I wanna let go of my super4 and try a motard. Basically my dilemma is between a XR400 w/ motard set vs standard drz400.

As of now, I have a spark dat is fully paid which I am planning to be my main mode of transportation so the motard will be my wkend playtoy, maybe occasionally go jalan2 w/ it, which is why I didn't choose a ktm4 instead. I can definitely afford a XR4 from the sale of my s4, but will have to save up for a few months to get a Z...

The diff between a XR4 and Z on average is close to 4K-5K (from my observation). XR4 has bulletproof engine, very low maintenance, low insurance (coe bike mah) while Z has e-start, is lighter and legal as a motard.

So what's ur opinion?

u get a newer bike and lesser problems as parts on the bike are relatively new. if u do ur regular maintenance the drz is a problem free bike.

On the price difference, it's not an apple to apple comparison since they are of different age. Although the XR4 could be cheaper, the youngest bike here is at least 10 years old, and since it has stopped production, parts will slowly become difficult to source. The upside is that the XR4 is a proven bike for it's reliability and easy maintenance. It was very popular in US, and Honda sold them in great numbers so there are alot of used spares available on ebay.

The DRZ-SM is a purpose built bike with all the current technology such as liquid cooled engine, and inverted fork, and the oldest bike in the market would be less than 6 years old. This bike is specially suited for the not so tall riders. The upside with the DRZ is that you will never be short of parts locally, and they are alot of performance mods available.

If you are riding a S4, you will adapt to the DRZ-SM better than the XR4-Mortard Modded.

Maybe you may get lucky, there a few XR4-SM here. These are Honda factory XR4 with SM setup, and they come with electric start.

I also waiting to change to DRZ... but waiting for price to drop... hehe.

DRZ - You get a crap load of accessories to choose from, super motard as stock config for road riding, Can fix safari tank and go JB pump petrol till you faint, electric start, and best of all... its still quite new compared to XR4 where every mother's son and mother's daughter already whack the XR4 to pieces already. Very hard to find a good condition XR4

XR4 - Kick start and air cooled.... drop the bike won't have to worry about tankee bochor. Off road tires set up for off road madness!! That's about it....

But do take note wor guys. Both bikes vibration are quite heavy.

DRZ can also use for track use :)

I tried touring with my drz to melaka. Reach pagoh only my whole butt and hands are numb

Perhaps down sprocket teeth so that engine doesn't work so hard at high speeds?

That's the signature mark of a thumper.

There are ways to reduce the vibrations but there is absolutely no way to make it ride like a S4 on the road.

TS,

I've also have the same dilemma as you until a mth ago, when i bought my zee,

At first i was also contemplating between the zee and the xr4.

XR4 is known for its reliability and bulletproof engine, but on the downside, its a very very old bike and it has changed many owners over the years and you don't know what each owner has done to the bike. And if you really see over the garage sales, there are very little or close to non well maintained XR4. Therefore, unless you have the moolah to spend to rebuilt the bike, i suggest you keep away from that bike.

As for the DRZ, like what Demon said, the oldest is yes, a K5 (which is what i currently own, a 2005 model). Which is pretty neat i must say, the parts and accessories are almost equivalent to that of a S4, the bike is really agile and yes, it has the magical button that the XR4 doesn't have, the E-Start.

Well, there are quite a no. of DRZ-SM's for sale recently, they range from k5 to even the earliest k9.

So take your pick. And choose carefully. :)

Just my $00.2.

Hi all.. thanks for posting and sharing ur knowledge abt this.

After thinking hard.. despite many ppl choosing DRZ instead, I at the moment am leaning towards xr4 right now.

My decision for this.. this is juz my weekend bike. Kinda' feel wasted having a z sitting in the carpark la. Coz I rather hav the spark take the everyday wear n tear den tose bikes. Mind u spark tyres cost 180RM in JB while z or xr4s will cost in the 300+sgd? and both will take u to ur destination one way or another

Also i really wanna try trailing.. confirm will drop the bike alot . I drop a xr4 which is bulletproof is ok, but if I drop a drz, my can feel the heartpain sia...

Another reason is, altho i been riding 4 sum time, i nv been trailing b4. So I am a total newb.. dun tink I can fully use a drz's potential anyway.

Only biggest downside to xr dat I see.. is kickstart and ignition. I heard from my older bro if u dun get the technique right, can kick2 until morning bike wun start :cheeky: also i am a forgetful person, i so can see myself riding off w/ the disc brake locked! :faint:

Haaaaaizzzz...

if you had explored.. you will know that DRZ had way many more accessories than S4.. It's never ending for DRZ, from cosmetic to engine internals..!! :cheeky:

Since you just want to play trails on weekend.... why dont you consider small trail bikes? DR200 is one such contender.... its still in production and parts are readily available.... and don't look down on it.... its reasonably fast and agile. And it has electric start is air cooled... also bulletproof. http://www.bikez.com/pictures/suzuki/2007/24341_0_1_2_dr%20200%20se_Image%20credits%20-%20Suzuki.jpg

Smaller bike easier to handle off road... my 2 cent.

TS should get an XR4.

Too many damn DRZs around already, just like the S4s. :faint:

lol..... last thing i expected uncle raptor to say.... but true also.

i rode both bikes but offroad models currently riding a DRZ-E.

i would say that, if have budget constrains get a XR4,its durability and reliability is not a myth, i fall 100 times in trails the bike still starts fine, dont worry about kick starting that bike its easy..people who cant start it must be wanking 5 times a day..=D you dont have to worry about coolent radiator(when you fall)/batt flat and itchy backside to mod the bike end up u spending more money to it, get a thumper carb a good exhaust and u are good to go.

DRZ's is built to win over the xr4 in terms of technology , the suspension, the carb, the e start and the radiator.its heavier though with all these on the bike.Yes u can put a kick starter to a DRZ too =D

it all depends i would say got money buy a zee, feel restricted get a xr4

:gun:"lovin it"

XR400:cheeky:

Thanks for e info bro.. Anyway, if I can find a drz-e, I will def get it over xr4/drz. It's within my budget and its best of both worlds!

alot ppl thought that drz are fast..maybe for pick up yes..but afterall its still a scram..it is not gonna very fast or smooth so ultimately depends on what you are looking for..

aftermarket parts, yes alot..but it will still be a scrambler at the end of the day.
