just get rid of the MIO modem...get something else..it work better. MIO modem has some limitations...worst if you got MIO tv running as well..

if u got MIO tv then bo pian u must use the MIO modem...

problem is cause by ur wep encryption....dun use encryption...set to mac address instead.

Hi there.

WEP encryption is there for a good reason. It keeps your data that's flowing wirelessly over the air between your PC and your router secure, so that kaypoh hackers in between can't pick up the signals and do something bad about it, like steal data/passwords. So do keep it switched on.

Change a WEP key just to try it out, or try other encryption methods, such as WPA, to try to troubleshoot the issue.

It's hasty generalisation to say that routers have screwed up WEP technologies, but if it's really true that 2Wire routers are like that, worse come to worse, the person needs to buy a new wireless router.

Bro, thats the address for the 'Singtel' setup page. I'm playing with the 2wire advanced configuration page.

http://gateway.2wire.net/mdc

Oooh, being techy here eh? :thumb:

Before I even found out there was such a page, I was kinda swearing and cursing because all the basic configuration pages were too limiting and didn't offer granular control.

P.S.: I've tried to turn off the "disallow unsolicited traffic" and opened up ports (as described in Microsoft's KB927847) and my MSN messenger seems to be working for a week now.

APCN2 cable cut cripples connections

A cut in the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) undersea submarine cable crippled connection speeds for users in the Asia-Pacific region on Wednesday, particularly in Singapore and the Philippines.

Users were sending updates to local forums and Twitter, complaining of slow connection speeds to sites hosted outside of the region.

According to a notice sent by Malaysian telco, TM Net, the cable fault was traced to segment 7 of the APCN2, which stretches between Shantou, China and Tanshui, Taiwan. TM Net traced the outage to Typhoon Morakot, which hit the region over the weekend.

Additionally, segment 1 of the APCN2 is also currently under repair. Repairs on segment 7 are expected to commence after work on segment 1 is completed.

TM Net said the repairs are expected to be completed by late evening Aug. 13.

Singapore operator, SingTel, confirmed the cable fault in an e-mail to ZDNet Asia, saying the APCN2's consortium members have started restoration works and are diverting Internet traffic to other cable systems. It said the situation is expected to return to "acceptable levels" within the next 24 hours.

A status update posted on InternetTrafficReport.com showed SingTel's Singapore gateway registered a score of only 34 points, compared to the global average "health" of network connections, which was 86 points as at 3pm Singapore time on Wednesday.

The site first started registering slower response times and packet loss in Singapore at 8pm Tuesday evening.

Cable & Wireless sent ZDNet Asia a status update at 6pm, Singapore time, noting multiple cable breaks have been also detected along the EAC (East Asia Crossing) and SMW 3 (South-East-Asia, Middle-East, Western-Europe) subsea cable networks, in addition to the APCN2.

These breaks have been concentrated specifically near Taiwan, with network traffic "adversely affected in and out of the region as a result," said the operator.

Back in 2006, the APCN2 was taken out by a powerful earthquake in Taiwan. Internet access was reportedly badly disrupted and halted in some parts of Asia after the quake.

For us internet users, it's just a minor slowdown in speed, but for companies that depend on it for large amounts of data transfer for work, any slowdowns like these are quite impacting to their business.

Unless they have backup, that is.

How are things going so far for you? And how 'bout you SBF peeps? :)

it really affected us (Trading sector) for Global markets...

lucky that the ball is not in my hands... so.. just answer phone calls from angry users :p

http://www.pcworld.com/article/170065/asian_undersea_cable_disruption_slows_internet_access.html

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), which is an investor in APCN2, said its users may experience slower Internet access than normal to some U.S. Web sites, blaming the APCN2 fault on damage caused by Typhoon Morakot.

"The [APCN2] consortium members have started restoration works, and our engineers are in the process of diverting Internet traffic to other cable systems. We expect the situation to return to acceptable levels within the next 24 hours," SingTel spokesman Chia Boon Chong, said in an e-mail statement.

A spokesman for Starhub, another Singapore ISP that holds a stake in the cable, did not return a phone call seeking comment.

The fault that hit APCN2 on Wednesday follows two other service disruptions that recently hit the network. One disruption affected APCN2 Segment 7, between Hong Kong and Taiwan, and the other affected APCN2 Segment 1, which connects Singapore and Malaysia. However, both of these disruptions were deemed to be "relatively minor" compared to the disruption that took place Wednesday morning, the source said.

The cause of the two earlier faults on APCN2 was not immediately clear.

APCN2 isn't the only Asian undersea cable currently suffering from a service disruption.

"The Cable & Wireless Real Time Operations Team have logged multiple cable breaks on APCN2, APCN, EAC and SMW3 in Asia Pacific -- specifically, near Taiwan. Network traffic flow has been adversely affected in and out of the region as a result," said Gavin Tait, director of Asia network planning and implementation at Cable & Wireless, in an e-mail statement provided by the company.

None of Cable & Wireless' customers were affected by these failures, he said.

Efforts are currently underway to repair the East Asia Crossing (EAC) undersea cable after it experienced "double faults" off the coast of Taiwan last weekend, according to Roland Lim, a spokesman for Pacnet, which owns EAC.

