Would like your advice, as I'm trying to figure out what might have happened.

The other night as it JUST started to drizzle (of course this is when road are most slippery), I accelerated, then lorry in front of me brakes hard. I hit my brakes (not a complete e-brake) but with good force.

All of a sudden, my rear fishtails to the right a good 15 degrees. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but I THINK rear tired got locked, countersteer and pump rear brake then it fishtails 15 degrees to the left! Luckily the lorry accelerated again and i was able to keep it upright, so I was in the clear. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Any possible suggestions?

I'm a new 600 R6 rider, so not sure if it was a lock but that i just not used to it? Strange thing is it didn't feel like a locked tire at all...or maybe too much power for me to handle?

Nah, cant be too much power, happened to me on my phantom, wasnt raining but the floor was slick from previous rain, braked hard and rear wheel slid out from behind bike was travelling forward in a diagonal direction, i didnt even realise it in the first 2 or 3 seconds when it happened, was a really surreal experience :giddy: :giddy:

Don't need rain to slide/skid on your rear tyres.... My rear slid on wet cement that came out of a stoopid cement truck. slight braking was all it needed.... skid on the damn cement n gravel..... Worst thing was it dirtied my bike!

usually just tap a bit can skid off .

happens to me a few times .

Ride carefully then !

Thanks everyone for your advice. Having read ur posts and replaying the situation in my head, i do think it was the just the slight tap and engine braking that caused the skid.

Also, not 100% if it was 15 degrees, but it sure felt like it!

Tires are fairly new (1 month old) Metzeler.

Weird thing was that just a couple days ago, the SAME thing happened to me in the SAME exact area!! 2nd time was not as bad though.

I guess in the future it might help to not only pump rear brake but also apply more front brake pressure?

one of the reason might be condition of road. oil patches left behind? if u ride ur bike juz when it juz started to rain, tat could be superb slippery as well

happened to me twice on my sp...at traffic light first time scared sh!tless and rode slowly home.

2nd time same place again raining also fishtail again...funny is i relak 2nd time, can test somemore, tap rear brake fishtail, tap again fishtail again funny shiat.

i would think its the road condition + brakes + tyres.

Reading on this post makes me wanna say something?

Am i correct to say that riding carefully = riding slowly?

Yesterday was raining and i was riding very slowly cos the road was very slippery, while approaching a bend, a taxi suddenly overtake me (that cab was already tailgating me for a while le)

I got so mad that i show him my middle finger and ask him to f**k off.

y those LJ cabbies/other inconsiderate road users never think one?

Fishtail can happen anywhere. As long as u apply the rear brakes hard enuf within tt split second.

Scenarios that i can think of:

1) E-braking

2) Riding on wet metallic temporary road covers

3) Riding thru big puddle of water FAST

4) On oily grounds.

5) Rear wheel punctured.

Most cases that i experienced, managed to get out of the fishtail safely.

Except for the time where i had a punctured rear wheel... Was riding abt 40kmh for 10KM on PIE til the next exit, where i rode to a bikeshop to get my tyres fixed.

As for the oily ground, totally slipped my bike on the ground. No chance at all

jus dnt use ur rear brakes lah cause it'll lock ur rear wheel easily & skid ur bike.

i feel it is wrong technique to just rely on front brakes... you shd use both with approx 70% front and 30% rear...... if your front tyre skids, you will not end up with "fish tailing" only!!

Yeah, in theory. But realistically, how do you apply 30% rear 70% front?

I simply use the front brakes only, on the roads and on the track. Using both brakes is suppossedly the way to go, but I can never seem to stop my rear from locking under hard braking. o_O

I wonder if installing ABS braking system will prevent this from happening?

dun thk so....will make the bike more easily to skid when u brake hard coz is ABS on 2wheels....n when bike skid...try nt to counter the force as in juz let it go smooth towards whr the bike is gg if nt mayb will coz a flip with ur counter force....juz my $0.02.
