New Lobang for repairing/alter race suit

For years, I have been enduring the monopoly of the shop in Bukit Timah for anything i need to do to my suits (change zip, alter sleeve length, blah blah blah)

So naturally, I was very happy when I read a posting about a shoe shop in Bylands Building. After lugging my suit all the way there in the midday sun, i was to be disappointed. I wanted to expand the leg cuffs, but they said they can only patch here, patch there. Can't do anything else as no equipment.

LL, I grit my teeth in anticipation of a hole in my pocket and went back to Bukit Timah.

Recently, through some riding circle, I got to know a guy who works with leather (pouches, belts, whatever you name it) I asked him if he works with racing suits, he say never thought of it. So I gave him a spare suit to try, change the main zip and add leather to broaden the chest. He did a splendid job!!! In fact can say better, no loose threads here and there like XXXX. And additional leather to be added was trimmed very nicely, till cannot see it's been altered.

During this time, he also studied the suit, and concluded he will be able to do most alterations, change zips, add lettering or designs to any suit. I've roughly gave him a idea of the kind of pricing I experienced previously at XXX. So he promised to keep the price more affordable than XXX, but of course good work comes at a price.

So why not give him a call and a free quotation? His name is Barb: 90277868

Thanks for the lobang. You may want to inform him that for race suits, he needs to use aramid threads and double-stitch them internally. Since he is new in the race suit industry, he may not know.

Also, I don't advise anyone to buy a suit too small or too big, and have it altered. No matter how good the stitching is, a single piece of leather from the factory is always stronger.

But I am very interested in the customization aspect. Maybe I can get a leather patch with my name sewn onto the race hump. :thumb:

Of course, the ideal situation is to use aramid threads, marmite threads, or granite threads, whichever your fetish. Ok, I get the gist.

I'm not professing him to be a racing suit guru. But when the ONLY shop in Singapore so far isn't using aramid threads anyway, what's the diff ??? :slapforehead:

My point is, he is an alternative to that shop, not the whole racing suit industry worldwide. If you are willing to ship your ship overseas to be altered, so that aramid threads would be used, why not?

Frankly, I can't be bothered. I wouldn't ship my suit bothways round the globe just so my fat ankles can go into a new cuff altered with aramid threads.

Lastly, I used his service, was pleased with it, and so am sharing it. Thus far, I've received a few PMs. Right now, I am scratching my head because I believe I have also provided his contact number. Why PM me why you guys can call him? :sian:

Er, I am just trying to be objective. Many people cannot afford new suits and thus look for used suits. After reading this thread, they will be tempted to buy suits that are cheap, but a couple sizes off, with the hope that they can be altered to fit. Of course, they can be altered. But if aramid threads are not used, when you crash on the track, the seams will rip apart and your skin will be sliding on the ground. What is the point of wearing a race suit in the first place then?

It is also not hard for him to obtain aramid threads, since he is already in the leather industry. I am just making a constructive suggestion that will benefit both the business (he can advertise that he uses aramid thread) and the customers (better protection).

I am in no way saying that your lobang is no good. In fact, I am very happy that there is a competitor to the infamous Bt. Timah shop.

Finally, I am also not willing to ship my suit worldwide to have it altered. I will sell it and shop for a more fitting one. :thumb:

Aramid threads or not, altering a suit a couple of sizes off in order to fit is not economical.

I'm talking about specific alterations like cuffs. Most off the rack suits will fit but never 100%.

Like for me, I'm on the plump side. So a 50 would be damn tight for me, yet a 52 would fit nicely, but the sleeves would be too long. So I alter the sleeves shorter.

In such a case, where the work is done on the edge of the sleeves where it is covered by the long gloves, I really don't care what thread is used.

Agreed.

You might want to see this page especially the video on that page regarding fitting a leather suit. It is supposed to be "damn tight". Otherwise the leather will "ridge" when you slide and wear through (a hole) instead of scuffing. (I am amazed when I first saw that video of how that guy put on the suit.)

Went to check out this shop to fix up my gloves today. Very honest businessman! My glove was torn in an awkward manner with a very small hole, as there was no clearance to sew it up, he patched it up with leather glue and a big piece of leather. I would say a job well done.

And knowing that there was not much work done, he didn't charge me anything for it. Very nice guy. I still paid him alittle though. Being a rider himself, there's alot of common lingo we shared. Check out a fellow rider in trade man.

His shop is at Jalan Kledek, off Victoria st.

would like to ask those who are using Leather Suits.

1) what products do you recommend to maintain the leather.?

is it a softner or cleaner? or 2-in-1?

2) lets say you sweat hell lot in your suit and it stinks. how do you guys clean it? bring it to the laundry to dry clean it possible? or is there other alternatives?

thanks!
