ......

...but there is also alot of new models around...that makes me confused...haha...

yes, there're many class 2A & 2 scooter options in the market but if you narrow down the list by eliminating those that falls outside your desired criteria, you'll be surprised the options may not be as many.

some suggested filters for scooters:

* class 2 or class 2A?

if you're considering SW, i suppose you're upgrading from a class 2B single cylinder scooter.

if have class 2 license, can include higher powered scoots like BMW, T-Max, Burgman Exec, MP3(500), etc.

gold wing? can-am spyder? if budget is really streeeeeeetchable

* brand new or pre-owned, budget?

brand new of course gotta dig deeper into pocket, and future income lor.

generally, Jap scooters are relatively costlier but more reliable... generally

* japanese make only, or will consider non-japanese? e.g. italian, korean, taiwanese, etc.

if only want Jap, then options down to basically Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki.

* parallel twin or single cyliner?

if want parallel twin in class 2A, then choice is done...

correct me if i'm wrong, my memory says SW is the only class 2A scooter with a parallel twin engine.

* touring or no touring?

if touring, must consider reliability and whether the scooter can take long stretches of high rpm cruising.

breakdowns during tours are very costly affairs unlike breakdowns in Singapore. transporting a bike back to SG could cost from hundreds to more than a thousand dollars, depending on how far you are. but if the scooter can be repaired in malaysia or thailand, it'll be much cheaper.

e.g. bikebulance charge $300 plus $1/km travelled; tobroz charge $300 for JB, $400 up to Sepang, $450 up to KL, etc.

fyi, maxi-scoots (including SW) are rare in malaysia and most motortiams don't have spares, apart from whether the mech know how to fix the defect. we usually make sure bike is in "touring condition" and bring some critical spares when going far north (e.g. belt, coil).

* min storage capacity?

scooters basically have large underseat storage, some have more, some less.

boxes are usually added for extra storage during tours, unless you wanna strap your waterproof bag to the pillion seat.

Slouching is just a matter of habit, one can be riding scrambler and still slouch. Mentally reminding urself to still sit straight and u can preserve ur back problem, like me:cool:. Bike selection then will be less of a headache.

Hi Guys. Anyone know how to open the cover for the trunk light?

I would liketo change the bulb to LED bulb which is much brighter.

Btw I am riding SW-T400.

THANKS!

sorry bro, saw that you asked twice but me riding the FJS... think SWT one is slightly different.

for FJS, we just need to dig in with our nails and pull, the clear plastic lens will come off.

SWT & FJS speculatively should share the same trunk light. Google image for SWT trunk light pn 34265-sfe-003. Chairman method will work. A small flat tip screw driver also helps.

hi lunzai, welcome to the SW community ... hope you'll enjoy your new ride as much as we do, and safely of course

see this post * Top Boxes

the most common, economical and value for money box would be the 45L Givi E450. i last bought that from ah boy at $110 (comes with LED brake lights and plastic base), cash and take without installation (better to go your regular mech). want slightly bigger without paying too much more, can consider the coocase 48L boxes. want even more and willing to fork out >$300, can consider the 52L Givi Maxia (55L costs a lot more). want more branded and not scared kenna stolen? go for H&B :p

Thanks bro...final question does the new Sw-t400 required drilling to install the top box base plate?

Hi! Just gotten my ABS SW yesterday after waiting for 4months. Fitted a givi maxia 55l box. Hope to join u guys for kopi one of these days. Shop refuse to fit my IU in glove box in case kenna fined by LTA (says they got warning before).

Any recommendation on which workshop can do it and roughly how much? Thanks!

Thanks bro...final question does the new Sw-t400 required drilling to install the top box base plate?

yes ... default design/setup is for baseplate to be mounted onto the "tail fin" directly, drilling holes is required.

someone tried looking for a rack but there's none available here.

but seriously, mounting directly to the fin is very secure and practical, cos a good rack probably costs as much (or more) than replacing a new tail fin. btw, the holes can be patched up using compound (or plug with rubber stopper) if you eventually decide not to have a top box.

cheers

hi 70boleh, welcome to the SW community ... hope you'll enjoy your brand new SWT and feel the 4 months of waiting is worth it

our kopi sessions at Rail Mall Coffee Bean (aka CB Clubhouse) on Thursdays, 7+ to 9+pm. no fixed time cos some will be there as early as 6pm for massage and makan :p

i find the claim that LTA would issue a fine for "wrongly mounted" IU weird, cos the IU isn't a compulsory item. some big/reputable motortiams sell new bikes without IUs, and it's not even in the vehicle inspection checklist. according to BP, we don't even need to buy/mount IU if not using the bike pass any ERP gantry at all, ERP parking can insert cash card like those malaysian cars/bikes. i've seen riders who don't carry/mount their IU around, using connection plugs for to connect their removable IUs to the bike as and when required. imo, the mech smoke you cos mounting it inside the glove compartment needs more effort and time. but most of us install IU for the convenience and daily needs, ERP here there everywhere :p

another thing with IU ... you may wanna consider is Motopay-DBS (http://www.motorpay.com.sg), especially if you need to pay ERP gantries everyday like me and don't mind paying a smallish fee of $1.07/month. with that, no need to worry about forgetting to put cash card inside IU, simply ride (or drive) through any ERP gantry and the charges will be automatically charged to the designated credit card. very convenient.

if only fairing, then it's not that bad cos fairing can easily replace, need some $$ and time... usually takes about 3 months to ship in (unless heng heng the parts dealer got stock), or pay more to fly the tupperware in :p

headlight unit cannot repair, no choice gotta replace the whole thing, costs near 400 bucks. head cowl also near 400 bucks.

very important is to determine whether chassis (aka big bone 大骨) suffered any damage from impact... hopefully not affected.

like SW9000 suggested, can go ah choong there and see how he can help you.

may the force be with you