The first sign of damage to the EAC cable off the coast of Taiwan came on Aug. 9 at 1:37 a.m., local time, when an alarm signalled that service on EAC Segment D, which links Taiwan and Hong Kong, had been disrupted, Pacnet said in an Aug. 10 Network Event Notification that was obtained by IDG News Service. At the time, traffic on Segment D was transferred to EAC Segment C. However, Segment C suffered a second disruption roughly twelve hours later.

The cause of the faults that hit the EAC cable between Hong Kong and Taiwan is not yet known, but the damage happened at about the same time the southern part of the island and China's southern coast was being pummeled by one of the most powerful typhoons to strike in recent memory. There were no earthquakes recorded by Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau at the time when the disruptions took place.

No more 'draft' designation for Wireless-N; IEEE ratifies 802.11n Wi-Fi standard after 7 years

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4858/resource.jpg

The IEEE standards group today officially ratified 802.11n, the most recent standard for Wi-Fi.

The move lets companies develop Wireless-N hardware knowing that it will work properly with any device that supports the technology. Officials plan to publish the final standard in mid-October.

The extended delay in approving the standard, which was first developed in 2002, stemmed primarily from Atheros and Broadcom, two competing companies that didn't want to co-operate with every other wireless companies that was following the "Wireless-N" standard, and wanted to make their own high-speed wireless solutions.

While this was eventually settled, the competition led to the IEEE agreeing to certify so-called Draft 2.0 802.11n devices in March 2007 with the promise that these would eventually be upgradable to the final standard. The group went so far as to promise no major changes in 802.11n or its certification process.

The "Wireless-N" standard is already found in most modern computers and a small number of handheld device. Products on the market were labeled as "Wireless-N 'draft' " back then simply because everybody had to gradually make sure that their wireless WiFi devices were the same as each other in that they should operate with one another, irregardless of brand or equipment.

A "Wireless-N" device connects at about 300Mbps, which is about six times the peak speed of the more ubiquitous Wireless-G 802.11g format. Some of this speed comes from Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) antenna arrays that piece together an incoming signal as it's bounced around an environment, improving not only the maximum speed but also the usable range.

Mine was the same. It was my router, my phone line that was causing the issue. But now I've been a loyal customer for 4 years now.

I bought a wireless G adaptor and then realise that my signal strength is at best "Low", may I ask is there any way I can improve the signal strength without buying another adaptor of the "N" technology?

When you have a wireless network at home, there are a few things to consider.

As a guide, wireless signals work at their maximum efficiency when they have line of sight...i.e. when your eyes can see the router. When your wireless router is behind a concrete wall, or when your wireless equipment are located on different floors, the signal may fall, or even cause disconnections.

EDIT: There's nothing wrong with operating wireless networks with walls in between them. But depending on the construction of the room, a very complex structure may cause wireless signal to suffer.

Another would be distance.

Some people buy a Wireless-G MIMO router.

An addon to your wireless network, these networking equipment works with your wireless router, and is advertised to "boost the signal strength" and to provide "better coverage" to your mobile devices .

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/2500/belkinmimo.jpg

It's an optional purchase by the way.

The third point you may wanna consider is the presence of other wireless or electromagnetic producing equipment. Cordless phones are a good example. These equipment operate with a radio frequency of 2.4GHz. Wireless-G also operates on the 2.4GHz radio frequency spectrum.

While your router can have the ability to alternate the radio frequency to avoid interference, sometimes they may clash, and that's where you will experience the symptoms that you've described. Another one would be microwave ovens.

Best is to relocate interfering equipment if possible. Hope this helps.

Thanks Redbeacon, due to the position of my telephone point, it is very difficult for me to have "in line of sight" with the wireless modem, and i am not using cordless phones anymore in the house.

I guess that leave me with the only option to buy a wireless MIMO router to try :sian:

Anyone wants to buy a cheap secondhand G wireless receiver?

Selling half price at $25

Linksys brand

What's the typical wireless connection bandwidth that you get? Are there frequent disconnects? Depending on your scenario, there might not be a need to change gear.

For my use case, one of the PCs sometimes "degenerates" to 11 Mbps rated bandwidth over the air. But considering that I'm on an 8 Mbps rated plan and hardly do any PC-PC file transfer, even the "slow" speed is more than enough.

Yippee, I found a way to boost my wireless signal strength with my wireless G adaptor.

I just connect a extension USB cable to my desk top USB outlet and then connect my wireless G receiver onto the other end of the extension, then place the wireless G receiver at a higher place, my signal strength goes from "Low" to "Good" and sometime very good even.:cheeky::cheeky::cheeky:

Have you guys tried buying a LAN cable and extending your router to the middle of the house?

Or use DD-WRT to boost your router signal strength? Its a custom linux based router firmware that unleashes the potential of your router. Free some more.

My house got 2 PCs, 6 Laptops and 4 Wifi-enabled phones. When i bought my Linksys WRT160N, many complained that although it was fast, the signal was unstable. I got so pissed, went to install DD-WRT and suddenly the signal strength and the throughput was solid and nearly full bars.

I've never looked back since. Give it a try if you have the guts. Flashing your router with this firmware is so easy.

Please ah guys. Don't waste money. If only last resort, then can waste money. :D

Peace!
