hi guys...open water diver here..

basically you have to feel confident in the water..dont have to be a strong swimmer whatsoever...

the cost will range from $300 all the way to $800, depending on where you take your course.

i paid $380 for my course in 1997, with my open water in local waters (pulau hantu..yucks!)

issit a one time cert that u get, u can dive anywhere in future? does the price include swim gears, etc?

its a cert that last u a lifetime. so, its not that ex compare to the lifetime of wonders u gonna experience.

price usually does no include dive gears, got to ask the agency conducting it. u can rent if u dun intend to buy. for starters, u just need mask, snorkel, boots & fins. others like wet suit, weight belt, bcd, octopus can be rented. a simple set of equipment can be between $200 to $400 (depending on what exactly u want, the brand, etc).

however, open water is only the basic. certain dive locations require more than open water, ie. u need advance at least. in addition, to experience night dives, most operators require you to have advance as well.

unless you are below 15 years of age when you get the license..the cert is for life.

my bro took it when he was 13..& had to go & convert. no test needed..just go there & convert..thats all.

the gear you rent from the dive shop is usually not included in the course fee..

the gear i have is my wetsuit, snorkel, boots, fins, weight belt, mask...

the rest of the equipment not worth it to get unless you have lots of money to burn or you dive for a living...

one of the most interesting must be wreck diving..

too bad i dont have the money to go higher up the diving ladder..

i also have problems with my upper respriatory tract..dont have the confidence to dive any more...

with regards to the equipment, as long as u dive regularly, even for like 10+ times each year (or roughly 2 trips a year), i think its worth it. however, opinions may differ, no worries.

i have:

wetsuit, gloves, mask & snorkel, boots & fins, weight belt & weights, dive computer, primary & secondary torch

would like to get (but no $ :weep: ):

underwater camera housing, bcd, regulator

there r also plenty of stuff nice to have/good to have, such as sausage, knife, underwater writing pad, etc... its a bit like bike accessories. the more u buy, the more there is to buy :cheeky:

Scuba and traveling really don't mix does it? I was up traveling to

Perhentian last week and I make a choice to travel by train. Train is a

night mare you will say,ya with 13 hrs before you arrive at Perhentian

Island.

But to my surprise it is better than traveling by coach the usually way

where any dive center will do. Let me tell?you why. You can sleep all the

way to perhentian ,walk around if you want and if you like a maggie soup in

the middle of the night. By the way we?left on Friday Night .Train have a

canteen that operate through the night for the hungry ones. We arrive fresh

and ready?to dive the next day (Saturday). We make 3 dive on the first day

and another 3 the next day (Sunday) a total of 5 day dive and 1 night dives.

We left the Island after our 6th dive and hit straight to the train station.

Check in to our nice little bed where we reflex back on what we see at

Perhentian the last two days. We are back in Singapore on the 3rd day

Monday) around 1030am ready to go for work. This is definitely for those

that have a hard time of getting your leave.

Actually, don't have to buy packages from Singapore. They are generally more expensive. Get contacts from Malaysia. Simply go into google and type the dive locations you are interested in. Then liaise with the dive operators there directly, definitely much cheaper, I kid you not.

Anyway, seems like courses are getting cheaper these days. $380 for advance, $350 if more than 4 people going. Who's on?

went to Aur last weekend. The visibility wasn't half as good as I'd expected. Didn't see anything interesting at all apart from one pathetic little turtle.

Pretty disappointed.
