First Look: Yamaha Super Tenere

What does Yamaha have planned?

By: Tracy Hagen

Yamaha lifted the corporate kimono a wee bit at the Tokyo Motor Show with a display aimed to tease our imagination on the new Super Ténéré.

Yamaha has sold a large displacement, single-cylinder Ténéré off-road bikes going back to the XT500 launched in 1976. And now Yamaha has designs in taking on KTM and BMW in large displacement twin-cylinder off-road bikes with the Super Ténéré.

Though still in development, Yamaha's design brief for the Super Ténéré includes shaft drive, traction control, and unified anti-lock brakes.

Questions about when the Super Ténéré goes on sale were met with polite smiles by Yamaha representatives.

Yamaha has shocked the Tokyo Motor Show crowds by unveiling a concept version of the new Super Tenere which is due for release next year.

Weirdly, the concept bike is made of cloth, though it does give a tantalising glimpse of what the Japanese firm will be bringing to production next year.

Highlights include a 1200cc parallel twin engine with shaft drive, traction control, ABS with three modes, linked brakes, side mounted radiators and a 270 degree crank (like the TDM).

MCN has already found trademark applications filed by Yamaha lodging the Super Tenere name for use. It’s not thought this bike will be shown before the middle or late 2010 to go on sale later that year.

All of the Japanese firms are anxious to get a slice of the adventure bike market so gripped by the sales success of the BMW R1200GS. It looks like Yamaha will be the first to get a bike to production.

Some idea on how tough it is to travel across deserts...

I have been on a real desert. The sand is not like what you feel at East Coast or any beach. The sand is fine and soft like flour. Your feet just sink into them. It is very hard to walk. On a steep inclined sand dune, imagine walking up a hill of flour. Takes minutes just to climb up 10 meters and got to do it on fours. That's why men use camels,...and the arabs love toyota turbo charged 4.6 litre 4x4 land cruisers that can cross sand dunes...and that's why the Daka Rally is impressive :)

Thanks for the youtube videos, saw them...but I wonder if Yamaha will really sell the bedouin-dressed edition, or they may just sell with the more usual plastics.

Either version it's gonna cost more that a GS with the yen so high!

I will not hold my breath. Chances are it will be grossly overweight, has cast wheels, skinny forks, and plenty of fragile plastics.

i.e. another Varadero/Vstrom type of bike. Good for road touring, bad for dirt.

Cynical? Yeah... they have managed to push a thumper past the 200kg mark.... So there.

Past: KDX200, LC4 400, LC4 620, GSXR750WR

Present: CBR900RRY, Gas Gas EC250, XR250L, XR250RV, XR400 (motard-ed), NX650 Dominator
